i see what you are saying about making squares, and stacking them on top of eachother. i'm just not sure how to attach them to eachother so that they are sturdy. because i thought those L brackets i connected between the corners of the base i made for the center channel could give a lot more support than they did.

my wood working skills are 0. the people at home depot cut the wood for me.

the previous owner told me he used door stops for his and i saw the pics and it looked nice. you probably won't be able to see them since the speakers are black and the stand will be black, and the door stops will be black as well.

How about nailing a 1x2 or a 2x2 to the bottom front edge of the box? Would angle it up .75 or 1.5 inches. Then you could cover with the fabric.

yeah i will try some stuff out before i finish it. i've decided that i'm going to use duratex as the finish. im going to order a gallon tonight or tomorrow.

anubs i have been talking to andrew since yesterday and he gave me some insight on how to build a box with plywood so i got a sheet yesterday of 8x4 at home depot. they wouldn't cut it up into the squares i needed, but they would cut it up partially. i used some applicatoin he recommended to figure out the sizes i needed (boxnotes) then another one that showed you how to cut a 4x8 to get the pieces you need (cutlist i think).

so they wouldn't cut the precision pieces at home depot, but they cut it into the lengths that i then had to cut into 3-4 pieces by hand today. was a pain in the ass.

going to build one of the stands tonight, possibly both. i'll update with some pics when i do.

been sanding the stands and used my buddies router tonight. duratex comes tomorrow so i can start painting. hope to have them done by the weekend.

first time using a router i think i did okay. i left like 3 areas with extra nicks in the wood that i am not going to bother patching up because im tired of sanding lol. i will just put that side facing the wall.

I don't remember seeing this, but is there a picture in your mind of how you want the final product (the room) to look? Would be neat to see which way you are going with this.

it's pretty much finished other than the speaker stands and my surrounds, as far as the ht stuff. well and that i need to get my ipad to use as the controller heh.

eventually we wanna put a bar to the left of the screen and a pool table back behind the seats. i also wanna make some accoustical panels to hang on the walls as well. there is a thread over on avs about people making ones that look like movie posters. i plan to go that route when i get to that.

it was just a bucket of spackle type stuff that comes in a bucket to close the gaps and some of the unevenness.

i should have borrowed my friends circular saw lol but i didn't realize he had stuff like that.

i just put on the first coat of duratex on 1/2 of the stands at 8pm. going to flip them over at midnight and do the rest. this stuff is a very strange texture. even with a smooth 1/4" nap roller for the first coat it definitely has texture to it. i also notice that you can see the roller lines so i'm hoping when i do the 2nd (final) coat with the texture roller that it will smooth out a bit. i will work with it to try and smooth it out a bit too.

if you are getting lines use less pressure, or a larger roller (full size) also did you watch the vid? that should help a bit with getting it smooth. you can lightly sand it between coats as well

ah snap that is true i do have a larger roller, just not texture.

now that it's dry to the touch the normal roller definitely doesn't have texture like the jtr speakers do.

ill see how my next coat comes out though.

i believe Jeff uses LineX on the JTRs which is slightly different. I could be wrong, that may just be for the Pro ones

ah okay. well the duratex finish on the stands is definitely different than the speakers. they have more texture and just a different feel so you are probably right.

i have em finished now after a 2nd coat. i like the way they turned out.

i know that duratex has a curing time period of a few days. i finished painting last night around like midnight. would you have any fear of putting the stands on a light colored carpet already? or should i wait a bit for them to cure before i do that? i'd hate to get some kind of stain on the carpet lol.
