8500 miles... near 100 degree heat.... no power issues....
you expect issues from a car that has 8500 miles on it?

he's refering to the fact it looks like the turbo would suffer from heat soak or not enough air flow. It's a top mounted intercooler w/ a fairly small opening IMO. But mazda is pushing forward and putting it in the mazdaspeed3 and CX-7 as well...

Some people have reported that problem, just to throw out there. Not quite sure why they couldn't have done a front mount and had it fairly hidden.

TMIC. Supposedly the hood is "ducted" so air can move under it from the grill to the IC.

Good luck in summer then...

My Impreza's TMIC will soak like fudge if I'm in traffic, but anyone who talks of 'sudden' powerloss and thinks it is heatsoak is talking out of their ass. Heatsoak will reduce performace, but not drop it like a stone.

Overboost, now that's more like it. I've had that on the Impreza and it's like hitting a brick wall. When the turbo produces too much boost (preset according to the ECU map) , the ECU will get rid of all boost through the wastegate and cut the fuel, and it is brutal. This has occasionally happened under full beans on a very cold night to me.

If the intercooler is hot enough that its not doing its job, its likely to cause severe knocking, resulting in the ECU pulling back timing. And yes, this does cause power to drop like a stone.

As for the OP, have you driven any other examples of the car? Unless you've driven one thats working the way it should, you might never be able to tell if your current car has issues. I've seen this countless times, where someone thinks their car is fine and it is in fact horribly wrong, but they are used to it.

I've had my Speed6 for about 2 months now and I've only experienced powerloss when I first got the car. They filled it with 87. Ever since I've gotten the reflash and 91 octane gas, it's been running strong ever since. And now that I have the mazdaspeed CAI, I can hear the turbo sucking in air and the BOV. :D

TMICs are just generally a bad idea, be it on a Subaru or a Mazda.

Sorry for the slow response time...

Before I bought the car I test drove other speed6's at 3 different dealerships... so I do know how it's supposed to feel. I've always filled it with 93 from the time I drove it off the lot.
