I had thought the X-Finity were the better Ultras. They got good reviews on the web

Well, here's the story on that X-Finity so go grab some coffee and a bag of popcorn.

My case has an easily removable front panel with a front fan filter. After installing the Opty I said, hey let's clean that filter! So I removed it, cleaned the filter and it sometimes takes a little *whop* to get it back on the case. So I give it a good whop (case is not on the floor, it's in a computer cabinet in a desk) and the damn computer shuts off. I own several of these cases so I know what I'm doing when I remove the panel.

Anyways, computer won't turn back on. And no, I didn't hit my computer so hard that it moved. Just a tiny *whop* with your fist is all that's required to get this panel back on. So I remove the side panel and jiggle cables -- no dice. I then lay the computer flat on the floor (processor pointing UP, instead of LEFT) and the computer turns on. I think hmm, so I attempt to move the computer from laying flat to sitting upright. No dice, it dies.

I bring in the 'ol trusty Antec 350w and the computer fires up just fine. On the floor, on it's side, in a box with a fox eating green eggs and ham.

Best thing I can figure out is maybe that *whop* caused something inside the PSU to break (no idea how?! I don't abuse my computer) and short out. Funny how it worked laying down but not sitting up right.

SOOO I phone Ultra. They need a copy of my invoice. Phone Fry's (yes, this was the $10AR X-Finity deal!) and get the invoice faxed. Send that to Ultra. Learn Ultra only has an advance replacement policy in which:

1. They charge me for new PSU, send it out.
2. I get PSU, send the old one back.
3. Hopfully get a credit.

How lame, I asked if I could just send it in and get a new one and he said no -- advance replacement only. Luckily I used my VISA so if I have to dispute charges I can.

So I check my e-mail, ooh an e-mail from Ultra. Wait, they're sending me..... an X-CONNECT?!?!?

Phone Ultra. He said it's already shipped and to decline the package. I say: "I'm not at home when UPS comes, this is NOT my fault. Make it right." He puts me on hold for ten minutes, comes back and says he was able to cancel the shipment and is sending me a new X-Finity.

PITA if you ask me. I can't wait for my $65AR TruePower Trio! The cables may not be shiny and bling bling but damn if this 350w Antec from 1999 powers an OPTERON DUAL CORE machine..... :)

Hopefully your new Antec is good. I have had horrible luck with them as of late...

That's funny. I have one of the Antec Trio coming in too on that Buy.com special. That's depressing. I had read so many good things about the X-finity. I know the X-connect is not so hot. I had thought that with not too many components in my case, like 1 hard drive, 1 dvd burner, 1 7600GT, the 500 watt X-finity would even be overkill even with a overclocked Opteron, I mean,it's not drawing that much more wattage

The Ultras are terrible at keeping the voltages stable - a big issue if you're overclocking.

you are talking about the X-Finity and not the X-Connect? The X-Connect were bad power supplies

they werent bad, just quality control at the time was really bad. I have a 500w X-Connect that I have used to OC many different variations of my main pc. But the ones that slipped out were many and had all sorts of problems including the ones already mentioned.

Here's a 24 hour overclock of my Opty 165 at 2200MHz at stock voltage. Passed without a hitch.

www.kenton.org/msiopty165.JPG

What sucks about the 165 Opty is to overclock and keep your RAM at 200MHz you only have two choices. 2200MHz (166MHz memory divider = CPU Speed / 11) and 2800MHz (133MHz memory divider = CPU Speed / 14)

You also might think my temps are a little high, but I don't believe they are. I'm using an Arctic Freezer 64 Pro w/ stock MX-1 paste. I know the HSF is properly installed because I can see actual heatsink touching the IHS, it's flat and even, so much so it squeezed a little of the MX-1 paste out (Arctic Cooling applied too much?).

But AMD says the maximum temperature is 65C so if I'm lower than 60C at full load on both cores I'll be happy. Something we need to remember, no game stresses both cores 100% and few applications do. I was playing Quake4 the other day and exited the game and the CPU never went above 45C.

Say Mr. Kenton, being that I will have almost the exact same setup as you have, would you mind if we chatted a tad offline? I'll be overclocking as well. I don't intend to tie up your time excessively.
Thanks

No offense, but I'm *really* not a phone person. But, I can offer AIM or e-mail communication. My e-mail is kenton@nospam.kenton.org (remove nospam). My AIM is ScarceHope. I'll install AIM on this machine and sign on and see if you reply.

There's really not too much to tell, though, I:

- Dropped the memory divider to 166MHz (for my 2200MHz overclock, I'm working on 2500MHz now on stock voltage with the 133MHz divider. Equals DDR360)
- Dropped the HTT multiplier from 5x to 4x (for 2200MHz); 3x for anything higher.
- Increased the HTT (bus) speed from 200MHz to 244MHz (244 x 9 = 2196MHz)
- That's all

I will report on how well 2500MHz at stock voltage goes.

Oh, I don't expect phone support unless you sell me some complicated software I can't load.
Thanks

Hey, I'm cool with it. :) I just need to go get a 12 cm fan or two for this case, and I'll be all set to start OC'ing. (Figured better get the cooling solution in place before stressing the system, or I'd have a not so cheap block of fused sand that even a kid doesn't want to play with)

I'll be working on it tomorrow again.

If this Opty doesn't work out, I'm tempted to get the FX-60 for $460 or whatever newegg has it for. I've got a Venice 3200+ (that will do over 2.7GHz on below 55C full load on a 4 pipe AMD OEM heatsink) and a KN1 Lite I can always eBay, along with the Opty.

If I have time tonight I'll post my CPU-Z and SpeedFan measurements during a prime test. I have the 165 at 250HTT still and the temps seem pretty low as I remember. I have a CCBBE 0610DPMW that's supposed to be a good overclocker.

That is a OK price for a FX-60, but for that price range, might be be better to go for one of the Core 2 Duo CPUs and get even better speeds.

Oh, I'm not trying to thread crap either. For 42.00, this is an excellent deal on a 939 board you can overclock on....

I still don't understand my temps. They're not even close to exceeding AMD's maximum temperature by 10-15C, but they are still warm.

As a test last night I shut off all the electronics in this room, including a 27" TV, BASH amplifier (runs hawtttt), Klipsch 5.1x2 setup, no change in temperature. Even got the house down to around 67F and it wasn't too cool.

It's either this computer desk I'm using that's trapping heat in (the back is almost completely cut out, I feel the 120mm exhaust fan and boy is it blowing some air) or my front 120mm is so restricted because of the case and the fan filter. It's times like this I wish I owned a dremel because I can completely eliminate the front intake restriction by taking an unseen piece of plastic out of the bottom of the front panel.

It's very possible too that there's simply too much thermal paste applied from the factory and I need to go back and clean it with 99% Alcky and apply a dot of AS5.

Anyways, for the people who care, Opteron 165 @ 2500MHz stable for 14 hours on stock voltage

(Settings: HTT Speed: 278, HTT Multi: 3x, RAM Divider: 133MHz (actual clock speed is 178MHz or DDR356), Stock voltage and default 9x multiplier)

maybe a bad sensor. Do you have another socket 939 CPU you can drop into it?
My main rig sits in a room that can be 80 degrees F, and my dual core idles in the low 30s C. How about mounting the stock HSF? The stock paste on the Freezer Pro has good reviews.

Another geezer that got the MSI up and running, and got my A64 3400 running @ 2.5ghz.

One problem: my Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro won't register it's fan speed anywhere. Speedfan, Core Center, etc. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

Is it a 2 terminal wire on the freezer pro? I think it requires the 3 terminal. Maybe I'm completely wrong about this......

No, F64Pro has 4 actual wires -- one doesn't plug in, I suspect this is the RPM wire replaced by the PWM wire, and I cannot get a CPU fan RPM reading, either.

No, it's not a bad sensor on my board, as the temp comes directly from the die. Anyways, below 60C and I'll be happy. It'll never peak 50 during a game anyways, only when Priming.

Yes, I have a 3400+ 939 processor, it's good up to around 2.6GHz at 1.6v and hits similar temps to my Opty at stock volts...

You know, I kept thinking the temp is taken at the motherboard level for the CPU, I forgot the CPU has a built in sensor. I wonder how much better the freezer pro is compared to the AMD heatpipe on overclocked CPUs

There are some reviews out there. The two copper pipe cooler with the 70mm fan is somewhere near the xp-90 for cooling, the the 4 pipe 80mm fan one is supposed to better. So if you can find a review comparing it to the Thermalright XP-90, you should be set...

Well, when running Prime95 for hours, my 3400 @ 2.5ghz never went over 45c. So I am happy as a clam. Went from an XP2600 on an old ECS mb, to this, so I increased my perfromance tremendously....:)

Kenton, what does PMW stand for? Any way to re-wire the connector to get a fan speed reading? (Yes, I believe it is 4 wire).

Picked up an FX-55 San Diego with the Seagate SATA 250gb hard disk combo deal for $200 on Newegg. Also ordered the G.Skill DDR400 dual channel kit for $210. Now I'm just waiting for a good deal on a video card and I can put this thing together. I'm gonna try out that Kingwin HSF and see how it works. It's a nice big all copper cooler so I think it'll do the job if I upgrade the fan on it. Will just have to set the temperature shut down in the bios and monitor the temps for a while to make sure I'm not cooking it.
