I have been trying to get in shape for the last few months. I've been going out and jogging a mile a few times a week, and I'm starting to get used to it and get over the initial hurdles of building up muscle mass. However, last week I started dieting to help lose weight, and I lost 4 pounds in a week. Now my thigh on my left side feels spongy started happening yesterday. Like if I push on it or move it much it feels like I can feel the blood squirting in and out of the muscle as if you were squeezing a wet sponge.

Is this normal for working up leg strength or is this due to dieting and my diet is eating away at the muscle? It has me worried because I hope its not a blood clot or anything. I'm hoping those who have more experience may be able to shed some light on the situation before I am forced to go to the doctor (no insurance here).

Thanks for any feedback anybody can provide.

Well, it's not a blood clot unless it feels very, very warm to the touch, is inflamed, and is sensitive. And what exactly do you mean by spongy? Losing 4 pound in one week will make you lose a lot of fat AND muscle so that could be effecting it. However, have you felt your legs recently? Was it like that before and maybe you didn't notice?

Hi SociallyChallenged,

No, my leg doesn't feel warm or sensative, so it must not be a blood clot. It doesn't actually feel out of the ordinary at all other than the sensation I'm feeling.

I believe this is a new issue because everytime I sit and stand it causes the muscles to contract, etc, and I can feel something there. And like I mentioned it sort of feels as if a sponge would under water being squeezed and contracted, kind of a squishy sensation. I can also cause the feeling by grabbing the entire muscle and squeezing it myself while it's relaxed. I started feeling it yesterday morning but thought it was my shorts on the muscle sliding up and down on the hairs giving me the sensation on the back of the leg. But now I realize its actually on the inside.

It just seems/feels odd, never experienced the issue before. Hopefully it will go away I'll give it another day or two before I worry about it too much. Althought it does seem worse today than yesterday but it could be because it has my attention.

The only explanation I can think of for any part of your body feeling that way is that you have an injury that has caused swelling in that area. You should see a doctor.

Unless this is just fat on your legs that you never noticed the consistency of before or something.

See, swelling would make it less long a sponge though. Inflammation usually makes things tight and it usually impedes certain movements. I wouldn't equate that sort of feeling with spongy squeezing.

It may be the skin that hasn't regained elasticity quite yet maybe. I really have no idea. If it doesn't hurt, I wouldn't worry too much. If it bothers you a lot, go to the doctor.

i wasn't sure how literal he's being about spongy. the first time i ever tried boxing several years ago I kept throwing punches and hyper-extending my elbow. the next day my elbow was totally swollen, but not painful or discolored. Radius of my arm at the elbow doubled over night. the flesh was weird and i can see how someone might call it spongy. easy to tell that it was full of blood.
