need to set down some foundation.

1920x1080 resolution since this is what most play at
max eye candy setting since this is the way the game designer intend it

Who uses 1080p for PC? that is a TV resolution.

You cant call yourself a gamer if your using less than 1920x1200

A lot when it comes to games on PC.
you gain nothing at all with those extra 120 lines for 99% of games and it will in fact reduce fov since it is a 16:10 aspect ratio compared to 16:9.

lol, so the VAST majority of gamers who are using 1920x1080 over 1200... aren't gamers? Troll less, dude.

Of all the games I've been playing (recently bought a 1440p monitor too)

Metro2033 in DX11 seems to runs the worst and looks amazing.
Natural Selection 2 looks great (real time lighting a la Doom3 ) and runs hard. (could use more optimization still)

I'm not counting games that aren't coded well IE MWO is cryengine 3 but looks crappy and runs crappy.

EDIT no signature yet: 2700k @ 4.6ghz, GTX 680 Stock 16gb ram. 1440P

Well...define GPU intensive.
What you mean by that? A game that has the worst FPS?
Bad game design and optimization can lead to excessive GPU load.
Or is it a game that does as little CPU load as possible and at the same time makes your GPU regret the day it was bor... manufactured.

This.

Thread is pointless. It's like asking what's the most CPU intensive program?

Flash can crash and make my CPU run at 100% if left unchecked. Or how about Winrar uncompressing gigs of info?

Any game can take your GPU to 100% on the usage scale if you turn vysnc off and let it run at the menu. Is that GPU intensive?

The only reason the "VAST" majority of people use 1080p is because people like Samsung believe their customers are stupid and need marketing bling like 1080p to sell their monitors even though they are clearly inferior to 16:10 on a PC.

16:9 is the worst thing to happen to the PC since console ports.

That's all well and good (and I believe most members of this forum will agree with you that 1080p, HD, high definition, widescreen, are all buzz words and it's a shame that it's bled its way into the PC tech culture) but when you make statements like:

"You can't call yourself a PC gamer if you don't game at YYYYxZZZZ", you sound like an elitist and a pretentious cock. Starcraft never supported resolutions above 640*480, I guess the grand-masters that play that game exclusively are not really "gamers" in your book, because of resolution limitations?

I guess I don't understand how that one thing has to do with another.

Im not as serious as you might think when you read my posts. It was more a crack at the oxymoron of GPU intentive and 1080p all used in one post.

i think just about everyone knows that most games dont even push mid level GPU's at 1080p ;)

Dude we don't need this conversation in a thread like this. I game at 1080p. Partly because I can't comfortably afford a better monitor at the moment, especially after choosing to upgrade my pc over it, and partly because it isn't a huge difference to me.

Games like Metro and Battlefield are still dropping my fps below 60 at times. If I turn off Vsync, I can still notice some games are more intensive than others. I think it's a relative comparison of fps in games that OP is asking about. Not sure what his reasons are, but anyways I'm gonna vote for Witcher II with ubersampling as well. I can't even run that at 30fps quite a bit of the time with my 7950. Crysis 3 looks like it might try to take the crown with possibly poor optimization, but we'll see when it is closer to launch.

Tell that to my poor little HD7770. I guess it is not really "mid level" though, maybe something like a 7850 would be considered mid level.

But yea, like someone else said, the thing that really brings it to its knees is Metro 2033 in DX 11 mode. I thought DX11 was supposed to me very efficient. I must not have very discerning vision though, because I have a hard time telling the difference between DX 9, DX10 or DX11 in that game. Maybe it is just because it is so dark most of the time that I cant see anything anyway.

My mistake, thought you were overly serious. Had you pegged wrong; my apologies.

7770 is decent card. Try turning off some of eye-candy effects. I played Metro 2033 on 8800 GTS 320MB before it died.

But yes. 7770 is only one leg in mid-end.
LOW:7700 series: 7750, 7770
MID: 7800 series: 7850, 7870
XT
HIGH: 7900 series: 7950, 7970
One would think it is preety simple naming scheme

3DMark!

Oh wait...that's not a game.

Furmark! It can load my GPUs to 100%

Oh wait...that's not a game.

Some games give me constant 96%+ GPU usage but might not be doing it for the reasons you think.

good questions. regardless of how you slice it.

simply - which game (at 1920x1080 with all the eye candy) is the most demanding for any given gpu (including the fastest quad sli/quad cf).

given your reasons. the latter.
