Most tragic characters in games. (Feel bad for killing or not saving)

I was playing though Drakensang and there is this cultist girl that I had to put down. She was totally brainwashed and she gave up her mind, body and soul for her cult. Now she give up her life too. I killed all her minions first, hoping she would surrender. Nope she decided to fight to the death. I feel pretty bad killing her. :'(

So that got me thinking: What are some of the most tragic characters in games? Those that makes you feel bad for killing them. And also those that makes you feel bad for unable to save them.

One of such characters for me are those Big Sisters from Bioshock 2. They are all covered up so they had been dehumanized. And when you meet them they are nothing but monsters.

But that doesn't change the fact of what they are: Little Sisters that have grown up. They were the same as those little girls that I saved in Bioshock 1. They were brain washed since childhood and had turn into merciless killing machines to collect Adams and fight for a certain sinister individual. They kidnapped children around the globe without question. They were a total tool and they never realize what is happening, not even on the day they died. I feel pretty bad killing them for that.

Not to mention that I was saving Little Sisters on one hand, and killing Big Sister on the other, when they are one and the same thing. Now I feel bad killing Big Daddies too. But I don't see little boys running around. Big Sister is worst because when you see them, that means you just saved a Little Sister 10 seconds ago. 😱

So what are some tragic characters you guys encountered in games?

Man, this thread is going to be a haven for spoilers.

In BG2, I say
yojimbo (or whatever that thief's name was)

The lead character in Soulbringer was a tragic hero. Still my favorite story ever in gaming.

In Mass Effect would you consider
Benezi
a tragic character?

lol you should really warn about that or spoiler it. I know it's hard to believe, but there have to be some gamers out there that don't know about her yet.

yeah, but you don't have to kill her.

and only uber nerds call her Aerith. It's Aeris in the US version--the only one that anyone in the western hemisphere plays because, well, it was actually released here.

Good topic. I find I choose not to play games that have your char do wrong generally.

In some cases it's tough though. Think of Deus Ex - you face some evil people, but a lot of the "enemies" are just regular guys. I've tried to play without killing but I'm not skilled enough. I don't get very far.

I was playing though Drakensang...

I'm going to suggest, starting with you, that spoiler tags be used.

I have the drakensang rivers of time game and haven't played it yet, and don't need to have it ruined when I do.

It's not that hard to make the specific spoilers use tags.

I played Final Fantasy:Crisis Core this Summer and I could have sworn she was
Aerith
.

That's a hell of a game, by the way, with a story that really grows on you and one of the most tragic characters ever imo.

Done. 😉

As for the spelling, that's how the anime/J-RPG community has written her name so nothing wrong or nerdy about it.

The
player character
at the end of Freespace 2.

Alistair
in Dragon Age, especially when you see him again in the sequel.

There's some real tough moral choices in Dragon Age Origins that lead to these kind of situations, I won't spoil anything but it's a fantastic game.

yeah that's one of the things that made the game good. Skyrim has some choices i don't like though not enough to really rollplay.

Okay, so why do we need spoilers for games that came out like 15 years ago? Sorry, but if you haven't played those games yet, too bad.

When I play a game like this, I usually play Good the first playthrough and go back to kill everyone you can the second time around. DA:O for one and KOTOR too back in the day. Sadly, it seemed like DA2 didn't let you choose this very often.

Actually, all the extra experience you can get from choosing to kill everyone in dialogue choices in KOTOR, DA:O can make it easier to grab an extra level, lol.

while that's true, IIRC it wasn't the easiest/most obvious sequence to save her at least going light side, I'm pretty sure I had to put her down my first try and remember being upset about it

yes, the dialog tree was not obvious to save her if you played light side, but it was possible. I dont even remember what you had to say, but if you did it just right you did not have to kill her, even playing light side. I actually would have not known this except a friend told me about it. BTW, that game had one of the best final battles and endings of any game I ever played, in direct contrast to kotor 2.

+1

I actually felt something when
Zack died.

The only thing I felt when
Aeris/Aerith got killed
was anger because
that bitch had some good gear on when she randomly left my party
.

While he was a crook or something, and now I forgot his name, I felt bad when
That guy in metro 2033 died that helped you get across the underground subway. Whiskey was it? Hell, add Ghost and Roach getting merc'd in Modern Warfare 2 - that was COLD!
