What bank is it? I think tips are a travesty and would like to open an account.

I've stopped using my credit card and gone debit recently to simplify and lower my spending. One thing I've noticed, however, is that whenever I eat out Citibank only deducts the original bill. They do not allow the tip to be included. I'm not sure how the process works on the restaurant's end but it's not going through. I have mixed feelings. I feel bad that the workers are not getting their tips but I'm also saving a lot. Until they recognize what is going on, I can have a good reputation and (presumely) get better service.

I've been watching for months now. Small tips go through (I should change the OP) but large tips are non-existent.

So just to be clear, it isn't true that you debit cards doesn't allow tips, but that you noticed that large tips over a certain dollar threshold are denied and now you purposefully tip large amounts when you intend to not leave a tip?

Yep. His bank is probably assuming that the waiter is tacking on a tip that he didn't authorize when in reality he's the one authorizing it, knowing that his bank will say no.

I just don't understand the motivation, if he is taking a stand and not tipping because the server threw soup in his lap why fake it? Why not just put down 0 tip.

Maybe they'll catch on and no longer accept debit cards?

Also, that's pretty fucked your debit cost less than credit. My credit card has no fees, but my debit card costs 50 cents every transaction.

My debit card has no fees and I can even get money out for free at a shit load of ATMs across the nation(7-11). My CC has no fees, but I hardly use it because I just don't like spending money that isn't mine. It's mostly for emergencies. I will say though having shitty credit because you hardly ever use credit sucks.
