MS E3 Press Conference Wrapup Thread

Queasy

MS wrapped up their show with a megaton surprise announcement that FFXIII is coming to the 360 the same day as the PS3 version in both North America and Europe. HUGE

The rest of press conference showed off the sexah new 360 interface that will support Avatars, Group Chat with up to 8 friends that allows you to all party together to play games, Netflix support that also allows you to watch the same TV show or movie with your friends/party, and a crap ton of casual games.

There were a few hardcore games like GoW2, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5, etc. But MS's focus this time was definitely on the casual set as they showed of 1 vs 100 (a primetime gameshow game), a new Scene-It, Lips, and more.

What didn't show up? A Wii-mote version of the 360 controller.

Netflix Partners with MS

Neflix is Microsoft's new media partner. Users will be able to watch the entirety of Netflix's film library directly from their Xbox 360s, and movies and TV shows can be shared with the avatar-based community called Live Party, just announced earlier this morning.

Microsoft's John Schappert said that there would be no additional cost imposed on the Netflix service beyond the regular Netflix subscription costs.

Avatars + New Interface

Microsoft's John Schappert took the stage today at Microsoft's E3 2008 press conference to reveal the new face of Xbox Live. Coming this Fall, your gamer tag will now be linked to an avatar, designed by the folks at Rare, who will then be customizable with any of thousands of pieces of clothing, accessories, etc., all available via Xbox Live Marketplace. What a surprise!

The avatars, much like Miis, will be playable in many upcoming Microsoft games, including Uno on Xbox Live and the new Scene-It!: Box Office Smash.

There's also a new community channel called Live Party, where you can add up to 8 friends to chat and share content, such as photos.

Resident Evil 5 comes out on Friday the 13th, March 2009

Guitar Hero: World Tour
Red Octane founder Kai Huang took the stage today at Microsoft's E3 2008 presser to toss out a few pertinent Guitar Hero related tidbits. First up, REM DLC is coming, and Xbox 360 owners will get first shot at it when it drops. Then Huang revealed that Van Halen and The Eagles will be completely exclusive to Guitar Hero: World Tour. No Hot For Teacher for Rock Band? Not fair.

Finally, Metallica is coming to Guitar Hero in a big way, with DLC being readied to release alongside their new album, Death Magnetic, which is guaranteed to completely make up for Saint Sinner...as if any album could actually contain such power.

Pics of the new interface from Engadget - Like I said, looks very similar to the upcoming Media Center Interface for Vista.

Did it really need to though? Especially with the release of the demo today?

We got a demo for Too Human, which I'm looking to try purely out of morbid curiosity. I was never interested in the game seeing the crappy videos, but want to see if it can change my opinion.

I'm shocked NO ONE leaked the FF13 on 360 thing.

Actually, there was one other big thing that didn't show up. A Bungie announcement.

More on the new interface stuff

Dear Xbox LIVE Member,

When we launched Xbox 360 in November 2005, Xbox LIVE was integrated directly into the console. Back then, Xbox 360 was the first system to deliver access to experiences beyond just the disc in the tray. With the Xbox guide and dashboard you had access to everything on your console as well as your community.

We also imagined that Xbox experience would continuously improve over time, through the power of software.

Since launch, you?ve always pushed us to continuously innovate. It is because you spoke with one loud voice that we added new features like background downloading, 1080p support, movies and TV shows, video chat, a Marketplace blade and instant messaging.

Over time, as we?ve delivered more and more content into the Xbox LIVE Marketplace, we?ve heard from many of you that it has become increasingly difficult to find the games and content you want.

And that brings us to today.

Because of your feedback, we started rethinking the entire Xbox experience. What we discovered was that we could not only provide a better experience for you, but also something that reaches out to new audiences.

What John Schappert unveiled for the world on stage at E3 was just a sneak preview, so I wanted to share some deeper details on some of the new features in the new Xbox experience.

Here is a look at some additional features you will find interesting:

* Play from hard drive. Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive. Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well. Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.

* Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web. Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console. Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.

* Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it?s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

* LIVE Party system. Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos. It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games. LIVE Party allows up to eight people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.

* Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends. Games will support everything you?d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes. You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show. Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions. Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.

* Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars. You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community. Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.

* New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

This is only the beginning. Over the next few months, we will share more details on the upcoming changes.

See you online,

Marc Whitten

LOL. "You steal Square Enix from us we take your Bungie!"

While it's a smart business move for SE, I have to wonder if FF13 would have been multiplatform if MS didn't have billions of dollars to wave around to entice them. There's been a few instances in the past where MS's money from it's other departments has helped their console(s) stay afloat.

Queasy! Thanks for wrapping up all the info for us. With most gaming sites blocked for me and a lot of other gmaing forums just running too slow to visit--I definitely apprciated the effort.

Or it could be that FFXIII cost so much to produce that Square had to release the game on other systems to make their money back and show a profit...

E3 for MS was all about the games last year. This year they are focusing more on infrastructure.

I like it a lot.

FFXIII is cool, I guess - the PS3 stock tanked today on the SimExchange (down 50% - I got in early with a short for a solid 25% profit so far). Looks like Square likes money.

Easy. Look at the sales of the consoles. The more copies of the game SE can ship, the more money they make. Simple as that. They probably just doubled or tripled the number of people that will buy the game.

Yep, just look at the sales for COD4 and GTAIV.

Broaden your consumer base. Increase your sales.

Bungie Announcement Incoming?

Seems like we're inching closer to that July 14th announcement Bungie is supposed to make today. Bungie.net has been updated with a new countdown, which refreshes with a new message:

* Keep it clean
* Please remain calm
* Services will resume
* No public access
* Emergency lights active
* Proceed with caution

What will it be? Halo Blue? A XBLA game? Or something entirely different?

Yeah, exclusive third party games just don't make much sense anymore with game budgets being as big as they are. I'm still surprised to hear this though.

like most bungie announcements, i don't expect this to be anything exciting heh.

ah oh well...i understand square-enix's decision..think about ff11 (only had a limited amount of ps2 and pc users, but im sure they expanded quite a bit with the 360 version).

at least it'll still be on the ps3.

While money wise, I understand it the switch, loyalty wise I give a big double middle finger to SE.

What? I don't get this comment. If the game is coming out on the PS3 and the X360--why would this piss you off so much?

If the game is going to be on multiple systems, the chances of its success are increased. Wouldn't this be something you would want as a fan of the series? 😕

RE:5 Co-op

As you may have just heard, Resident Evil 5 is getting an online co-op mode. The video, which you can check out after the break, starts off with Chris Redfield going through the African village. Chris gets to a point in the level where he can't get through by himself. So at this point, the online co-op mode is revealed introducing the new girl, Sheva Alomar, as a playable character.

Sheva makes her way to Chris and with his help, she crosses over to an adjacent building and continues on with the level. Sheva runs into some enemies and as she's taking them on, Chris is sniping them from his position. Sheva then makes her way to a blocked door that she unlocks to let Chris through. The video presentation ends with a new variation of the Chainsaw mini-boss from Resident Evil 4.

Hit the jump for the video and some questions on the co-op mode.
