I've got a 3.4 after freshman year as a Mech E student. I put in almost no effort... My roommate (a business major mind you) struggled to keep his 3.0 and grumbles constantly about it.

Secondly, like everyone else said I think your post count is the reason you don't have a good GPA. :p I myself got an A in Calc 3 last year and a B+ in in Physics 2. I had to study quite a bit, but it's worth it if you want to understand the info. I take other classes, but those aren't really that important. My major is Comp Eng/Elec Eng with minors in Physics, Math, and Philosophy (hopefully I can get a major in that if I can get some sort of scholarship to pay for that) I don't ever take notes, and I think this is the best way to go. I really wanna teach one day and I think taking notes is the absolute worst thing any kid can do. Half the time you take notes you don't ever get the information your teacher is telling you, because you are so focused on writing crap down. Couple that with the fact that most teachers go straight outta the book, writing down notes is utterly pointless IMO. I have focused on just learning the concepts and not memorizing useless formulas (half the time you can derive them yourself if you understand what's going on, or just look them up). Of course this doesn't work in all subject areas since a lot of other subjects involve memorizing terms and such (dummy majors). I guess the point is you gotta just get your priorities straight. My first year of college I was a retard and got caught up trying to get with girls. I finished with a 3.122 but failed Calc 1 and had to take it over. Now I have grown up cuz I realized that if I didn't I would be living on a street corner. :) Seriously though, I think it just boils down to how well you want to do. I personally think grades are crap, I'm just worried about getting the info. Lot's of people put so much into GPA it's crazy, I would worry more about the information you can learn rather than what a teacher thinks you know.

It all depends though, some people need to take notes and some are all about high GPA's. After re-reading this post it doesn't make sense, but that's fine. The point is study if it's bothering you, but if you really don't care about grades then don't worry about it. I however would rather gain knowledge than look at a paper saying I have knowledge. Just get away from the computer man, and read a few books, you will be surprised at what is in there. :) :D ;)

I have a 3.692 GPA and I'm a Computer Eng. Major at Madison Wisconsin. I also don't work at a job. I spend most of my time studying and I ALWAYS go to class.

Does anyone else see a trend with the posts in this topic? With only a few exceptions (like Electric Amish), all of the people with low post counts have higher GPA's than folks with high post counts!

Keep that in mind the next time you have a choice between doing some extra credit work and posting in some ATOT neffing thread.

GPA: 2.8 after 2 years in BioE here at Berkeley. But had a 3.5 last semester, and seem to be getting the hang of it now :)

with the right work ethics, I(we) should be able to pull off a 3.0+ GPA by the time graduation hits.

Don't worry about your GPA though. IT'LL ONLY DETERMINE THE REST OF YOUR LIFE WHETHER YOU'RE RICH OR LIVING AS A BUM!

Do what I love and be high middle class, or do something I'd hate and be rich....I'm sticking with what I like! :D

Don't worry about the gpa, you have a job, you just need the paper, no one will care much about gpa

I have a 2.6 GPA after my first year in CS. After first semester it was 3.14. In second semester I started skipping a lot of classes and ended up taking an F in one of them. I generally study/do assignments for between 1 and 2 hours a day averaged out through a week.

how is bio egineering treating you? My roomate at cal was a bio E major.

EDIT: I should also warn you, he (my roomate) hasn't gotten a real job since he graduated (back in '01) . Of course he was a lazy bum, but I think the crum job market didn't help either.

I don't know why... in any case, your percentile has to be based off of some "score", plus I am sure many schools have percent rankings as well as gpa (one doesn't preclude the other).

when you do tests or assignments do you get letter grades instead of numerical grades?

i guess it probably depends on the school, but I have always gotten both. A number doesn't really tell you much with out knowing the distribution of grades.

EDIT: Also, when you said percentile, I assumed you meant some sort of ranking (ie, top 2%). Did you mean that or just a number out of 100 (like you got 95 on a test out of 100, but everyone else in the class might have gotten 96+ on the same test).

Didn't work at all my first two years, so my GPA right now is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3.4. Started picking up the pace last summer, and its starting to make a difference:

Summer '02 : A-, A
E&M Waves, Web Design ;)

Fall '02 : A-, A, A+
Signals and Systems, Computer Networks and Telecom, Advanced Comp Architecture

Spring '03 : A, A, A
RF Microelectronics, Quantum Mechanics, Complex Analysis

And yes, I did take more than three classes/semester, its just that the others were BS humanities that I didn't care about and took pass/fail.

Before you tell me how easy I have it, I'm an ECE/A&EP at Cornell University. :p

Hmm, perhaps I should keep this somewhat on topic... Your GPA is probably low because you've gotten used to performing at the level you are currently at. In high school, I remember aceing everything. In college, that didn't happen, so I just sat back and didn't really worry about it. You need to get a taste of the fruits of labor, that would provide a bit of motivation.

I agree completely. Money isn't everything, happiness is more important. But just to be safe I do real estate on the side to increase my financial security. I won't ever be rich but I will be content!
