Carlin & Cosby are definitely 1 & 2.
After that, I'm just thrilled that no one said "Larry the Cable Guy."

top 5
Bill Hicks
George Carlin
Louis CK
David Cross
Zach Galifinakis

Bottom 5
Jeff Dunham
Jeff Dunham
Dane Cook
Larry the Cable Guy
oh did I mention Jeff Dunham?

Lenny Bruce

Can't believe it took that long to get Lenny in here. Honestly he's not my favorite standup in terms of comedy, but how he grew stand up and pressed boundaries in that era is just too important. Without Lenny we wouldn't be where we are.

Personally Jim Gaffigan, Louis CK, and Dennis Leary come to mind.

1. George Carlin
2. Richard Pryor
3. Mitch Hedberg
4. Eddie Murphy
#5 is a multiple way tie. between
Stephen Lynch, Gabriel Iglesias, Jeff Dunham, The Amazing Jonathan, Ralphie May

In other words my top 4 is fairly clear but my next half dozen is not.

Louis CK
Patton Oswalt
Zach Galafanakis
Jim Jeffries
Doug Benson
Mitch Hedberg
Nick Swardson
Nick Kroll
Paul F Tompkins
Brian Posehn
Adam Carolla (he counts)
Took someone long enough to name Jim Jeffries. Guy is hilarious. Only other current ones I like are Louis CK and Jim Gaffigan

I thought of Lenny but I didn't include him because I never really laughed at/with him personally. Of course, historically, he was beyond important. But he just predated me and anyway, his comedy wasn't for kids.

I did include Cosby because I did laugh at his stuff personally . . . but not like most here at his TV series era shtick, but at his early comedy albums, which I bought and owned as a kid, in the 60's.

A 33 and 1/3 rpm comedy vinyl LP. Imagine that! :awe:

If anyone says Daniel Tosh they're getting stabbed in the neck. I've never seen such a pretentious unfunny douchebag in my entire life.

I'm watching Mitch Hedberg... I don't get it. Is it that he intentionally sucks at delivery that is supposed to be funny? I'm not afraid to say he is the worst standup I have ever seen. I'm not exaggerating.

Not enough props and/or magic tricks for you?

Wow... fucking go watch Dane Cook and Daniel Tosh and shut the fuck up.

Cosby right off the bat.
Carlin.
And some of those folks who were on Showtimes Full Frontal Comedy back in the mid 90's. For those of you who never saw that show, I pity you.

1. Richard Pryor
2. Rodney Dangerfield

there are plenty of other guys I like but none that deserve to be on the same list

I can't stand Mitch Hedberg though, almost as bad as dane cook

In no particular order:
Louis CK
old Lewis Black (his new stuff was very preachy when we saw him live)
Jim Gaffigan
Mitch Hedberg
John Heffron was very good live
Kathleen Madigan was superb live
Daniel Tosh

There was an Indian guy too but I can't remember his name right now

Bummer - he's hilarious 😀
