FWIW I'd prefer the E46 M3 over current gen as well but with a HPF Stage 3 kit to take care of current and future M3s/M5s and end any "mine's newer" pissing contests before they start.

I say go with the car you really love period. Handing, performance, it's is only a matter of some bushings and a turbo kit (simplifying things but you know what I mean).

What do you always see on the new generation of every model year? "Better handling due to: improved bushings, thicker sway bars, better shocks, wider tires, better rack ratio, new gears, blah blah blah"... well you can buy those things for *any* car, it's all a matter of what you really want. If you are rich and just love the way a Kia Rio looks but don't want to deal with smug M3s/M5s, you can make you're Rio blow both of them away in every category and redo the interior to some rare croc skins or whatever you want.

Have the car you want AND make it perform better than newer cars. Win/Win. Real car guys like cars, they don't care about being "first" or having the "newest" on the block every 6 months. There are car guys, then there are guys who sell their '11 Corvette for a same model-trim '12 Corvette because it has 5 more HP and park them outside their empty garage for the neighbors to see.

FWIW, that was sarcasm.

I think that, for the most part at least, you're preaching to the choir here.

Funnily enough though...my *mom* is that person you mentioned at the end of your post. Except she keeps it garaged so that NO ONE can see it.
Traded a *beautiful* C4 convertable for a C5, then the C5 for a C6, then the C6 for a Miata (yes, you did read that right...), then the Miata for a convertable C6 which she still has. She's weird. But like you said...too each their own.

At least she upgraded with each major generation, that's not something you can "mod" on an older car if you like the new sheet metal. I'm talking about people who just can't stand the same model just a year newer having 5 HP more than them when there are no other differences...

Either car could be easily modded to make up whatever HP number you wanted, but no, they have to sell/trade just for that 5 HP on a sheet of paper so they can post the OEM brochure up on the outside of the cubical wall :colbert:

This is the reason I'm not buying the last-gen V10 M5. I don't want to feel outdated in a few months. I want people to envy me for longer.

...and when they don't, make damn sure to post about it anyway 15 times a day, and blame their disinterest on jealousy. ;)

I got to drive a 09 M5... it was definitely powerful and solid, even at high speeds, but not something I would buy.

Why's that? I've also driven the E60 M5 and found it to be exactly what I was looking for. Four doors, spacious, luxurious, and powerful. The wife has mandated a sedan or wagon. I can't see a damn thing out of a CTS-V, despite my 6'2" frame. I would consider the M3 sportier, more nimble at least, but I can't get over the M5 or E-Class AMG.

What does any of that matter! Are you going to let your buddy have the last laugh are will you drop the bomb that instead of 4-5 years you replace in 3 years with CL-63AMG and blow his mind. Icing on the cake would be within the first few weeks to also NOT hit a pothole.

Any idea the depreciation curve would be like for an 06 M3? Would it be wise to bail on it inside of 10 years or will you not be hurt too much holding on to for 4-5 years?

Are you trying to troll or legitimately clueless?

The whole one-up thing was tongue in cheek, I decided against the S5 right here on ATG

Wow...

I thought you legitimately felt one-upped...

Even in light of the fact you decided against the S5 for yourself I thought maybe you still felt one upped because as far as appearances go, if your 2 cars were parked next to eachother the average joe schmoe would see the newer looking one and be like wow, not knowing how low mileage your M3 was or the fact you preferred the E46 to the E90 and S5, because joe schmoe has seen newer BMWs on the road.

So no I wasn't trying to troll I legitimately thought you felt that way. Didn't realize you were bashing your own buddy.

The new version of my car has adjustable suspension and mine doesn't. Does this fall in to your 5hp mark that I covet this? ;)

Actually my E46 M3 has gotten more attention than E90/92s when parked next or nearby especially at BMW dealerships.

But since you are only trying to troll me probably won't matter.

What do you drive?

If I was looking for the same things you were, I would be interested in a M5. I don't need four doors, spacious... nor do I have a wife that mandates what I buy. For me, a 2012 M3 Cab was a much better option!

I'm not trying to troll. I'm glad it has worked out for you and somebody with a brand new S5 didn't one up you. Thankfully the people in south florida appreciate the quality of the E46 and don't just care about newer looks that the S5 or E90 brings to the table. That means you made an excellent purchase.

I drive a 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, heated faux leather seats, moonroof, 5-CD disc changer, satellite radio (really should have gotten the aux audio in but i overlooked that, whoops!). I got a sport muffler and sport pedals so for a girl car it rumbles, but i've grown tired of the noise, the pedals are nice though. I average 23-25MPG, straight highway trip going ~80 its close to 30 though. I feel like the mileage has gotten better since I hit 50k tbh.

The first I drove a E60 it was love at first drive. A car that big and nimble with enough space in the back for me to have three car seats.

Looking forward to your upgrade this year! Definitely time to put it to pasture, I had a 97 GTI VR6 I bought new in 96. I couldnt see keeping a car of that price point more than 50k or so, definitely not past 5 years...time to throw the reins to someone for a decent first car.

Depends if you legitimately want that feature and it's not cost effective or possible to upgrade yourself. The magnetic shocks are the easy part, integrating the sensors, ECUs, dash controls, etc may not be feasible.

Was referring more to how some people don't know anything about their cars at all who only buy for image alone. The kind that would upgrade just for the 18 way swivel cup holder only to wow their co workers Monday morning.

My goal for the car is 150-200k. Will replace sooner if it starts breaking down on me and maintenance costs become excessive, but depending on if and when that happens and how much, I can't nail down for sure what my maintenance costs would need to be in order for me to bail on the car.

So if you are around here in 2016 or so, you'll see my searching for car thread.

So what is this thread really about then? Are you admitting this thread is pointless?

Well you can't be awesome if nobody cares, thanks for providing me the fuel I crave!

true, but you cant be hated either if you keep your mouth shut.

nail hit on the head there sir, well bowled. Gold star.
