People opposed to gun control are fearful of what it's a step towards. You can see the baby steps being made towards our freedom to own guns being taken away if you aren't caught in the debate over the new gun legislation of the month. What's ironic is that the democrats don't even particularly care about gun control, they just use scare tactics to whip the lowest common denominator into a frenzy over whatever issue is the easiest, and feed off of that by offering them a feel good solution in order to garner votes.

concealed weapon permits are available in 44 of the 50 states. In 38 of those states you 'may' apply for reciprocity (allowing you to carry within additional states even though you aren't a resident. In 26 states you may apply for a concealed weapon license on line or through the mail even if you aren't a resident of that state.

State laws very widely. In WA I obtained my permit 34 days after turning 21 by applying, submitting to a background check, and paying $60 for 5 yrs. It isn't hard as long as you have a clean record. I currently can carry concealed in 14 states and I'm constantly increasing my area.

I have only had 1 encounter with someone I turned in/arrested, and it never escalated to weapons. However I know many many officers, lawyers, and even store clerks that have been harrassed, attacked, and in one case killed by people they damaged in some way. It's very likely in today's society.

Well....knives can indeed be just as deadly as guns.Just last week it was reported on CNN that a madman who worked for an elementary school killed eight children.....with a knife.

Amen, ulfwald. Why should we be made defenseless? I also agree with you about background checks(INSTANT!),and no waiting period. The waiting period was put into law under the guise that there had to be a 'cooling off' period'.

Unfortunately,if someone is threatened, they are forced to be helpless for several days. Many, many people have been killed due to the 'waiting period'.

Usually the people who are killed are the elderly, sick, women, and people with an immediate threat. The most vulnerable are the least empowered to defend themselves.

We need guns. Once guns taken away from our hands, who Is going to protect us? Sure, the police will be watching us 24/7, but we demand privacy. It shouldn't be a crime to protect yourself from people trying to harm you.

Prescription drugs in the wrong hands can kill, do we as a Nation ban all drugs because maybe a toddler dies from an accidental overdose?

Well, I don't know about "very likely". My mother has put literally hundreds of people in jail and prison as a judge, and I know dozens of prosecutors, none of whom has ever had this problem. In all fairness, though, I have a friend who worked for years as an Assistant D.A. in Florida (not sure which county), and the local chief judge permitted prosecutors to carry concealed weapons IN COURT, which I always regarded as bizarre.

I think the members of the criminal-justice system likeliest to face a significant problem from this are probably those who prosecute organized crime or large drug conspiracies.
