Skoorb, that is the first first-hand detail I have seen of such a thing, although I know it happens. Are you banned by Mexico from returning as part of the release agreement?
Not that you'd ever WANT to go back ofter that................
My storytelling is getting better and better

I'm just being a pest, carry on :p

LOL, I was actually starting to believe it.

Having just returned from Cancun a few weeks ago, I don't how anyone with English as their first language would have any problems finding work in the tourist regions. Granted, that might be too much of a "drunk college orgy" 24/7 as others have mentioned, though.

Most of my friends have been really supportive or cool with it. They know how I am in life and so this isn't something that would shock them. My friend's mother said the world couldn't handle another Mill, and she wasn't meaning in a bad way.

I won't lie -- I just told my mother and she's pissed. She thinks I threw away a good job and then gave me a list of a million things that could go wrong and/or things I need to do, etc. That pissed me off because I'm cognizant of all of that and I realize I have obligations here that I have to take care of first hence the reason I plan to check it out and even see if I like the place to begin with. I'm not foolhardy and impulsive enough to just do something without thinking it through and not planning it first. If I like Mexico enough, then I'll certainly make plans and get everything in order here in the US before just "rushing" off. I guess that her way of being a mother, when what I really want is support.

My boss was very supportive. He said to go do it and have fun and that he wished he have done that when he was younger. He's slightly disappointed, but at the same time he's entirely understanding and isn't mad at me personally (we are close friends as well).

We will see how everything goes...

Umm, blow me? It has nothing to do with the US or Alabama -- it has to do with me wanting to get away for awhile.

Anyway, I'm staying at "Dreams" or something like that in Cancun and I decided to take Continental rather than Aero Mexico. It was about 300 bucks more, but I get to fly out of BHM instead of driving to ATL. Sucks that it connects in Houston but oh well still not too bad of a flight.

It may come as a surprise, but not everyone is a disgruntled hippie like yourself. :)

I did not do this as my wife is not as adventurous as me, but here is my suggestion:
Get off the plane and head south on the bus. After you get about 50 miles south, things start to get nice. Go looking for a beach bungelow from a private party, somebody that only has a few. Negotiate a long term rental.
Go to internet cafe' and let select friends know how to get a hold of you. They come visit, pay the rent, hang out. Not exactly profit, but good times:)
I have talked to folks who have done that. Don't expect phone or TV, or maybe even AC. It is still pretty nice along the beach though without it.
You speak Spanish?

You know that doesn't sound all that bad. The one trepidation I do have is that I do NOT speak Spanish. I speak German at a marginal level and of course English, so I'd have to learn. I took to German like a duck to water, so I figure hearing Spanish 24/7 I'll learn it quick enough. The only Spanish I know is from being in Spain for a week and having a Columbian roommate.

Colombian!

Costa Rica is cheaper, safer, friendlier, and cleaner. Ohh ya, the waves kick ass.

naaa, if the mexicans think they can illegally come to america and not learn english, why not do the same to them?

Because we're better than they are and will not lower ourselves to their level to spite them.

playa del carmen used to be good, but is touristy now. give it a try though. Cozumel Island is by far the coolest, but more pricey. If I could find something to do there, I'd be gone. the scuba and snorkel there was awesome!

cough cough, please pm me if you do this, I'll come help pay the bills for a week or so this fall :)

Also, IIRC, you have to leave your guns at home :(

You can have that place!

Wal-Mart grows all of it's bags there....you can see all the bag trees when you cross the border! :D

I don't know about southern Mexico, but northern Mexico is a dump! Of course, South Texas is really northern Mexico, as far as that goes so you could just move there.

Of course we have automatic sticks (what do you think women drive ;) )and high speed internet and bottled water and Star Wars Episode III released the same day as in the US, in case you were wondering.

To the original poster: I live in Mexico city, PM if you have any questions about my country and I'll be glad to try to help
