Wait, you live in America and had to BUY a grill? You mean you didnt have one? Or two? At least the one that has been passed down for generations? I can only assume that you are first generation immigrants, the both of you.

Just the thought of someone living in the states (despite the slightly lamer east coast) without a grill is.....

I have friends who have children where both work. The childcare rates is about $900/child/month!

OMG! If one has three children, that could rob the whole salary of one worker (as what is happening to one of my friends). :Q

I really don't know too many people in my life that actually enjoy their jobs, except my entrepreneur friends. There is a huge paranoia of legitimizing one's job (i.e. to be preceived as worthy) so they won't get laid-off....this has led to low morale, looong hours 7 days/week, and brutal office "kindergarten" politics. It's quite pathetic to see adults acting worse than children.

In Europe, labor laws prevent companies from engaging in "easy-way" firings when times are tough. It is VERY difficult to fire someone. Incompetence must be thoroughly documented to get anywhere with a firing. At least that is the way in Germany and France (btw, 36(?) hrs/week national law-they keep changing it...for the better)

At reunions and dinner table conversations, Europeans never talk about work---ever. In USA, it's the r'aison d'etre: "what do you do?"(subtext: what do you earn)?, etc. It's boring and extremely limited in thinking. I'm American but much more prefer to live in Europe. It's much more relaxed...................Today's Europe still harkens to America's "golden age" of the 50's when one income could support a family AND a house and where the main worker leisurely worked from 9-to-5.

:) it is defenitely wonderful to be welcomed. Well, this was the only avater that really suited me at the moment...with me embarking on the next stage of my life...like so many other indian daughters. I have succumbed to being a doctor at the moment...Not to say I don't want to be a doctor. I just don't want to be anything else more...I guess. By the way how did you guys figure I was indian...though it is almost true I am pleased that you guys guessed it. The name did it I am guessing?
Good job, nothing wrong with being Indian and a doctor! It's a lot of fun; i love every minute of it! MD.

Another future Indian doctor here :)

Currently in Year 2 of Genetics studies.

The reason I say Europe is b/c in America, the culture has devolved to being ALL about work. No more time to enjoy the company of others--which, btw, is the mantra in Europe (even in the stodgy UK).

Hope this fun puts things into perspective about what is truly important in life sista. :)

Work to LIVE...........instead of Live to WORK!

Cheers!
I just found out a few weeks ago that folks in Europe NEVER work past 5pm...like in France its against their labor laws or something! Also, at work I recently wrapped up a huge interview project centered in Europe...and we were pushing deadlines to get it done before August because all of Europe seems to go on vacation for the ENTIRE MONTH of August! Definately not work-centric...IMHO 'Leftist' Europe is a lot more family-centric than the right-wing and Christian Coalition will ever be on this side of the pond...

Theechosenone: What you said sums just about all the worries that I have about our generation and the generations to come. There is so much more than life than big houses, SUVs, and well material things. And I don't think most of america is like that either; but the system has somehow pushed people to become that. Pushed people to become efficient machines and no longer be people with families and leisure to enjoy life. I was just recently discussing with a friend about the permanence of job in Japan where people go into a company for life. They are not required to stay, but once they have the job it is hard to get them out. That sort of security can relieve people from a lot of stress. If you look at statistics; with high standard of living of those in America, the life expectancy should be a lot higher than it is. Part of the reason is the high stress life that most people lead. And the bottom line is if the people who are leading life with such a high standard of living are actually enjoying life.

illusion88: you have hit the jackpot; we are both immigrants. But that is not the reason we don't have grills, cause my family has a grill but both my bf and I were in college and living in apartments where we didn't have a place for a grill of our own. He is nuts about grilling and just moved into a new apartment with a balcony where he can keep is grill. So as soon as the opportunity presented itself; he was off to walmart (in the middle of a blackout) to buy a grill. He is too cute. (little secret: he is also in anandtech and the reason I joined here)

mdbound and noremorse: It is great hearing about those in the same plight as me. I believe I am getting cold feet now that med school is starting in two weeks. Also, I have all this time to think about the hectic life that I will be leading for..well the rest of my life..and I wonder if I made the right decision. At times I am super excited that I am going into medicine; and at other times all these doubts start creeping in. The bottom line is I want to be able to help people, and I hope I am meant to leave a mark in this world as a doctor. I am hoping I will love every minute of it too. I guess we will soon see.

Twinkletoes77: I am sorry you missed it. It was probably for the best anyways; because I know a lot of people who didn't have as much fun as I did.

pipboy: you are too funny

rh71: I deserved that...:)

Don't sweat it. My cousin just started his rotations and stuff in June (so this is his 3rd year I believe?) He also had cold feet after the first year but now he's so into it. Like get this...he's NEVER been a morning person. I've spent many weekends with him, and its his custom to stay up until 3am and then sleep through till 1 in the afternoon! Boy sleeps in a LOT. But his first rotation was OB/GYN. Some of my other cousins came to visit him in Chicago, where he took them out during the day (lots of walking, talking, sightseeing etc.--very tiring) and then dropped them off at the hotel at 7pm, then left to work his 8pm to 8am shift!!! Its easy for him now, I guess. And just a year ago he was thinking of quitting.

Most definitely! August is indeed the worst month to do business in Europe. They are all somewhere in the Mediterrenean for ONE month working on their tans--literally!

Xmas also is a loooong vacation time for Europe.

In addition, getting all of Europe under one hat is very difficult. Each country has their holidays and long weekends, so there is always a Euro manager with an "I'm on vacation" voicemail on his/her machine.

And as you said, 5PM is "outta there" time. They will never work over their time. 5 minutes after the end of their work hour is literally pushing it for them. You'll never see a person staying late to impress the boss. It doesn't work there. It's actually illegal in France where they have govt. officials check the company parking lots to make sure there are no cars.....the company could get fined! :Q

In German culture, the employees and bosses think that if you can't do your job in the 8 allotted hours, then you have been inefficient. There are no brownie points for extra hours. You would then be frowned upon as not being a good employee............In my experience, American execs stay late (aside from office politics), not b/c they actually work, but b/c they waste HOURS chit-chatting....I've seen this in toooo many companies to think otherwise.

The bottom line is that being a doctor isn't the only way to help people. As much as my fellow desis try to justify the medical profession on various grounds, the reality is that much of their desire and direction to pursue it is laid by their parents and community - whether it be overt pressue from the parents, or the indirect push of expectation. It's as simple as that.

The fact that you hope you are meant to leave a mark as a doctor, and not sure of it, leasds me to believe that you suffer from the classic paradigm I mentioned above. The choice to become a doctor isn't one which you hope you fit, but rather a decision based on strong deliberation and thought. Sadly, real choice isn't something that many desi kids have - even about something as important as their future career. Thank god my parents aren't the hyper-traditional tyrants most seem to be.

What is it about blackouts and college students? I remember a blackout back in college, at about 11pm. All the people in the dorms just started to yell and scream and come out of their dorms. It was like a big bonfire scene, except with no bonfire. College students... heh.
the best is college + snowstorm + the South...awesome combination...

When we had a huge snowstorm at Ohio State University this winter, they cancelled classes the next day. And literally thousands of kids were on the oval in the biggest snowball fight I had ever seen.

I was in Goa last summer for a few days. Stayed at the Fort Aguda Taj. Very nice, too bad it was raining (damn monsoon!!).

I still like Goa though.

if it wasn't for Tubstain there...I really wouldn't be here. Now the fact that he is a better cook than me is a huge dent in my a feminine ego since I like to cook for my man...grrrr...I'll make pani puri for you any day, maadindian. Hey, have you watched bend it like beckam.

btw...I am not exactly Indian. Here you see a proud Bangladeshi (unlike those indians, we are allowed duel citizenships...) and American. Born in Bangladesh and raised in America.

BlipBlop: BlipBlop:
You are absolutely right; there are many in my circumstance who are forced to do what society expects them to do it. I can't say that my parents overtly forced me, yet the expectation was always there. And if there was something else that I really wanted to do, I would have fought for it. Unfortunately I did not find anything in time, so I am stuck doing medicine. I can't say that I am stuck doing medicine because it is something that I want to do...it is just the lenght of time is so daunting..not to mention the financial matter. But at the moment I know after I get my MD, I want to get a mph degree in international health and be of use to those who really don't have any doctors and really really need it. Anyways, I want to be invovlved in more than just a clinical doctor ina a fancy a hospital that charges patients an arm and a leg to get a simple treatment.
