It's nice that you wrote a nice clean letter, but you shouldn't ask that the "two or four week notice" bet waived. It's not like they can do jack crap about it. You're leaving your job? Great. Bye bye. :p

BTW, Mill, have you ever been to Oregon?

Just an act of consideration, I realize that no matter what it isn't fair to resign on such notice.

Dude, you aren't worth the sh|t that's stuck to the bottom of Mill's shoe. Don't insult Mill. If he leaves, AT will be taking a loss. You, on the other hand, can dodge the door on your way out.

I have never lived there, mill, but have been going since 1980. the mayan coast south of cancun is cool. Cancun is like Ft. Lauderdale on spring break, 24/7/365. I hate it, but just a few KM's south is OK:)
Just going to live off nest egg for a while, or planning to work?

I don't know what the work situation is for expats down there, but I'm not making this a permanent life thing -- just for about a year or so. I'd like to work down there, but again I don't know what the expat situation is down there. Perhaps it is better in other areas than a resort town like Cancun? That's part of the reason I'd like to get a hold of that bastard jjones. :p

I did not do this as my wife is not as adventurous as me, but here is my suggestion:
Get off the plane and head south on the bus. After you get about 50 miles south, things start to get nice. Go looking for a beach bungelow from a private party, somebody that only has a few. Negotiate a long term rental.
Go to internet cafe' and let select friends know how to get a hold of you. They come visit, pay the rent, hang out. Not exactly profit, but good times:)
I have talked to folks who have done that. Don't expect phone or TV, or maybe even AC. It is still pretty nice along the beach though without it.
You speak Spanish?

EDIT:

link to map section in question
playa del carmen used to be good, but is touristy now. give it a try though. Cozumel Island is by far the coolest, but more pricey. If I could find something to do there, I'd be gone. the scuba and snorkel there was awesome!

You know that doesn't sound all that bad. The one trepidation I do have is that I do NOT speak Spanish. I speak German at a marginal level and of course English, so I'd have to learn. I took to German like a duck to water, so I figure hearing Spanish 24/7 I'll learn it quick enough. The only Spanish I know is from being in Spain for a week and having a Columbian roommate.

Mill,
If you're for real, then congrats! :D Not to overdramatize it, but that's a great life decision. I'm sure you've done some soul searching to reach this conclusion and you'll be the happier for it--waaay happier.

Outside of the US, many Europeans, Australians (vs cowardly Americans) do the same thing. They want to leave their dreary lives behind and have at it with adventure and experience. To my knowledge, everyone of them has accomplished their goals.

Now, in Cancun, you'll find it to be like Miami in the sense that everyone is bilingual--you prolly know this by now. Cancun lives off tourism. Hotels seek local cheap labor, unless you have hotelling experience for a better position or you can seek other tourist work. You can also teach English. If you leave Cancun area, you'll need to learn basic Spanish to get by.

You'll find a lot of English speakers in Cancun environs to hook a job with. Go to the Consulate, Expat Clubs for establishing a network....

(Btw, if I wasn't gainfully employed and had my MINIMUM 4 weeks vacation and was only living paycheck to paycheck, I'd also would get the fVck out of Dodge and go work in some tropical place as well. Life is too short to waste away not enjoying life. There's a reason why 97% of workers have mid-life crises--which could easily be avoided...if they just knew better.....)

Yeah I saw how Playa Del Carmen had a couple of resorts now when I was seaching around Cancun. Is Cozumel not resort heavy? Either way, I'll be looking into both and I appreciate the help.

I was in Mexico from 1996-1998. I worked on a resort for 6 weeks at the beginning. It was pretty fun. Money wasn't great, but room and board was payed for and I basically just worked at a restaurant 6 days/week and spent the evenings--almost all of them--getting rather drunk. This is why I don't care for corona much anymore, as I really got my fill of it. Same reason I don't much like Mexican women anymore.

I will never go back to Mexico. The last 19 months of it were spent in prison in Matamoros for supposed drug smuggling. I was a waiter, but sometimes I'd do clean up duty after dinner on Saturdays, when I had to stay late (we all did on Saturdays). One day I was throwing out the trash and was stopped by two officers of the policia federal. They searched some of the bags I'd been throwing away and found two kilograms of cocaine. Apparently somebody from the restaurant had been moving it in this manner, and somebody would pick it up later. I was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison.

The Canadian consolate down there had faith in my innocence and helped me through. 19 months later I was freed. Countries like Mexico are fun to visit, but their justice system is a fvcking farce, and I would recommend people to stay on the resorts. Stay as far away from the local authorities as possible.

Anyway, good luck.

Thank you sir! I've heard that Cancun has several theme and/or water parks. I've got experience in that area, so that's a definite possability.

How hard is it to stay in Mexico re: Immigration, etc? I'm fairly worried about Citizenship stuff and visas -- I don't want to do this in a stupid or rash way.

Cozumel has a completely different atmosphere. Time slows down when you get off the boat or plane. It is more laid back, a taste of the Carribean Islands to the east.
Cruise ships dock at the port many days of the week, but if you set up shop somehwere away from the central district you'd hardly notice.
The reef is just offshore to the south, and continues more or less across all of Belize. I made my first scuba dives there, and snorkeled every day.
Are you flying on Continental out of Houston? we were able to change to a direct flight to the island at the last minute. That was cool.

Skoorb, that is the first first-hand detail I have seen of such a thing, although I know it happens. Are you banned by Mexico from returning as part of the release agreement?
Not that you'd ever WANT to go back ofter that................

I'm taking Aero Mexico out of Atlanta. A friend is actually going with me for right now, and the only way to get a free Comp ticket was to book First/Business Class through Aero Mexico. In the end it costs a bit more than two coach tickets, but the Amex Plat 2 for 1 makes it a hell of a deal. I'm still trying to decide on a resort or place to stay at. I've looked at some great ones like Dreams, but I sort of thought about something out of Cancun toward Playa Del Carmen as well or Cozumel like we were talking about.

Good plan. A day or two in Cancun is plenty IMO. Sr. Frog's, hard Rock Cafe, drunken teens and loud music, bah!
