"Music choice" is on the HDD of the desktop or laptop PC, which can be accessed at least daily. Spending that much to cart everything around is ludicrous, unless you can't get back to the PC for days or weeks.

IPOD!!!! Why the hell would you buy anything else.
Features, sound quality, price, the right to freely manipulate music you own, free choice in collection management software, ogg and/or flac support, battery life... But "teh ipod iz kewl!!11!1oneoneone" In high school maybe... btw, when do you take the class which teaches you where question marks go? 😉
:fire;
1. Features - you mean stuff that I don't need? Voice recording is nice, but a novelty for me. I do wish I had an FM reciever for npr in general, market, and "all things considered,"
2. Sound Quality - yes.you are right. however, I choose to listen to QUALITY AUDIO through my stereo. ...and yes most of my music is in lossless and is as such when I put it on my pod unless I am patient and use anapod to transcode it. Lossless vs 320kbps mp3s don't make a difference when I am pedaling my ass of on my bike in the middle of the woods or listening to it in my car. You need Shur's to tell the difference.
3. ogg and/or flac support - I see nothing wrong with mp3, mp4 and Apple Lossless support. Using dbpower amp I successfuly converted all of my wma lossless to apple lossless withut a hitch and vice versa for sharing my lossless file samples by converting my mp4 lossless to wma lossless.....not a big deal. Oh, and don't bother telling me flac is better than apple lossless. It probably is, but once again, you probably won't be able to appreciate except if you are in a quiet room with shure e'x on. That, and wma lossless can go to 96/192....as if it matters....😛
4. battery life - you win. I have no quams here. Personally I don't require 24 hours of battery life, but I could see where it would be useful.
5. right to freely manipulate music you own - ?! - if yo uare talking about copy protection, that issue is somewhat universally applicable to all copy-protected material
6. free choice in collection management software - Yes. And much of it is complete crap. I'll admit that a few are quite good, but itunes and anapod have kept me happy.
If you don't want sound quality or features, why not buy a 40gb budget player in the low $200s instead of Apple's $300 for 20gb, $400 for 40? Reencoding files is unnecessary extra work for the sake of "thinking different" and the iPod is the only player about which I've heard horror stories of losing everything on the device thanks to protection features. Whether you like iTunes or not is beside the point, you have no real choice with an iPod, unless you want to use unsupported 3rd party software. Even then you only have a slightly larger choice. God forbid you be able to do it with a file manager...

hey man, if you're happy w/ your ipod, that's cool. i owned a 3rd gen 20g ipod and an ipod mini. i was like you, i felt that i didn't need the extra bells and whistles because i didn't know any better. but now i realize that i was compromising in many respects when i went w/ the ipod. it's kinda like sex, you don't really know what you're missing until you try it.Originally posted by: Goosemaster
Compromise? Compromise if everything ever concieved is a necessity for all, but it is not a necessity for me. The only compromise I see is battery life, and for me, that hasn't reared its ugly face.
I bought it for what it can do, not what it cannot.
By that notion my Epson c80 is garbage.....my Dad needed a ncie label printer, it did waht he needed, and I bought it. Perhaps Canon's have more features with LCDs and more inks, but he couldnt;t be happier.
So it seems as if you were satisfyied with the ipod until you no longer had it......go figure.....

In a similar vein, maybe some people "need" to own the exact same technology as their peers, no matter how overpriced or inferior it may be!

Going to go with the majority here (as far as hdd vs. flash)...

This whole topic exists because the OP's HDD took a sh|t, so any viable alternative to that same fate is what I'd consider damn useful! To save a buttload of money, battery up time and far smaller form factor is just icing on the cake!

I'll stand behind everything I DID say, though. Too much money for too little return, and more so when comparing an iPod to other HDD based competition.Originally posted by: Ornery
I didn't get too screwed on it.....
So far you're out over $500.00 to Apple just to play MP3s...

What's the difference between that and the Muvo TX FM 256?Another favorite is the Creative Labs NOMAD MuVo

You squawk about having to swap music, which should be an ULTRA-EASY, eyes blindfolded task, with such an intuative interface, but how often do you have to charge it? And, at what total price? The OP had the problem and posted, or I wouldn't have said a word!
