What is it about blackouts and college students? I remember a blackout back in college, at about 11pm. All the people in the dorms just started to yell and scream and come out of their dorms. It was like a big bonfire scene, except with no bonfire. College students... heh.
the best is college + snowstorm + the South...awesome combination...

When we had a huge snowstorm at Ohio State University this winter, they cancelled classes the next day. And literally thousands of kids were on the oval in the biggest snowball fight I had ever seen.

Thats something. By the way I woudl be your arch nemesis...UofM graduate. WE don't get any snow days. The reason is that some law student sued the school some years ago because he said that snow days should be illegal when we paid so much tuition money. So, he/she has sealed our fates...I remember walking over ice covered sidewalks to go to school. It took us half an hour to walk a normal five minute distance because everything was covered with a layer of ice..so it was like walking to class on in a skating rink. They not only did not cancel the exam; they gave us only couple of minutes extra even though people were coming in late to exam. It was horrible.

btw...I am not exactly Indian. Here you see a proud Bangladeshi (unlike those indians, we are allowed duel citizenships...) and American. Born in Bangladesh and raised in America.

No I haven't seen "Bend It Like Beckham". My favorite Indian movie is still "Company" and I recently saw "Darna Mana Hai" which was good (but you have to see it with an home theater system on dvd...cause the sound really makes the movie).

You gotta wach Bend it..awesome movie..specially speaking for us desi females..and absolutely hilarious with fat indian aunties, mom forcing her to learn to cook "a full panjabi dish..both meat and vegetarian", and a lot more. Now "company"...I admit it was a good movie...(and whats his name is hot, but that is probably not the reason you liked it). I do hope you have seen "dil chata hai" and "lagaan"...best indian movies I have seen in a while. Though Tubstain doesn't like dil chata hai...I don't see why since it was about one of the only indian movies without a huge plot hole. By the way why did everyone end up in the desert in company?

Hlapana, MadIndian,
Watch Monsoon Wedding. A hilarious movie.

Lagaan was good but tooo damn long. That movie needs some serious editing.

I heard people firing their guns in the suburbs like a old western 4th of July.

I went out to the camper, turned the generator and A/C on, watched Star Wars and grilled some hot dogs.

I'm confused. You feel people in Japan are LESS stressed than employees in the U.S.? I think the suicide rate there is extremely high. In addition to pressures of work and living in 10x10 apartments the economic situation there has been going sideways the last 15 years...

If you look at statistics; with high standard of living of those in America, the life expectancy should be a lot higher than it is. Part of the reason is the high stress life that most people lead. And the bottom line is if the people who are leading life with such a high standard of living are actually enjoying life.

i'm baffled more than a few times...

just trying to understand your point. At any rate, you appear to be an intelligent college student at the peak of your idealism. You'll be amazed how your perspective can/will change in 10 years..

You may very well be correct that I am traveling on a cloud of idealism...and I fear that it may be the case. At the same time I fear that in ten years I will have lost my "peak" of idealism, specially after having gone through all the schooling and what not. I just hope that I have enough idealism left that I make some difference in this world. If you think about it and look at history; who are the people who brought about the most social changes? Who are the people who stood up to injustice? Usually the young and the college students who are riding the euphoric idealistic cloud (if you want, I will give some examples). The problem is those who are idealistic tend to have the least power. If we had more idealistic people with power; maybe this world would be a lot better place. Maybe we do need a little bit more idealism in this world.

Also, there is nothing wrong with being socially aware. Also about the japanese comment; I admit I cannot back it up. However, my impression was that education in the east is a lot harder before college...and most of the suicides that I know of are for high school level students. Where as the educational level before college in America is despicable and is rapidly going down with the wonderful budget cut for education by our wonderful president. However even though the education before college is not so great; the stress level and competition during and after college is at a maximum. Once you enter the capitalistic world...well..you lose your idealism I guess.

Monsoon wedding was okay; probably not one of my favorites. Lagaan...well..the lenght is really a hindi movie thing and you get used to it. I do agree about the lenght but for some reason we desis seem to cut a lot of slack when we watch hindi movies or we just don't watch them. However if you liked monsoon wedding...I really suggest some good movies. Probably can't find them in all movie places but all campuses have them. Deepa Mehta and Mira Nair are two of my favorite directors...for their artsie films at least. Monsoon wedding was by Mira Nair; but Deepa Mehta has Earth (about the indian pakistan partisioning...amazing amazing movie), and Fire (about lesbianism in India, a very taboo subject there), and water (which I am not sure was ever released in India, need to watch it soon). Among Mira Nair's work, I would defenitely suggest Salaam Bombay; really tears your heart out and stomps all over it. After watching these movie, I don't know how anybody would NOT want to help those in need.
