FWIW I'd prefer the E46 M3 over current gen as well but with a HPF Stage 3 kit to take care of current and future M3s/M5s and end any "mine's newer" pissing contests before they start.
I say go with the car you really love period. Handing, performance, it's is only a matter of some bushings and a turbo kit (simplifying things but you know what I mean).
What do you always see on the new generation of every model year? "Better handling due to: improved bushings, thicker sway bars, better shocks, wider tires, better rack ratio, new gears, blah blah blah"... well you can buy those things for *any* car, it's all a matter of what you really want. If you are rich and just love the way a Kia Rio looks but don't want to deal with smug M3s/M5s, you can make you're Rio blow both of them away in every category and redo the interior to some rare croc skins or whatever you want.
Have the car you want AND make it perform better than newer cars. Win/Win. Real car guys like cars, they don't care about being "first" or having the "newest" on the block every 6 months. There are car guys, then there are guys who sell their '11 Corvette for a same model-trim '12 Corvette because it has 5 more HP and park them outside their empty garage for the neighbors to see.
