If somebody has an opinion that is obviously wrong such as Mr. DMCowen674 stating that -- stating that $3.89 a gallon is in fact $4.00 a gallon......even though we all know that it is not goes back to the subject of intellectual dishonesty.....
But I would not even use the word intellectual to describe anything Mr. DMCowen674 posts!

Last I will say in this thread derailment.
Seriously, mods, can this intentionally disruptive and dishonest character just be got rid of, once and for all?

..blah blah blah..
I already showed you the WMDs his team found. You are just too cowardsly to write him and ask why he lied about it later. I realize it is less frightening for you to troll me anonymously on an Internet forum, but you do not make your family proud with your cowardace.
He has voted for Option 1. With much deserved irony, return his request.

He has a smug feeling of impunity against all moderators and members that cannot be reformed, and if anything, with a prolonging of removal, is demonstrating an even greater propensity to aggravate.

I can say whatever the fuck I want, it's my opinion.

Just a point of clarification here - no you can't.

AnandTech Forum Guidelines
Do not use our Forums to post any material, or links to any material, which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law.

Once an error in statement has been proven, repeating that error in statement is a violation in the posting guidelines as you are now posting material which is knowingly false.

Claiming the number 5 is equal to the number 4.79 is factually false.

Once this has been pointed out to a member, if that member persists in claiming otherwise then they are knowingly posting false information, an actionable violation of the posting guidelines.

Claiming it is an opinion and thus somehow absolved of falling under the purview of the posting rules is a fallacy that will not be upheld by the moderation.

I didn't say $4.79 was a fact.

I said $4.79 is my opinion.

So are you saying Opinions are not allowed on Anandtech Forums?

I never said it was a fact.

If rounding is not allowed on Anandtech Forums then state that.

You also better apply the rule to everyone in the forums

Rounding Numbers

What is "Rounding" ?

Rounding means reducing the digits in a number while trying to keep its value similar. The result is less accurate, but easier to use.

Example: 73 rounded to the nearest ten is 70, because 73 is closer to 70 than to 80.

How to Round Numbers

  • Decide which is the last digit to keep
  • Leave it the same if the next digit is less than 5 (this is called rounding down)
  • But increase it by 1 if the next digit is 5 or more (this is called rounding up)
Example: Round 74 to the nearest 10

  • We want to keep the "7" as it is in the 10s position
  • The next digit is "4" which is less than 5, so no change is needed to "7"
Answer: 70
(74 gets "rounded down")

Example: Round 86 to the nearest 10

  • We want to keep the "8"
  • The next digit is "6" which is 5 or more, so increase the "8" by 1 to "9"
Answer: 90
(86 gets "rounded up")

So: when the first digit removed is 5 or more, increase the last digit remaining by 1.

LMAO!!!!!! Rounding numbers don't make them a factual number or statement. Facts are the actual price of the gas.

Rounding numbers don't make them a factual number or statement.

That's the point. Never said it was a fact or a statement.

I said it's my opinion.

When you buy a car for $14,789 when you talk to someone about how much you paid for the car do you walk around saying you paid $14,789 or do you have the right to an opinion that you paid $15K for it?

People don't walk around talking in absolutes. They round up or down and have the right to do so.

Are you saying that right does not exist here?

No, rounding up is not an opinion it's a nonfactual statement.

Just admit you're rounding up the price in an attempt to mislead forum users.

You didn't answer the questions.

Do you walk around telling people you paid $14,789 or do you have the right to round up?

Do you round down? Do you have the right to say you paid $14K?

This is the kind of nonsense that I suspect the community is nearly unified in being fed up with and would really like to have moderation deal with it in a sort of "end-game" manner. Just a hunch.

Sigh....

Let us say that I am for the legalization of pot and would smoke pot at that point. Does that mean I must smoke it while it is illegal?

According to your poor logic, you must say yes. Most others would not use your logic.

Just for clarification sake, if he said "about $5" or "around $5", that would be fine, right? Since (at least IMO) $4.79 is about $5.

Pretty cute

President Obama just shot Pelosi on the Capitol Building steps. This is just my opinion.

(In case it was not clear by the rolleyes, this was posted as an example as to what is wrong with dm's view of what constitutes an opinion)

Of course, anything to denote an approximation is being made so as to avoid misleading. ~$5 would work, etc.

This is the kind of stuff that is so overwhelmingly self-evident that I can understand why members of P&N really have voiced their concerns of intellectual dishonesty because it really takes a stretch of the imagination to rationalize how or why an individual wouldn't understand the distinction that is to be made.

The phrase "knowingly false" is in the posting guidelines for a reason, if simply claiming the falsification is a matter of personal opinion then the phrase would have zero relevance and thus would have never been included in the guidelines in the first place.

There is a certain self-consistency to it all. Intellectual dishonesty is most evident when it breaks with its own self-consistency checks.

When the intellectual checksum fails, its time to be suspicious as to the integrity of the contents of the file.

Thanks, that is what I figured, but wanted to make sure I was on the same page of those who enforce the rules. :)

Exactly. Saying around $5 is ROUNDING

You are splitting hairs

http://www.ehow.com/facts_7340521_meaning-_splitting-hairs__.html

The phrase "splitting hairs" means to argue over small points or trifles, often to the point of being pedantic.

It is usually used against a person negatively

Again are you doing that just for me or are you going to apply that to everyone?

What is your opinion on dmcowen's behavior in this thread? Because right now it seems like you're just trying to silence people with conservative viewpoints...
