So my older sister has this boyfriend that I personally don't like, and she is going to college, so she needs a computer. My dad gave her boyfriend $1000 to build a system. He claims he knows a whole lot about computers. I'm sure you will find that very evident. Here is what he got:

AOPEN AX4B PRO -533 w/ onboard audio/LAN (Intel 845e) $103.75
P4 2.53 $191.64
DVD ROM $53
CD RW $32
1x 512 mb Komusa overclocked PC 3500 $88.95
WD 80 GB SE $118.12
Floppy Drive $8.79
ENlight Case $75 (after shipping)
$671 TOTAL

And she wants, of course, an LCD monitor, not to mention they haven't even gotten a video card.

I told him to go AMD, nForce 2, but no, he says "AMDs are less reliable."

I told my parents to let me build her a good budget comp ($1000 is not that bad). I could have gone way beyond what he did. I bet that RAM won't even POST. And you're thinking, "How did he get that high of prices on everything?"

The only item he bought @ Newegg was the case, which was a huge rip-off.

Definitely an idiot. Could build a much better system for that budget. Not that I know much about budgeting. Spent $1,800 on mine for college, all said and done. (with speakers, accessories, etc.) See my rig. :)

I don't see a big deal. It doesn't sound like your sister is going to notice a difference anyways.

FOr a girl you can build an Awesome Shuttle XPC system with the works and a monitor.

What an asshat. You can pick up that case on ebay for like 25 bucks + 20 shipping..

Tell your father to recall the money.

Do you think he's going to believe me? I'm the only computer person in my family, but they don't listen to me

But he spent the $1000 in a very destructive, unwise manner.

Or just got her a Dell for a lot less, and kept the rest. Would have come with tech support, at least...which is more than can be said about the machine he built, when they break up in another month.

I don't see how exactly your father can disagree. Just show him this thread and a quote on prices on parts and then the total. What can he say to straight facts?

I concur...in fact i think going with the 845e was the biggest mistake in his purchases. this leaves no headroom for future upgrades the way technology is advancing these days.

i almost feel bad for him though...everyone is calling him an idiot. i think i'll just say that he is an uninformed fellow...not quite an idiot, but maybe a little ignorant to what's going on in today's PC industry.

also, for the same price, you can get the P4 2.4C, which aside from the same performance due to the increase in default fsb, can be OCed more further than a 2.53B ever can (since it seems he plans on OCing the system).

Atleast total noobs who are full of cash come in saying "I'm thinking of a nforce2 and a P4c - how about you guys?" - he gets a i845??? AMD is less reliable - talk about a total fanboy. Sounds like he was into PCs back when the KT266 hit the streets or something like that. I have a AMD rig right now and I'm the "Bang for the buck" type of person and while that 2.4C is REALLY nice I still think AMD holds that crown....

Um...show your father this thread and try to get it all returned - even if restocking fees are going to hit you.... I t

And yeah...for 1000 dollars I would definitely go AMD especially if she wants an LCD moniter

And where the hell did he buy this crap from! :disgust: You can get the 120 gig WD for the same price on newegg!

He claims he knows a whole lot about computers

But please show your father this thread - I don't mean to be that mean to your sister's BF but it annoys me to see people talk as if they know a lot about computers when in fact they are really iffy about knowledge...when I didn't know much about computers (and I learned all I know from ATForums ;) ) I didn't go and act as if I was some uber leet person who could build pcs (hell my frist pc I got an AT mobo and a ATX case ;) ) I still don't show off and if a person wants advice i will help them...but I always tell them to get a second opinion if they are unsure about anything

Techmole, Spartan Technology, and some other crappy stores. He used Price Watch.

I swear to God, the whole time he was on my parent's comp ordering the parts, I was saying stuff like "Whoa, don't get that" or "You could get that hard drive at Newegg for like $80" and "why the hell are you getting that RAM?" The guy's stubborn, not taking advice from his girlfriend's little brother. He may have a few years ahead of me, but he knows nothing about today's PCs compared to me.
