A very few people in this world would prefer to squat over a hole out back than to have indoor plumbing. :D

Your toilet gets clogged every once and a while, but overall it's better than the alternatives for most people.

Window's isn't without it's problems, but for a majority of users it's better than most alternatives.

Thank you, I use Windows and probably always will. Linux is just not ready for the desktop market. I still like seeing MS getting owned. :)

Lindows seriously needs to stop being a little crybaby and just make products that are better than windows.

I probably shouldn't knock it till I've tried it, but uh huh. Window's learning curve is a lot easier than most OS's for the everyday user...

And for the power users, Windows is everywhere due to the everyday user, so it all makes sense.

it appears that way

Yes, in America, you cannot put a trademark, copyright, or claim ownership on any word in the English language. (or at least one in the Dictionary)

What about words like Lucent and Oracle?

I got to thinking about things like that after I posted that... I'm not 100% sure, but my understanding is that they can use the name, but not claim any sort of ownership of it. They couldn't sue another company using the same name applied differently, because they can't put a trademark on a single word (that's the Dictionary). They could use a word combined with another word and copyright the phrase (I believe), like "Lucent Technologies", "Apple Computers", or "Apple Records".... Neither the Beatles or "Apple Computers" would own the word Apple, but has exclusive rights to "Apple Computers" or "Apple Records". If I started "Happle Records" I don't think there is nothing that Apple Records could do about it.... Had Microsoft trademarked "Windows Software" or something like that, it still wouldn't have helped them. Like I say I could be 400% wrong here...

maybe the U.S. Copyright office website??
link to the sba.gov document on trademarking a name

All MS haters can go to hell.
Gentoo > Windows > Lindows

For that 1% of the population that is trained on linux, yes.
For the rest of the population that was raised on Windows and it "just works" for them because that's what they know how to use, then no.

I'm all for Linux/OSS taking over, I'm even trying to convert myself over to it. Until I can install it on my computer and have my roomates and other people that use my computer even remotely know how to use it when sitting down at it, I will still always choose Windows. In most cases, it's worth the additional 1-2 crashes a month that Windows does over Linux in order to stay compatible and work for everyone that doesn't want to go to class again just to use a computer.

I understood the crashing argument before windows xp, but in three years of running xp i had exactlly 0 bs of d. MS haters are just pointless, but im all for linux because compitition drove MS to get a os that doesnt crash (XP). Furthermore ms os systems arent just renamed after a couple years later and resold, they are actually improved heavily. Face it windows is here to stay as the dominate os for the next decade or longer.

Agree with jelly 100%. I VERY BRIEFLY played with Linux in 99 because I had had it up to here (picture of the top of my head) with windows 98. But then windows 2000 came out, and I've not looked at Linux since. I won't until it makes WILD gains against MS, and I find that unfreaking likely, since MS has billions behind it and already a far superior OS for me and the vast majority of the population. For all intents and purposes 2000/XP do not crash. Unlike Linux they are infinitely more user friendly and have infinitely more support for both hardware and software. Linux is good only insofar as it mildly encourages MS to be more competitive.

And, for the record, out of the several companies I've worked at (big and small) all of them have used windows as both dsektop AND server operating systems. Linux has its place, but it won't be in my computer any time soon.

Oh BTW I've been reading for at least half a decade how Linux is going to kill Windows. I almost believed it at one point. Haha!

John Dvorak was right on target when he said back at the beginning of the Microsoft action against Lindows that it was one of the dumbest things Microsoft could do. The term "Windows" can be seen as very generic. The smart thing for Microsoft to have done in my opinion is take the Intel route and devise a new acronym to describe their OS families.

I'm perfectly fine with Windows, but that doesn't excuse MS of underhanded practices they're well known for.

Damn with the EU fine and this it doesn't look rosy for my MSFT stock. Sad thing is so many people are cheering this. I'll never understand.

They(Lindows) dont have a chance. This is a last ditch effort.

Yeah most trademarks are common words in the English language. Theres not a judge in the US that will rule in favor of Lindows on this case.
