One of the guys here asked me if he could have Friday off so he could read the new Harry Potter book.

Please tell me that's not true.

It's not that I am astounded that someone would want Friday off to read it. But to freely admit it as the reason you want the day off...

Sadly it is true.

He also wanted the day off for the following:

WoW expansion being released
LoTR online being released
Sci Fi convention was in town and Nimoy was speaking in the early afternoon.

I'm sure there are more I have forgotten about...

He got none of those days off......I'm surprised he keeps asking.

Haha. Nice.

I'd give him the day off just for sheer honesty. Or make him come in on Saturday or Sunday for a few hours.

Wow, you're tough. Ours are PTOs, which I believe should be used for whatever the employee desires. I pretty much let my people take off for whatever they want as long as it doesn't put the team in a bad spot (and they have the time built up).

And I'm surprised he's still employed.

why would you fire someone for asking for a day off?

im guessing he's never applied for a day off to have wild sex with supermodels

The only sex he ever has that isn't with himself is when he pays for it.

Which he openly admits.....frequently....like it is some damn badge of honor.

but i bet his level 70 dood in WoW attracts all the elf wimmins

lol, one of my friends has a coworker who's worse than that, Shiner...
They're both draftsmen. My friend has to carry the load of two people a few months out of the year because the other guy is busy designing castles and midieval weapons and stuff. He then actually builds these things to take to some sort of midieval themed getaway. Every year, he takes an unpaid week off to attend some sort of festival where he becomes one of the characters.

Not that it's necessarily that bad to have such a hobby - but to let if affect your work performance, AND to take an unpaid week off because you already use your vacation time to spend with your family?? That's probably taking it a bit too far.

and darn it... "midieval" doesn't look right, but I'm not looking up how to spell it.

The funniest part about this thread, is that everyone is sitting here complaining about the activities of their coworkers, on and off the clock...while you are sitting in an online forum typing it...Probably from your work computer.

Seriously, if he has PTO; who cares what he takes it off for? I had some time built up a month ago and took it off just cause i needed a "mental health day". thats what i told my boss i was doing; staying home and sleeping. It's my PTO, i'll take it how i want!

I sat next to a guy just like that. He started taking ADD meds (no kidding) and he's much better.

How about a Project Manager who, when seeing an approaching storm, was too ornery to grab a tube of silicone caulk and climb a 24 ft. ladder to seal a roof crack, allowing the rain to get in onto and ruin a brand new $68K Gym floor?
Entire floor had to be replaced, at our cost.
His explanation: He stated that he called the roofers, who weren't on site that day, since it WAS a roof crack, and directed them to drive 180 miles to seal a 1/4" X 2' crack and that they didn't get there on time! (Yes, they actually agreed to come!) Meanwhile, he was sitting in his office trailer reading or surfing the 'net.
Sure, these things are not our responsibility as Construction Managers, but I believe I could have sacrificed 20 minutes to save the trouble that this caused.
That was 8 years ago, we lost a good customer over that, and for some strange reason, he is still with us!

Beat ya by 3 minutes. :p

Plus, it's "corporate accounts payable", not what you wrote.

Shiner, when you denied all these days off, did he not have vacation or something? If he did, aren't you being kind of a dick by deciding the way he wants to take his own vacation days isn't good enough for you? They're his vacation days.

If he was just asking for days off without pay, to the detriment of the department, then he's a moron.

Yeah if you had PTO it doesn't matter. I guess I assumed that he didn't and was specifically asking for that day off.

I had a coworker who refered to MS-DOS as "MS-Dose." To which another coworker said, "Yeah it comes after MS-UNO." (thankfully this coworker was kidding, sadly the former coworker was not)

One of our managers talking to this guy:

"How long will it takes you to make one cable."
"I don't know. Five minutes?"
"Then how many can you get done today?"
"Uh... ten?"
