My debit card does not allow tips

I've stopped using my credit card and gone debit recently to simplify and lower my spending. One thing I've noticed, however, is that whenever I eat out Citibank only deducts the original bill. They do not allow the tip to be included. I'm not sure how the process works on the restaurant's end but it's not going through. I have mixed feelings. I feel bad that the workers are not getting their tips but I'm also saving a lot. Until they recognize what is going on, I can have a good reputation and (presumely) get better service.

how long has it been, it might appear as a separate transaction after a few days, also balance your account and make sure its accurate.

Dont worry about the servers they get their share at the end of they day, the manager will battle it out with the bank

Go back and check the amount of the charge a few days later. Normally the original amount of the bill is authorized on the card as pending. You add the tip, give it to the server, then the receipts are put into the system at the end of the day or even a day or two later. Once the restaurant actually submits the final totals on the bills + tip, they get sent to your bank when then modifies the original pending charge to the final total and posts it to your account.

Whenever I go out to eat at a sitdown place, the bill shows up for the receipt total in my Bank of America account instantly as pending. Usually doesn't change to the total amount for 2 or 3 days at least.

Thanks for ruining it. I wanted the OP to start giving huge tips thinking he wasn't going to get charged for them.

This, how can the tip be on it when it's added after the card is ran? The restaurant has to submit the receipt with the tip amount to the banks, then it will change to show the total amount.

It depends. If you make your tip obscene, the bank will reject it outright.

Maybe they'll catch on and no longer accept debit cards?

Also, that's pretty fucked your debit cost less than credit. My credit card has no fees, but my debit card costs 50 cents every transaction.

How is he knowingly stiffing them? He's paying his bill and the waitstaff are getting their paychecks.

lol. I had one credit card and my debit card. When my potential fees and interest rate went up without any fault of my own, I shut it down. It was also better to have one card to manage. Also, with a debit card, if there is no money in the checking account, nothing gets approved. I mainly purchase items online and am suspicious of any transactional headaches. Also, Citibank has Thank You points which are very good.

Who cares what the interest rate on a CC is. Get a CC with good rewards and no fees. So what if it's 29% APR or whatever. Just pay it off every cycle so you don't pay interest and get your rewards.

Never screw with the people who prepare your food. If you're screwing them and they know it, good luck not getting a loogieburger.

They also lowered the maximum amount I could purchase. I used to pay everything on time. However, what's the point when the CC company is waiting for you to fuck up so they can pounce?

Ignore them, Narmer. There's no reason to have a credit card if you don't want one.

I've been watching for months now. Small tips go through (I should change the OP) but large tips are non-existent.

So get a different card and fuck them.

No way bro, putting your bank account into overdraft is way better than credit card interest. My mom told me so.

29% interest / 12 months * $500 bill = $12 credit fee for that month

Going 1 penny into overdraft = $324890723904834 fee

As you can see, $12 going to Visa is significantly more expensive than $34309823049908 going to Citibank.
