I get the same kind of crap at work from the older people there. They seem to think that their added lifetime of experience makes any suggestion I say irrelavent. GOD I HATE THAT!:| I don't dismiss their social conversation as uncool, or call them over the hill and joke about them dying tomorrow. Good advice is good advice; no matter where it comes from.

You guys think that's bad? About a year ago my moms work was in the market for a new computer. I said I'd build one or configure a good one from dell, but nooo, my mom's boss decided to trust her husbands friend who supposedly knows what the current market is like.

1 year ago he bought a computer with this configuration for $1500:

1.4ghz p4
Some crap ECS motherboard
128 SDRAM
40 GB HD
nvidia TNT2
cdr/w drive
48x CD drive
Some 17" monitor
keyb/mouse, standard
And to top it all off the worst sounding speakers I've ever heard.

Are you going to show this thread to your father or what? You can't let an idiot like that waste your money so easily.

yeah man...forget showing this thread to your sister's BF...show it to your dad. not that we're professionals here, but anyone who frequents these forums not only has an affinity toward components, but also keeps up to date on technology just by reading threads here in the forums, unlike the wizard who built your sis' PC.

Sigh, anyone who says AMD is unreliable or unstable, because they never had bluemen commercials or something, is an idiot.

Epox 8RDA+ (nForce2 with soundstorm) - $83
AMD Athlon XP 2600 - $97
DVD Drive - $20
CD-RW on Sale - $10
512MB Crucial PC2700 - $65
Much nicer and cheaper case - $50
GeForce 4 ti 4200 - $81
Seagate 120GB 8 MB cache drive $99
Floppy Drive $8
Showing this to that dumbass - Priceless
Total at $513, will outperform that system and has a vid card too.

One more question, with 1000 bucks why not get a laptop? it'd save her space big time...

thats bad but not as bad as my bosses about to spend $5000 on 2 P3 systems. Lucky for them though that a Friand and I were able to talk them out of it and buy 4 barebone systems with an AMD Duron 1.3 systems. and still saved them money.

To santaclaus'es father:

Your son knows what he's doing.
Recall the money from the slacker boyfriend.
Even if you have to eat 10% in restocking fees, the $513 system specified a few posts above will utterly destroy it and still have change leftover.
And oh yes - get a shotgun, a shovel, and a big backyard. College guys are nothing but walking hormone storms.

no wonder amd has such a small market share with all these uninformed people.

Hmm if u cant convince him maybe the heatsink would accidentally fall off... unless P4's have some kind of deal where they stop power at x ammount of temp, I dun know, I know they do in the bios at least, u could always shove a soldering iron on it for a while.

The thing is, they have been going out for about 2 years now. I don't want my dad to all of a sudden just hate him, but I just wanted to show how stupid of configuration it is for $671, while that $513 configuration will blow it away. I tried to convince her boyfriend to something along those lines before, but he just doesn't like AMDS (or he doesn't know anything about them).

The main reason that my sister didn't want me to do this is because she claims that the systems I build crash a lot (of course, that only happens when she uses them). Everybody's computer has problems sometimes, right? But I worked all those problems out; I have a rock solid system now.

Besides, I think they want me to kind of stay out of this (I've bugged them about it a lot, and they don't want to hear it).

What's done is done, although he wasted a lot of dough (but it's not my money or my comp, so I will get over it).

200 dollars for a cpu alone? for a girl that probably won't game? thats total stupidity.

what a moron.

what she needs is reliability yes, but not at that cost. reliability and quiet are the two most important things for her, that and dummy proofing. a cheap raid 1 setup so she doesn't lose her papers when one harddrive kicks it would have been better investment then a 200 dollar cpu. this is gross negligence.

so do not cheap out on power supply or case. get a nice looking/decent one. there are some nice lian li's out there, or coolermasters. heck i think theres a pink one;) get ultra quite coolers/fans and fan controllers etc. its about quality of experience more then the latest video card for 3d gaming. a case is an investment, a cpu is not. a 99 dollar ecs combo at frys will rape your current setup in two years. buy cpu for now, not later unelss your a heavy gamer etc.

she shouldn't have to know its on, and well semi dummy proof with data redundancy. and make a ghost image in case she hoses windows:p keep os partition limited to a few gigs.

and nice interface devices. a logitech mx700 mouse and decent keyboard would do good. its all about ergonomics. get her a ratzpad gs or everglide optical, because mice just slide better using those. heck, its better to order more everglides at a time to save on shipping per board, use it as an exscuse to get yourself one too. these things matter!

so, there are still some things you can buy that her b/f hasn't gotten yet. you could probably convince your dad to force returns of most of the b/f's purchases really.. since your DADS money.

in summery

good case - her friends will notice a nice case, they probably won't know what a ghz is, let alone what .4 ghz more will do for em etc. nice case is aluminum, and light, easy to carry. nice case lasts through upgrades.

quiet components- pc's ment to be used, not heard. being pretty is a good bonus.

quality interface devices -mx 700/500 and keyboard and nice mousepad(preferably the everglide optical)- and buy two is better then one :) everglide.com its all about ergonomics!! carpal tunnel be damned!

quiet storage - barracudas, potentially redundant storage via raid 1 since most people slack on backing up documents etc.

familys for life.. dont cheap out:)

Stick a few delta fans in the computer, to replace whatever he has in there, and she'll get mad at him :)
