GPA really doesn't mean much. If you go to a top-notch college and still graduate; thats good and you will definitely still find a good job. C's a pretty decent--as long as you understand the stuff then thats cool.

I'm in High School, no cloo about my GPA, but I get all A's and some B's in all Honors and AP classes.

How in the ^*T^&&%%$$ can someone have a 3.7+ in CS/CE and only study 1-5 hours a week?!?!? No offense but you must not be getting a very good education, you are only taking one class a quarter/semester, or you are some kind of genious. If you are taking any kind of programming class you know damn well you will be spending countless hours programming and that is only the homework side of it.

I just finished my freshman year in Computer Engineering at Texas A&M. My GPA is a 3.876, got a B in Physics. I study a lot, but I have to keep a 3.5 to keep my scholarship. I'd say I study probably 2-3 hours per day, maybe a little more sometimes when necessary. I mean, think about it, you sleep 7 hours a day, that leaves 17 hours left..your in class for 4 or 5 hours (tops), if you study another 4 hours, you still have half the day to blow.

compsci here.... 2.6 gpa. i decided to do a lot of other things in college. i have a job for one thing. i sold stuff on ebay (a lot of stuff).

i guess i traded my gpa for the oppurtunity to meet people, learn to be a leader, sing, dance, smoke, drink and just have a life. i've grown a lot as a person in college and it was totally worth doing bad in school. that and i dont really try too hard on anything that isnt a fun programming project... bah oh well. graduating in a week... lets see if i can find a job.

as for you guys' adjustments thing. i know i'm smart. that doesnt mean i deserve a higher gpa. im sure to get a 4.0 gpa in polisci isnt that hard, but you have to do things like actually go to class.

gpa means you care. or you like to do bs work. or both. i on the other hand only rarely care about the work but when i do do a good job. i am one of those people, who editorials point out does not correlate test scores in high school with gpa.

you can do well in college and still have a life. maybe not if you're working full time though 40+ hours/week.

Woah woah woah... you finished with a 2.3 GPA and you already have a job in THIS market? What kind of job do you have? And did you get it through a friend or relative or something? That seems to be the best shot at getting a job these days. I think it's funny how a lot of the business majors at my school said they had jobs lined up this year, but then you dig deeper and they're working for their parents. But it's a "management" position. Managing what the coffee pot? Oh how nice it would be to live in a meritocracy. The world is truly run by the unintelligent unfortunately. I got passed over for one job by a guy who failed his senior comps twice. I scored in the two 10% of my class. Not that I wanted to work in Georgia, but why did he get that job over me? Because he knew someone. When another company came to interview at my school, it was obvious that they only really had one guy in mind for a possible job, the rest of us were just pity interviews. Again, he knew someone in the company. Sure, it's about more than just GPA - personality plays a part as well. What qualifies as a good personality these days? Making meaningless smalltalk and responding with the same few phrases over and over again (yeah? oh really? that's interesting.) or being able to carry on an intelligent conversation? I guess they'd just prefer a football player over me. Screw them all, it's their loss.

For the record - I just graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science/Systems. 3.73 GPA, 3.9 in computer science classes (those gen eds raped me...), and as for work load? Jeesh. Well I usually tried to keep up on reading, that was an hour or so a night probably. Plus I'd study maybe 4-6 hours the night before a test. Plus programming... Really depends on the class. Some projects took 20 hours, some took 1 hour. My toughest week in college was when I did my senior project. We only had one week to do it, it's not that I put it off or anything. My partner and I spent 100 hours each working on the project in one week. Apparantly we went well beyond what they were expecting from the project, but we were doing it for a non-profit group, so we wanted them to have something that was really good.

Hahahahahaha... Either you are exaggerating a bit, or your computer science curriculum was not very difficult. I didn't think mine was all that challenging, but the project load alone was more than 1-3 hours a week... per class! And I wasn't exactly the slowest in my class.

I had a simlar GPA in university.
I suck at trying hard in classes that don't interest me.
Same with me. I am glad I didn't have a 2.X across the board though (ie, not all classes were a C); I had from Fs to As which indicates heavily to me my results in a course were related to how much interest I had as opposed to any overall lack of competence. I wouldn't say I had ADHD but I've always had a problem applying myself to something I find no interest in and when I do have an interest in something I can zone in 100% for extended periods of time.

I've gotten a little better over time but damn I'd rather do anything that spend time studying some useless sh*t I despise.

mugsywwiiiDon't be so negative :) I've had three real jobs since I finished university. The first was a _shoe-in_ because the employer was a friend of my brother's from the yacht club. It doesn't get much tigher than sailing buddies. The second I actually got entirely by myself. The third I got because a friend hooked me up with it. Contacts are worth SO freaking much. Always has been that way too. But there are lots of jobs that are given to strangers and if you're competing with other strangers your resume/interview will be what sets you apart.

That aside if you land a job at a company because of a contact that contact may get you the job but if you really rise above the rest in the ranks it's going to depend less upon that initial contact and more upon your true capabilities within the job.

For what it's worth at my university in New Brunswick if you had a 3+ GPA (4.3 I recall was the tops) and it wasn't in a pissant discipline (business at my university was rather a joke for instance) you could only get it by being either quite smart or putting time in. Getting really high grades (high 3's) required both intelligence and a lot of hardwork. I would doubt anybody but Einstein could have gotten a 3.8+ with only a couple hours/week work. You have to pay your dues sometime. I knew of several VERY smart people who put in a whole hell of a lot of hours of work in a science major and couldn't do any better than high 3's.

~3.7 gpa as a Operations Research major (Econ minor) at columbia univ
don't really study too much.... i just go to class, pay attention, read the book, do the hw, read the book and notes before test...
the only real time i need to study is before a test.... but keeping up with the material in class's always worked for me...

And as the the posts about jobs... the company i'm interning for (Northrup Grumman) doesn't care about goa all that much.... a lot of the people who work here have gpa's close to 3.0... they're looking for hard working people who are interested in their work and are willing to put the effort to do a good job... and if you show a company that, they'd be willing to hire you...

my manager was talking to this other intern the other day about a person who had submitted their resume, gpa was 3.2.... but he heard from the other intern that this person worked hard so even before interviewing her he was interested in hiring her....

3.95 Computer Science. I study an average of a few hours a day, I suppose (Those all-day projects and papers really up the average).

[Edit]I'm also finishing up my second year at UCSB, so those I haven't hit those difficult upper-division classes, yet. I expect them to drop my GPA a bit.[/Edit]

Lets see how I'm currently stacking up
2.5 in CS/EE
4.0 in Sociology

Yup ... when it comes to math and HARD work, I run out of time and take it up the rear with what I earned.

Although I graduated 12 years ago (geez has is really been that long!), I finished with a 3.51 overall and a 3.63 math/sci.
Studied about 1 hr per (week) day, and about 5 on Sundays. I found this was the best way to do it. Review each days material, then study hard on Sunday.

freshman year I was drunk all the time and attended ~60% of classes. Got somewhere around 3.2. Sophomore year I got tired of that stuff and started attending classes and studying. GPA jumped to 3.7. Then my parents stopped paying and I dropped out. :)

I have 3.08 GPA. Due to me working close to 60 hours per week during my sophomore year which killed my GPA.
My Junior and Senior year I have 3.6.
I graduated with finance + marketing and still no job... :(

Who says you should be able to make this .5 gpa addition? Usually people who go into scientific fields have been adept at logical based courses their whole lives. So, why should someone who has always been good at writing or business be discounted just because they dont excel at math/science. Crock of b.s. if you ask me. Fact is, business majors run these scientific companies and in the end usually make more over time than any little engineer drawing out schematics in his/her cubicle. Just my 2 cents.

You didnt just compare engineering to buisness?????? Two totally different majors. Being an freshman engineer and having a roommate that is a business major, I am not gonna say that business majors do no work, but I will say that it gets me mad when my roommate brags about his 4.0 GPA and doesnt even study nearly as much as i do. AFter he has the nerve saying that he could get a 4.0 in engineering. Out of the gate, i will not say my roommate slacks, b/c he studies and is always aiming high, but I will say that Engineers and Comp Sci majors have a work load that business majors will die if they had (6-7 classes each semester, you are basiaclly overloading every semester). In business, you need a high GPA (3.6) to be considered for a high end job, however, Engineers need a 3.2. The fact is, lots of people in the buisiness world do not have business degrees. Infact, at my aunts graduation (she got a BS in Business Management) they had a guest speaker who was CEO and graduated with a 2.6 GPA in JOURNALISM! I am not saying that a business degree is useless, because they do hold their place in the business world, but i am saying that business is more of a go getter market.

Damn, I dislike your roommate already. I'd love to see that arrogant pisshead follow through.
