My Game Boy Pocket, GBA, DS, DS Lite, N64, GameCube, and Wii are all still running just fine, save for a chunk of missing plastic out of my Game Boy Pocket; come to think of it though, my XBOX works fine too :p

I bought mine used for $150 just so I could play Burnout Revenge. I regret nothing, it's a fantastic game.

Because there are a lot of good 360-only games like Dead Rising and Crackdown, plus mult-platform games that play best on the 360.

I'm lucky that I have enough unplayed PC, PS2 and PS3 games piled up to keep me busy, so I can wait for the redesign.

Otherwise I'd probably grit my teeth, hold my nose, cross my fingers, and open my wallet to buy the 360 now but with an extended warranty for when it dies.

I've had no problems with my 360 so far <knock on wood>. That being said, from all I've seen, M$'s failure rates are typically accurate for <i> new systems </i> However, for refurbs, I'd say the failure rate probably is triple what they spout off about, if not worse. They've really got to get a handle on the refurbishment process, as most people who get their first refurb usually end up having to get a second or third.

I'm on my second 360. The one they sent me is starting to lock up a bit, but I'm not sure if it's just Oblivion causing it or the 360 itself.

There is something to what Passions says. I don't think it is user error but I think environmental elements may be an issue with a lot of these. Then again if people are being supplied with refurbs as their replacements then it is no wonder that they have worse luck with failure rates than those with a new box that has never had an issue.

my friend is on his 3rd.
they are junk, make no mistake about it.
red rings, cheap build.
sound like a goddamn hairdryer.

people like to bash the ps3 every chance they get, but side by side physically, the ps3 is quieter, and makes the xbox look like a yugo next to a cadillac.

Yes, user error. You got it.

I have treated my 360 no worse than any of my other consoles... it sits on my desk with plenty of air around it for ventilation. All my discs are flawless. I have NEVER had any sort of problems with any console other than my launch PS1 (and that was because it was used so much that the lens track wore out).

wierd, ive had my systems since launch with 0 problems so far

Me too, and my friend. My other friends got their's a few months afterwards and noone has had a problem yet.

What's your point? The thousands of people who are having the exact same problems with their 360s aren't just making it up.

What's your point? He was just stating his experience and the experience of his friends, he didn't say anywhere that someone was making anything up. I have had my box since launch and I haven't had any problems either. That has no correlation as to whether or not I believe anyone else. Paranoid a little?

I had my system for about 6 months, and played it EVERY night during that time (about half games, half movies), and didn't have a problem. I've given 3 of them as presents too, and only my brother's system had a problem (which was easily covered under warranty).

Hmm.. This is actually kind of funny and disturbing: http://www.xbox360forum.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2

At this moment, there are 20 non-stickied threads on the front page of their general forum. At least 11 of these threads explicitly have to do with failing units.

By contrast, here: http://www.ps3forums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=14, there are 50 non-stickied threads on the first page. Of these, one has to do with a hardware problem that was fixed, and one has to do with relative build quality between the PS3 and the 360, and the rest have to do with features and whatnot.

This is a shame, because other than hardware quality, it looks like the 360 is the system to get.

You can't go by the number of posts like that. There are many factors to consider for why the xbox forum has more hardware failure threads.

So anaecdotally the failure rate is only 25% after 6 months? :)

Edit: but if you add TruePaige's 3 out of 5 below, the failure rate climbs to 55% :(

True. However, it is apparent that people are concerned with Xbox 360 build quality, and that does appear to be far and away the number one issue people have with the system.

The number one issue with the PS3, on the other hand, appears to be that there are fewer games available for it.

You should think about filing a complaint with the BBB. The more people that make "official" complaints, the more likely they'll start treating this thing seriously.

At the very least, by complaining to the BBB, your issue will get escalated pretty quickly.

What a piece of crap.

All I have to say is, all my old consoles still work, N64, PS2, etc.

Wow. I'd been itching to get a 360 now that I have a decent TV to play it on (60" SXRD, w00t) but maybe I'll sit back and wait for a while.

I would love to see a geographical distribution of the 360 failure rates. It seems like I'm hearing more and more of these stories now that the summer heat is here... Mine just failed 3 weeks ago. It would be interesting if the hotter weather is causing more failures.
