The Sony Ericsson s710a will be out next month.
Can you say holygrail of cell phones?

Different purposes...this MPx220 is supposed to compete with the likes of PalmOne Treo series...pda replacement of the sort.

Treo > MPX 200/220

w0rd.

Love my Treo 600.

Unfortunately now I want to change my plan, but in order to do that I must switch to Cingular. This wouldn't be so bad except I bought a Motorola V600 when I signed up. Now if I want to swithc plans I also have to buy a new phone which really stinks, and they wont reveal the unlock code of my phone to me those nazis, let alone help me period until I switch over.

You can still upgrade to another AT&T plan. Just hang up and keep calling 611 and eventually a rep will be nice enough to do it for you. This goes for all existing AWS features like mMode and SMS.

I have an MPX220 and for me it works great. It works just like a decent phone. And, it syncs with my office PC so that my calendar, contacts, tasks are transferred to my phone. It reduces my load from a phone and a PDA to just one item: a smartphone. I like the clamshell, too, that protects the screen. The camera is an extra that I only use as a last resort. But it does produce photos. I do not use its email/web features and do not plan on doing so. If you want an email smartphone, try a Blackberry (or a Treo 650).

Enjoy this deal.

You sound like you work for one of the companys, not very many ppl on the outside use or even know what AWS means?

So now I'm wondering if Cingular will price match because I will print out that webpage and take it in and demand they give me that phone for free. Oh and BTW, if you are with ATT and choose to switch to CIngular they will give you the discounts on phones they give to new members, so is my understanding. I would just try and unlock my phone, but this shouldn't be my responsibility. Cingular should handle this itself.

Even though your post does not directly relate to the original topic, I think your points should be addressed to clear things up for ppl who would otherwise ignore a good deal on a phone based on your bad experience. This is not meant as a flame, I only intend to make an explanation to your points.

1. You signed up for ATT a couple months before the buyout (it definately was not a merger), knowing that it was going to happen, and you went with the company that was being bought? Whoever told you that was a good idea should be shot. While trade regulations do not allow buyout intentions to be announced prior to close, leaks do occur and this was the biggest buyout in american history, so pretty much everyone knew about it. So you made a bad decision there, its ok, you win some you lose some.

2. This is definately not your fault and i will tell you that you are certainly supposed to be able to change your plan, it does make a difference who you talk to though. Remember these are still largely two seperate companies, just ran under the same BOD. You need to make sure you get ahold of a rep in a call center that was ATT pre-buyout. This # is your best bet 1-800-888-7600. (yeah ATTs system you have to talk to the computer, just say customer service)

3. I was under the impression that motorola would have been the one to have that lock code? Also, where would you enter it? I would think that the phone would have to be physically connected to a machine to be reprogrammed, sort of like a firmware upgrade on the non gsm phones.

4. Cingular wont price match, not to another store, a wrong printed price, an e-store, nothing, they are not bestbuy and do not have a price matching policy. 4a. Please dont demand things, it makes you look childish and the ppl will be more helpful if you treat them as you would like to be treated. Remember, they work there, cingular and att are public traded companies, meaning they are owned and governed by the ppl who own their stock, so if you are gonna point fingers you are gonna need a lot of them.

5. You are correct that you will get the same discounts as any other customer when switching over, it ist always the best scenario for a customer such as yourself to replace their current phone, but it is better than 24,000,000 ppl storming the cingular gates "demanding" to have their phones reprogrammed.

It mostly goes back to that they are not and can not force you to switch, that is why I try to make it very clear in point 2 that you must be able to switch your plan with ATT. If after calling that number you still cannot get your plan changed PM me and I will put you in touch with someone who I know will be able to help. Remember though, you will be offered ATT rate plans, same ones they had pre buyout, not cingular rate plans. But if you had wanted a cingular plan, you would have just signed up for cingular originally right?

Cingular has the unlock code, the first release of the mpx220 was unlocked, but the current 1.3 firmware locks it. You can get the unlock code from cingular if you play your cards right. 😉 When a phone is locked and you put in a sim from another carrier it will ask you for the unlock code.

He wants to unlock his ATT V600, not the MPX220. I dont think cingular would have that.

Back to topic this is a hot deal no matter how you slice it, it is a phone that is normally $250 AFTER rebates for free, that is sizzling. 😎

It is the software that locks it, not the hardware. If you called up moto for an unlock code..they would just laugh. I agree, this is a HOT deal.

I'm guessing the "port your existing number" option lets you do it once you actually recieve the phone? I clicked ok but nothing further about it came up...

Still wondering about this... I clicked the option before I bought it, but it didn't say anything else. Do they just include the paperwork/instructions with your phone on how to do this? I've never actually transferred a number before, so I have no clue how it works...

Also, since the phone has bluetooth, does it let you transfer stuff to the phone via bluetooth? I sure as hell hope so, but I don't know how fast the throughput on BT is... My laptop has onboard BT, so it would be cool as hell to use that without plugging in a usb wire.

You had an opportunity to opt out and have your contract canceled within 90-days of the merger. They notified you in your bills for the 3 months after the merger, although it was in the fine-print.

I have had this phone for a few months now and Its not too bad. Some times its a bit tough to hear the caller on the other end, but I found that is usually due to how i have it positioned by my ear. Anyhow I bought the motorola bluetooth headset which I use more often then the regular handset, and with the blutooth headset everything sounds crystal clear, so no complaints.

Down side of course is that the camera is terrible in anything but the brightest conditions, and the flash is more of a gimmik then an actualy functional piece of hardware, I have a feeling its not even timed correctly with the shutter, since all low light pictures look the same regardless of flash. But if you wanted a good digital camera, you would have bought a good digital camera.

On a side note (and it may have been mentioned before) I don't think this phone is concidered a "PDA Phone" It does not have the full functionality that a PDA has. Nice features are that it syncs up with outlook, and you can check your web based email. All in all, I like the phone.

Sorry for the lack of replies but I just finished my new Athlon 64 system and got it up and running on the net again. Rokfan as it seems to have pointed out, you can indeed get a discount on your equipment if you migrate to Cingular, however I am not sure how it works if you activate through an agent (ie Bestbuy or Buy.com). If you werent attached to your existing phone number, you could cancel that line and activate new service with a new MDN. Schaung, the problem you are having is a known issue with the 220. The newest firmware seems to have fixed all the hearing issues with the phone.

Ooh! no way! Where can you get the firmware?

My MPX220 (brough directly from Cingular) does come with the latest firmware that does fix all of the previous technical operating problems. Camera if for emergency use only of course.

couldn't hold back, got the phone since I have ATT and i wanted to upgrade to a cingular plan but they told me i would have to get rid of my beloved nokia 3620...hopefully it all goes well and my rebates come in quickly

I'm still waiting on this phone. I orders 1/20 (3 weeks ago) and the site says "Sent to Warehouse." How long did it take for you all to get your phones? I've been calling Buy.com but it's been an exercise in frustration so far.

Taoduh

Anyone know if you can get a phone from buy.com and add it to a family plan you already have? They don't have something like that in their plan options.

my phone arrived the on the 2nd day using two day shipping. Activated and even though they didn't port my number or add my features but I call buy.com and cingular and got it all straightened out. Also, i switched from AT&T for those of you that are wondering if it'll work. I verified with buy.com three seperate times to make sure that wouldn't affect the rebates. My contract with AT&T had expired though so I think that's why I was able to do it.

Yeah I know. That sucks. It's gonna be sitting on my desk for the next 6 months hoping not to lose it or magically spill something on it.
