My friend called Phelps a hypocrite jackass.

I personally don't think it is a big deal, he apologized for it... game over. My friends does not buy into his apology and said "he probably read a statement prepared by his PR people so he could concentrate on putting his best puppy-face on" ... goes on to calling him hypocrite jackass.

What he did, did not affect what I think of the guy... but that's just me.

How is he a hypocrite? Has he demonized weed before? I dont get how he is hypcritical, hes already gotten a DUI if you remember.

Also, weed is harmless. That is why nobody cares, except for your friend.

I don't understand your friend.. is he upset that Phelps smokes weed, or that he apologized for the picture or what?

Would he have apologized if he hadn't been caught?

Probably not.

So one can infer that he didn't want to apologize, but he did anyway because of pressure from external sources.

So he said one thing, while he believes another.

Pretty much the definition of a hypocrite.

I don't think that's quite the correct use of the word "hypocrite" but I think I understand what your friend is saying... but yeah I disagree. A couple of his big sponsors are still behind him and one basically released a statement that said it's a non-issue.

How can you apologize for something if you haven't been caught doing it? who would you apologize to? How would they know what you were apologizing for? this is like some kind of weird causality paradox, it's hurting my brain.. I need to go smoke some tobacco from my waterpipe.

Thats a hypothetical situation that you know nothing about. how can you infer someone is a hypocrite from a hypothetical situation (that he didnt want to apologize)?

If athletes can drink then smoking pot shouldn't be a big deal. As long as it doesn't affect his performance in a positive way, I don't see the problem regarding his athletic career.

There are several assumptions you are making there, and layering assumptions on top of other assumptions just gets you farther from the truth. Hell, why not just assume that since he does drugs (weed/alcohol) he must take steroids too, since those are just another drug.

It's hypocritical b/c he's already apologized for such behavior (dui) and that it wasn't going to happen again.

Um what? He apologized for a DUI, which hasn't happened again since

Right, he was arrested driving stoned. That explains everything.
Oh, wait...

If he apologized when he wasn't really sorry, it would make him insincere, not a hypocrite. I believe he is insincere about the apology, and I don't blame him. It's asinine that he has to cowtow to the straight edge puritan lunatics in this country.

Separately, the fact that Phelps can smoke weed and still be one of the most dominant athletes in the world is a powerful argument against it's demonization. That's why people are freaking out.

How come no-one cares when Shawn White smokes pot?

i wouldn't say a hypocrite, but definitely an idiot. you'd think that people would learn that when they're in the media spotlight and getting endorsement money, they need to stay squeaky clean .... or at least do stupid stuff at home when no one has a camera around.

Because its a given that 99% of all snowboarders have or do smoke pot.

Phelps never told me not to smoke pot. Hypocrisy is lacking here.

This. Also, why the hell should I care what he chooses to do with his body? Looks to me like he treats it a lot better than most of the nanny's who are crying about this do

They should, I can verify from personal experience that pot smoke is a performance enhancer when it comes to the sport of Snowboarding.
