The Book of Abraham papyri were thought lost in the 1871 Great Chicago Fire. However, in 1966 several fragments of the papyri were found in the archives of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and in the LDS Church archives. They are now referred to as the Joseph Smith Papyri. Upon examination by professional Mormon and non-Mormon Egyptologists, the papyri were found to bear no resemblance to Joseph Smith's interpretation, and were common Egyptian funerary texts, dating to about the first century BC.

Does this contradict what I said?

By the way, I make absolutely no connection between a person's IQ and his belief. And if someone is born into a Mormon family I have no problem imagining he/she believing in Mormonism. My purely academy question is how an outsider can accept Mormonism, or for that matter any religion of modern origin claiming modern miracles.

This. I have liked most of the individual Mormons I've met, they're generally good people, not preachy like you'd expect and the sorts of folks who you'd want as neighbors, co-workers, etc. I say this despite the fact that I think the mormon religion is even more laughable than most and my very low opinion of the LDS church as an organization.

I'll pretty much agree with this. Overall, I'm probably the biggest Mormon-hater on this board, but the individual Mormon people were usually "hecka" nice folks. (although they're pretty damned cliquish and can be prejudiced against folks who aren't Mormons)

I'm surprised at how many "intelligent" people that believe the religious tripe...especially Mormonism and Scientology.

I read an interesting interview with Ken Jennings once where he was essentially asked why he believed in all the wacky things that Mormons do. While he didn't come out and say it the underlying message in his response seemed to be was that deep down he didn't buy into all of it but he valued the community & a lot of the values they had.

all the atheists know this, but i'll just say it anyway

religion is about faith, if it was about facts or something you could prove it wouldn't require any faith

whether it is the Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) or Hinduism, Buddhism, Shinto, Taoism, etc , there is an element of faith

discussing religion with people that outright reject FAITH as a 'dillusion' and 'no one with IQ above 80 could ever have FAITH' etc etc is a complete nef fest

The Apostle Paul taught that "faith is the substance [assurance] of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1).

if you have to see something/GOD (it proven to you as a fact the way science does) to believe in it, then religion isn't for you.

if you feel the need to actively dissuade others from religion on an internet forum (or real life), i really wonder why you feel it is worth your time if you think it is so much of a mental disease

(this is directed to the general 'YOU', not the OP or any single poster of this thread)

This is correct. I lived in Utah for awhile when I was younger and had several friends that were Mormon. But parents instantly hated me dating their daughters when they found out I wasn't a Mormon.

I'm sure part of the appeal of Mormonism is the excitement of belonging to a secret society or brotherhood. There are many levels of the Mormon church that the general public is not aware of and being part of something so secretive is probably perceived as special and makes members feel important.

Ok this is like the 100th post on Mormons. Why is it always Mormons? Why doesn't someone start a thread on Protestants or Catholics or Potters house or Jehovah Witness. What is everyone's fascination with Mormons?

You want to read about what we believe go to www.mormon.org

There are plenty of other posts regarding other religions both in OT as well as P&N.

The public facing website only scratches the surface of what Mormons believe. If you're a practicing Mormon with a Temple recommend then you know that.

Two threads same title in both forums both on page one. I don't know what the OP is trying to accomplish. Yea us Mormons are just terrible people. I think I'll go blow some stuff up and wage J hod on something or someone.

All religions are pretty nuts (and their are plenty of threads on them). But Mormons are one of the few that have actual concrete scientific evidence that one of their basic premises completely bogus. Plus magic underwear is funny.

Yeah both from the same OP and the other he deleted as much as is possible...feeling the victim today? Catholics get bashed around here way more than Mormons...

It's a combination of the magic underwear and the way you were set up.

South Park episode explanation, Mormons and Scientologists get it the most because of the south park explanations. Which are fairly accurate and highlight the insanity involved in these two. They are very similar in that respect.

The thing that really creeps me out about Mormons, is that they baptise people after their deaths, like Anne Frank.

It's like "Oh we're nice, friendly, smiley people... but we will wait till you die and steal your soul"

Like I said, the other thread were posted by mistake and I delete it. I am in no way connecting religion with morality. I am just saying it is more difficult for an outsider like myself to accept modern religions because their claims are more verifiable.

Apparently the soul has the option to accept or deny the baptism, the proxy is simply just offering them the option.
