Take all of the fans out of there. It'll be really quiet, and then watch that clock throttling kick in and your sis whine about why it's sooo slow. :)

The cd/rw and floppy are about the right price. But then, it's none of my business. It sounds like it's a deal between your sister, your dad, and her boyfriend. If they are happy with this, then anything you say can and will be used against you. Let it go.

Yes, but with a $1000 to spend, you can surely build a better system than that; at the very least, more cost effective.

Santaclaus, show your parents this thread.

Come on guys, cut this guy some slack. At least he didn't go out and spend the $1,000 on some POS system bundle from CompUSA, or an eMac from the Apple Store. Even though this guy made some lousy part choices, he's still smarter than 90% of computer buyers out there.

He couldve at least gotten tech support with the emacs or emachine systems. and theyre probably put together better

From what you wrote it's your sisters and your dad's business. Their business is their business and your dad's money is just that, your dad's money. I'm not saying your sisters BF made the right choices. All i'm saying is that they are both old enough to make their own decisions. Live and let live.

That is the title on the copper heatspreader on it. It is probably not the best stuff, but whatever.

Have you mentioned it to your parents...shown them this thread? You haven't said anything about that yet...

Also - that config for around ~500 dollars was good...though I'd question why he'd get a 2600+....save 50 bucks and get the 1700+ and that'll easily handle winamp along with a few IE windows, typing, and whatever college stuf she does without breaking a sweat.

Same thing on the G4ti4200- doesn't seem necessary to get that - just get a R7500 or 8500LE and it'll do just fine...

Yea... I showed my mom, and I guess my sister overheard, and she was pissed to say the least. Only a couple more weeks, and she will be going, I guess.

Her bf is going to build the junk computer in about a week which is when he gets back from vacation, and they still haven't gotten:

vid card
monitor
keyboard/mouse

I will stay out of it now as I was told. All I can say is I sure hope the computer works fine.

EDIT: I suggested a good budget vid card, but she just ignored me. I guess my advice sux.

To finalize this thread, here is another way that her "bright" bf is a loser.

One day before setting up my dual Raptors, I showed him the red SATA cable. He said I was an idiot; he called that a USB cable.

A week later I told him that I was running 4 hard drives, which is absolutely true (RAID 0 Raptors, WD se 100 GB, Maxtor 40 GB). He tells me it is impossible to have 4 ide hard drives.

What a i love you. Can you believe he says that I don't know what I'm talking about, while I'm talking all this computer gibberish behind his back?

I say give him the "USB" cable and let him try to hook up a printer for your sister.

Oh, how about an OS?? Or is your sister's boyfriend going to set her up with a pirated copy?

One good thing that will come out of this - when the computer flakes out and dies, she won't complain to you.

Just curious, is this guy just dumb, or is he a unrightfully overly self confident asshole like he sounds to be, trying to make himself better by trying his best to make u look dumb. And with the way he set up the computer, he won't save money on a pirated, he'll buy retail full price Windows XP Pro for $299, and forget to activate it lol.

lol but really this would be completly different if he was unknowledgable but willing to learn, instead of insisting he knows better for everything.

Also, yeah that 1700+ could be substituted for the 2600+ and overclocked, but I assumed with a guy that stupid involved with the computer in anyway it'll be underclocked if anything lol. I was also setting up a comparable system without any overclocks myself, and i cant find good deals on anymore DLTC3 tbreds that what i use and it's gotta be the best overclocker I've ever had, although nothin amazing compared to some people i get 2.25GHz (180x12.5 with 1.6volts) out of the box, no mods, thermaltake slk800a heatsink, decent performance cpu for 50 bucks though :)

Anyways he's a moron hopefully they will break up, ur sisters PC will die on her soon after, and when she comes crawling back to you, you can say what? I dun think u wanted any computer help... i thought u had that all covered with the no it all dumbass!

Show your Father. in the end he is one paying (I'll assume) and if he can seriously save a lot of money he won't care who makes it.

And it does sound like your sister is supporting him soley because she is his BF. Funny part is as I type this the newegg add for a 120gig HDD for 108$ is on my screen ;)

And when I meant get a 1700+ I mean NO overclocking...I don't see why a 1700+ couldn't handle the tasks she is going to use it for...and I guess a year down the road when she wants something better toss a 3000+/3200+ or whatever

EDIT:

I envy that RAID 0 Setup you have ;)
