He's a hypocrite because HE LIKES SMOKING WEED, and rather than say that it was childish/irresponsible/bad, like he did, he should have said I LIKE TO SMOKE THE GANJ, you people can suck my 5 gold medal having ass, I owe you zero.

Then he could have my respect as well. I think the OPs friend is correct; HYPOCRITE.

Separately, the fact that Phelps can smoke weed and still be one of the most dominant athletes in the world is a powerful argument against it's demonization. That's why people are freaking out.

How come no-one cares when Shawn White smokes pot?

I disagree. His fame makes him an automatic role model. Using his fame to promote anything other than his actual attitude is a lie and hypocritical. When he goes and smokes pot tomorrow, he is a hypocrite.

I'd be shocked if someone didn't try to extort from him first....now there's your story;)

If he goes out and smokes pot after the bullshit apology, then he's a hypocrite, no matter the reason. I don't smoke pot and don't give a fuck if other people do but he's still a hypocrite if he still smokes it.

Agree with poster above, aside from the puritanical views of "drugs = bad," he's much healthier then 99.99999% of the people.

What?

If he can smoke pot and win 8 gold medals more power to him. He's my role model: for smoking pot and winning 8 gold medals.

He did pot. Boo-effing hoo. His apology probably was forced and fake, but so what.

My mom was saying how shameful it was. Me, being surrounded by potheads since starting highschool, couldn't care less.

see i don't find it shameful at all. ITS JUST POT (no i don't do pot and none of my friends (that i know of) do it either).

i really do not care that a 20something kid at a party got a hit off it. it does nto change the fact he is an amazing swimmer.

its not going to stop me from buying something he is promoting (granted i also wouldnt buy it because he is promoting it either) if i need it.

I was watching the news last night and they danced around this subject. They would not say he was smoking pot from a bong, they said he was using a glassy type object used for the inhalation of smoke fumes from a burning plant with questions to it's legality.
I think the news people are stoners.

That apology is akin to forced statements by hostages to gain their release IMHO. The hypocrisy is peoples phony outrage. I have a little more respect for the guy myself.

You make a good point. When are these "hero" athletes going to stand up for themselves.
In fact his moral cowardice has shown me that he is anything but a "role model".

So let's chastise him everytime he speeds, litters, and jaywalks too.

The boy's payday isn't from swimming in the Olympics or winning medals. The payday comes from endorsements after the fact.

If he were to do as you suggest, he'd have the respect of many, many young people and probably many not-young people. But he's going to lose his endorsements and that kind of money doesn't come from swimming around in a pool.

Phelps should apologize for hanging around the type of losers who would sell him out to make some cash off that photo.

He doesn't owe you or anybody an apology about what he chooses to ingest. Too bad he doesn't have the guts to say so.
