JoeKing - not until you listen to sam cooke, buddy holly, and Ratty - Sunrise. Overall, I don't like smashing pumpkins or nirvana much at all...so your other choices are a little iffy.
You perfer classic rock by the sound of your picks. I'm giving you a sample of the greatest modern rock. Your ears haven't heard until you've listened through Pablo Honey and Siamese Dream.
Muse is often reffered to as a "harder" version of Radiohead. To some extent I agree. But think of their sound more a Radiohead ala Pablo Honey. They're poised to breakout in the US soon.
The Nirvana, well, it usually comes down to either you love em or hate em. But damn man you've gotta admire them. They created a new sound! And while the songs may seem simplistic the depth in the music is there.
But for peak sake man you said you want to hear good new music, at the very least listen to Pablo Honey. And please check out the Pumpkins "Cherub Rock", the first song on Siamese Dreams. The pumpkins sound was far diffrent than most of the recent stuff they released before the break up.
I think you missed my point. My point being that it seems unlikely that I'd enjoy any of those music suggestions and that you haven't provided any convincing reason that I would/should. Indeed, you expressly refused to. The reason I asked that people explain why a particular song would appeal to me and get my foot wedged into a new genre is to avoid the fanboi-ism that pervades everything. Otherwise, I'm sure some fool would come in here spouting how I should listen to eminem and all other music sucks or that 50 cent is the greatest thing since sliced bread and I must be a madman to be listening to all this old stuff. So when you post that I should listen to band A B and C because you said so...you'll have to forgive me if I don't whip out the credit card immediately and starting pulling down plastic. Essentially, you're just telling me the music YOU enjoy and assuming that because you enjoy it, I simply must. Therefore, I reciprocate. I enjoy listening to the beatles and buddy holly, therefore, you must immediately love it. What I need is more, why is so-and-so good music?
The music I like is music that stands on its own merits and I'm generally of the impression that pretty much everything put out nowadays is garbage. I used to think house music was all derivative and just the same *thump**thump**thump**thump* until someone showed me that I was wrong and it was just bad sound systems and bad song selection that caused that stereotype. For instance, once you get past the weed culture stereotype, Hendrix is an absolutely brilliant musician. Once you get past the Xtasy popping party culture, you'll find lots of people like Sandra Collins or Flip and Fill produce some really good house and trance music.
For instance, I've just spent the past hour or so listening to stone temple pilots and already I can tell there's going to be a lot of their music I will never like. But there are a few which I am enjoying. I'm well aware that I'll probably never really develop a fondness for any suggestion here over what I already enjoy, but the whole point of this exercize is to at least be able to appreciate and enjoy other things and realize that not everything put out in the past 2 decades blows. Plus, you never know...I used to hate electronic music.
PS - my personal opinion of Nirvana is that they are to rock music what britney spears is to pop music (OMGWTF Crucify him!!!). Cobain was, in my estimation, an above average musician, but he wasn't doing anything that hadn't been done before and, arguably, done better. Hell, every other non-musical word out of his mouth was some angsty protest that he had sold out his "culture" and was being unoriginal. The only difference was, he was a marketing juggernaut. Spears is the same, she hasn't done anything that hadn't been done before, if not much better, by madonna, paula abdul, mariah, so on and so forth, the only diff, she's a marketing supernova.
yeah and it's called do some of your own fvcking research! I'll point the way but fvck you if you want me to hold your hand. How long would it take for you to "aquire" a cd? I don't know about you, but it would take me less than than 5 mins if I felt so inclined. So why don't you just fire up whatever method of music acquirement you use and download some of the music? You said you're interested in Alt Rock well I gave you a list of what in MY opinion are the best of that genre.
Tip use google, use amazon.com put the names of the albums people reccomended into amazons search and read the reviews if you want proof.
And I never said there was anything wrong with the "classics" I grew up listening to that stuff. But it's old and the cds I mentioned are an evolution of that music.
But you know if you really lump Nirvana in with BS then I'm just going to give up any hope for you.
Just because I post in your thread doesn't mean I have to follow your rules.
