i think that u would be hardpressed to tell the difference in the two chips in single cpu games... but u will see a world of difference in supreme commander, and probably any other new games that are coming out...

the single cpu difference between the two chips ghz is only a couple percent, and i believe both have 1mb cache per core...

i went from a 4000 @ 2.8 to a x2 3800 @ 2.5 on this board and see very little decrease in performance in anything, and huge increases in many...

My system finally is running at 250x12 = 3GIG!!! Hooray! My vcore starts at 1.4 and I have 6.6% bump. Also, I have bumpted up nforce4 voltage from 1.5 to 1.55. I think this is what helped! I couldn't hit 3 gigs before. I only put this chip in last week, and never really "burned" it in. It posted at 3.12gig, but it hung up. Back down to 3gig, and I am psyched!

Alright, maybe I will spring for a dually. Maybe Opteron 170. But, I can't help but to think that my money can be utilized better. I received an e-mail from Dell for a C521 system with x2 3800 with 1 gig of ddr2 memory, 160gig hd, cd burner and 19inch lcd analog monitor for $479! Don't you think this is money better spent? I mean considering the monitor to be around $200, I am getting a whole system for $279 (plus taxes on the $479) rather than $188 for just an opteron 170! Is my math wrong? I'm sure someone may say "but you are spending $100 more", but my reply would be that you could not build that system with a licensed windows vista and dell warranty for $100! I don't need another computer, but uh..., this would be way to go, don't you think?

the dell box won't oc... u will be @ 2.0ghz... it will suck for single cpu games compared to your opty...

the analog 19in can be found for $150 or less... is it at least widescreen ?

it would need a vid card, and it has no dvd?

but it is interesting in that u might be able to slap i a cheap oc'able mobo ($75) and it might still be cheaper than buying the parts stand alone...

looked at dell site...
512x2 dimms, dvd rom/cdburner, vista home basic, 1280x1024 monitor (can't even find on site... link goes to better monitor) only adds $60 to price of pc with no monitor...

but it is kind of interesting...

Thanks Cubeless for your input. Couldn't I put the x2 3800 into my current system, if I wanted to and overclock as much as I can? I will take the hit with less cache per core than Opteron, but look what I am getting..., a whole new system with a licensed Windows Vista (although it is only home basic), and a cual core chip! BTW, I have an extra nforce4 board sitting nicely in my closet. I bought an extra one as a spare/backup. I couldn't pass it up, especially since geeks were charging me $37.99 for the second board! This is the link to the Dell deal. Take a close look, then step back and think about what I am saying and give me more great advices. You are absolutely correct about it needing a video card.

So has anyone figured out a quieter way for the NB? The Zalman ZM-NB47J isn't going to work if you have a PCI express video card. Stupid design, they should have moved the NB down about 10mm, then it wouldn't be an issue, or left it in the middle of the mobo where it used to be. There must be a quieter low-profile chipset/VGA-style fan we can use.

I used the Zalman NB47J, since I happened to have one available. I have a long X1800GTO video card, so I had to do three things:

- mount the Zalman at the limit of its adjustibility--fortunately, you've got a lot of flexibility in moving the mounting arms back and forth. As long as the heatsink covers the NF4 chip, it will work fine, even if off-center or angled.

- mount the Zalman so that the two rows of short cooling fins were towards the video card.

- clip 3 or 4 of the short fins off the Zalman--this has very little impact on its cooling capacity.

It's been working fine for three months now.

You know I was looking at that, but unfortunately that thing is about 4.5" high, and I think (not 100% sure but just a guess) in my case it would run right into where my hard drives mount! Not to mention it costs 3x what the Zalman does 🙂

Suck it up big boy! 🙂

I've been fooling with my 165 Opy/Neo4 for awhile now. I can't reach more than 9 x HTT: 285 with a Mulit of 3x with 3.3v bump. I upped the volt's one more time but didn't see any real increase and I was uncomfortable with the temps. Plus, at that setting the memory is still way below ddr400. I was also having an issue with the 133 divider set at auto. Once I manually put in the numbers it worked. So, I decided to try 300x8 = 2400 133 divider = ddr400 Mulit at 3x gave me HT of 900. Cores idle between 28 and 30c. Running prime it will rarely hit 50c on the origional cooler. No where near some records
I've seen but I'm still pleased.

That FX-55 would be a great drop in 😛

The 4000+ at $79 I found was a better bang for buck and nearly comparable. I am running at 2830 with tight memory timings. If I loosened them up and went with a louder fan (I am using a panaflo L1A on a XP120 heatsink) I could hit closer to 3Ghz.

How in the world are you able to run such a high FSB on this board. I couldn't manage to get above about 270Mhz stable at all, even after dropping the CPU and HT multis way down.

Hi, I was having the same trouble. The issue for me was the "auto" memory timings in the bios. I read somewhere on the net this could be an issue. Aparently the bios can at times auto pick the wrong settings when overclocking.

Anyway, I manually put in all the timing settings and it made all the difference in the world. I actually bumped it up to 306 yesterday, it's now at 2449 and no problems. I used "A64 tweeker" to get the setting, did a print screen and just copied them in. Hope that helps.

I run my Opteron 165 at 2.6GHz, 289 HTT, and it's stable. I did try a HTT of 333, but it would not boot no matter how low my CPU was set. The highest I can boot into windows is is 325, giving me a 2.925 GHz, but I don't know if that is stable. Too hot for air cooling to see.

Anyone know if the back plate to the cpu socket is plastic or metal. I really don't feel like taking the board out to check.

Anyway finally overclocked my Opty 165 a little. I dunno what it is but something didn't like the 133 mem divider so I went with the 166 divider. 8.5x294HTT, Running 2.5ghz @ stock voltage. Temps are a little high on the stock cooler so I'm looking to upgrade it in the next week or so.

I tested the board when I first got it with an FX55. I believe the max prime stable HTT I got was 320 and the max stable mem spd was 233mhz.

And this thread keeps on truckin.

I'll probably play with my settings soon again and see how high I can stably jack up my X2 3800

Welcome my friends
To the thread that never ends
It's a hot deal slightly aged
Still warm like a 45-year old babe

Max I got was HTT311 on the 165 and I believe up to 325 on the Venice
