Ok, it's not official, but if I've learned to read my washington fud well enough by now, there are people in the higher levels of the government wanting to push ahead with the space program, which means building a totally new space shuttle. Not sure if they're going to build it with newer parts or from spare parts from the other shuttles like they did with the Endevor. Considering that they're short on parts, I think that they should go with as many new parts as they possibly can. One thing is for certain. Like I said before, if I'm reading my washington fud correctly, it WILL be built. Not IF, but WHEN.
If a new space shuttle is built, what should we call it? The current list of names already assigned vehicles, both present, past, active and lost are as follows:
Atlantis - Active
Challenger - Lost
Columbia - Lost
Discovery - Active
Endeavour - Active
Enterprise - Landing Test model only, status is Retired.
Pathfinder - Test model only, status is Retired.
Main Propulsion Test Article (MPTA-098) - Engine test model only, damaged during testing. (plus it doesn't really count.)
If I had my vote, I'd say to recommission the name Enterprise on a new shuttle. Since the other vehicle is retired, I believe that the name is now free and it is only fair to use such an honorable name for such an honorable ship with such a lofty purpose.
If the American people were given an opportunity to have a say in the naming of this new shuttle, what would you suggest we name it? Voyager? Enterprise? Constitution? Freedom? Stargazer? Victory? Something else? What do you think it should be named?
