Much to my surprise, Acupuncture is drastically reducing my allergies

So my wife had been going for months and kept raving about how amazingly relaxing it was. I never believed her until I started going about 2 months ago to see if they could help with my allergies and a little relaxation to boot.

I've had rough seasonal allergies for a number of years now, combined with a very strong cat dander allergy. Anytime I go into anyones house who owns a cat, my throat/roof of mouth gets immediately scratchy, my eyes swell up and get itchy and my nose starts to stuff up. Its even worse staying overnight in a house with cats, which unfortunately my parents have. Everytime I go home to visit, the symptoms usually started within 10-15 minutes and the only thing that would help calm then down was Benadryl, which worked decently but always made me super sleepy. I usually had to vacuum the bed off right after arriving since the cat had usually slept there sometime recently and the cat fur would drive my allergies wild.

Anyway, so I started going to Acupuncture about 2 months ago and was very happy to find out my wife was right how relaxing it really is. It takes her about 3-5 minutes to put all the needles in (which you really don't feel at all - they are incredibly thin), then she puts a warm lamp over you and leaves the room. I usually fall asleep within a couple of minutes and she wakes me up in an hour when its time to go. Simple and painless.

Anyway, the seasonal allergies have been getting better (which I mostly attributed to the seasons changing somewhat), so I couldn't tell whether or not the treatments were working, but this weekend I had the chance to visit my parents house to take care of their cat while they are on vacation. I came armed with my usual benadryl and loritidine, fully expecting to have to use them at some point over the weekend.

Well, much to my amazement, I was perfectly fine. No sneezing, no itchy throat, no stuffy nose. Nothing. I even let her climb all over me (which I never let her do anymore) and I was fine, not so much as even a sniffle.

Now, I dunno how much is placebo (then again, i really didn't think this would work to be honest - so would placebo even play in?), i figured I would just give it a try before resorting to expensive allergy shots. But hey, even if it is, for whatever reason, it worked.

😱 😀

That's awesome! I'v always wanted to try it out

I honestly can't recommend it enough now. Its a little weird feeling the first time you try it, but its very relaxing. I actually prefer it to a massage to be honest, i wake up extremely refreshed and relaxed every time. The first time it took about 15-20 minutes to fall asleep, now its usually less than 5.

What exactly is the mechanism for acupuncture? How does sticking in a few needles help? I appreciate a good massage but would be curious to see how the two stack up.

wow. sounds interesting. i never put much into acupuncture, but impressive if it had anything to do with your non-allergies

You know how every good study that has ever been done has shown acupuncture to be nothing more than an elaborate placebo? Does this bother you?

Another thing I have discovered to drastically decrease my dependence on Claritin-D is biking. Ever since I bought my bike and have been biking at least 40-80miles per week and getting outside more, I haven't needed to use my Claritin-D even though the pollen count has been quite high lately.

Really? A typo? That's what you're going to retort with? You really must be an idiot, which is no surprise if you want to fork over money to an acupuncturist 🙄

I laughed.

Since when is it your concern that I am willing to spend my disposable income on stuff I WANT to spend it on? 🙄

This is even larger evidence of alfa147x being a complete dumbass(Although his other posts rival it).

Acupuncture is nothing more than placebo. You can have a monkey put it in random spots and get the same effect.

WHERE IS YOUR GOD NOW?

Does it bother me? Not a bit. As I said, its relaxing and i can actually enjoy being at my parents house now. Placebo or not, money well spent.

OK just keep in mind that the same quacks who have no respect for science or reality probably don't really give a shit about this alleged "germ theory" thing. I doubt those needles are all that clean.

$65/session is pretty bad considering it doesn't actually do anything.

Actually, even if it does nothing except elicit a powerful placebo effect for the participant, it IS doing something -- namely compelling the body to fix a problem it didn't believe it could fix on its own.

It's certainly walking a fine line, but if people are getting the results they want from acupuncture (even if it does nothing real except provide those results), isn't that a good thing? People get the result they want without becoming dependent on expensive medicines, seeking expensive care, or whatever.

That's not what placebo is. You know nothing. As usual.

They are regulated by the FDA as a medical instrument, sealed in a package, opened in front of me, and disposed of in a medical waste bin (same as any other needle i've ever seen). I've been to regular doctor's offices that are SIGNIFICANTLY less clean than this place. I have no doubt that the needles are clean.

Troll all you want, but my allergies disagree with your opinion. I would much rather $65 treatments that seem to be working, as opposed to $3000 allergy shots.
