That may be it, but there has been a consistent pattern of 360's failing when something "big" hits. A big release like the Halo beta will cause lots of players to use it more which in turn wears out the system.

I think the thing right now is people are out of school for the summer, so they're playing their games more.

Me too, and my friend. My other friends got their's a few months afterwards and noone has had a problem yet.

What's your point? The thousands of people who are having the exact same problems with their 360s aren't just making it up.

My point is the only people you hear about are the people who's have broken.

Don't get me wrong, any breaking this early (save for people doing stuff like putting them in a place with no ventilation or dropping them) is bad, but the issue is *way* overblown.

It's not like they're dying en masse like PS2s or even the Xbox 1s with Thomson DVD drives.

It's a shame the 360 has such high failure rates, seeing as it is an amazing console in every other fashion. I got my first 360 at launch and it died about 2 months later. That refurb is still going for me, although it freezes a lot on some games. I'm planning on trading up towards an Elite this fall once the have the GPU transitioned to 65nm. Hopefully that will reduce the heat output and fix the RROD issue, which from what I read is caused by heat from the CPU/GPU melting solder and causing parts to disconnect.

Maybe one day MS will learn how to make hardware.

I'm really surprised you guys go through all this, after the 2nd one went bad i would have demanded my money back and washed hands on the whole ordeal.

o_O They sell you a defective system and quote you 140$ to fix a design flaw on your 400$ game system and you still plan on buying another one?

Fool me once etc.

The system is worth it for me.

And of course, the problem is..once you already have a game library, you don't want to just stop buying the system if yours breaks. Happened with the PS2 like mad.

Right now the 360 is the only console choice for online gaming, and the overall library is still way ahead of the PS3.

It's too bad that buying a 360 is really renting it for $215/year (if you get the extended warranty) plus $50/year for Live, but it's (ahem) the only game in town.

Also if your console breaks out of warranty MS will repair it for $140, so your still cheaper than the PS3.

That's an awful way to justify it. Especially when the system you're getting back is pretty much guaranteed to break again.

(and again and again and...)

It's not a justification, but rather a worst case scenario. If your console would fail after a year you can still get it fixed and you get another warranty. After using Xbox Live w/ GoW and Halo 3 there is no way I'd be able to used a Playstation (at least w/ the PSN in its current iteration).

You should think about filing a complaint with the BBB. The more people that make "official" complaints, the more likely they'll start treating this thing seriously.

At the very least, by complaining to the BBB, your issue will get escalated pretty quickly.

I've determined that the BBB really doesn't make any difference in anything. All they do is provide a forum for you to make a complaint against a specific company, and allows the company to respond. I've filed a few complaints and nothing has ever helped my issues. The company just comes back and says "We did everything according to our policy" and that's that.

Hmm mine's still going strong after about a year. I did have an issue with Ninety Nine Nights where the console just refused to read the disc after I beat a mission. I looked at the disc and the disc was flawless. I've had maybe 2-3 freeze ups in the console's lifetime, but for all I know, this could be bad coding. Heck, Gears of War will freeze if you attempt to sign on a character in a multiplayer game that doesn't have XBOX Live Gold. Saw it happen consistently after that happened and it was quite logically the only thing that could be doing it. Super good coding! Way to work on the visuals ;).

I've always used an aftermarket cooler on my 360.. has anyone that used one of these had their 360 fail? I mean, essentially the issue here is still too much heat, but the amount shouldn't be causing an issue; however, it is.

I ended up buying the PS3 yesterday. It's dead silent, and appears to play Oblivion pretty well, so I'm happy. As this is my first ever console, I'm still getting used to it (lol my noob character got himself killed in the sewers, so I guess I suck :p )

At least for the 360, it will speed up the process for you.

people like to bash the ps3 every chance they get, but side by side physically, the ps3 is quieter, and makes the xbox look like a yugo next to a cadillac.

Hell yah ... I buy my consoles based soley on the looks of the console, nothing else. Doesn't everyone?

Out of my three friends who have a 360, all of them have had at least one system die. The heatsink clamp and fan shroud design is terrible, thusly causing all these problems.

On the bright side, if you have a system out of warranty and getting the 3 RRoD, you can fix it for about $5 in parts and a few hours of work. Did this to a system my friend had, it's been working great ever since.

I might believe it was an uncommon thing thing if I hadn't heard of so many people who have gone through MULTIPLE 360s.

Yeah, but how often do you play yours? I play mine once every few weeks and I've had zero problems.

My guess is that the referbs are more likely to fail since they were previous returns that failed because of manufacturing defects. They can fix them but they will still be of lower quality causing them to fail again.

Jesus! Don't get me wrong, I love my Xbox 360 and my Dec 2005 model has been running flawlessly since, but this issue really demands someone address it. I've had one coworker have his die on him. I'm actually going to go home and check to see if I can extend my warranty. :p
