I don't know how much simpler I can make it...

DO NOT USE MOBIL 1 HIGH MILEAGE MOTOR OIL IN 2005 AND NEWER CARS REGARDLESS OF YOUR MILEAGE!!!

Don't use Mobil 1 High Mileage oil in a 2005 and newer car - regardless of how many miles you have on the odometer. Yes, the label "implies" you should use HM oil if your car has over 75,000 miles on it. However, 2005 and newer cars require ILSAC GF-4 spec motor oil - period. Mileage has nothing to do with it!

DO NOT USE REGULAR MOBIL 1 ILSAC GF-4 MOTOR OIL IN 2004 AND OLDER CARS!!!

Don't use regular Mobil 1 oil in a 2004 and older car - regardless of what the label "implies" about protection. ILSAC GF-4 spec oil does NOT contain the proper additive package necessary for 2004 and older cars. If it did, it would wreck the emissions equipment in 2005 and newer cars. If you're running ILSAC GF-4 motor oil, your 2004 and older motor is NOT fully protected! That's why they make M-1 HM motor oil.

I know all this probably comes as a shock to ppl, but motor oil specifications are in constant flux - and it's going to change even more in the future, with the new diesel engines, hybrids and direct-injected gasoline engines. By 2012, they're predicting that 25% of all new automobiles in America will be turbo-charged - and we'll be having this discussion all over again.

BTW, 50% of the new cars sold in Europe are diesel powered, and that percentage is increasing. Europe has gasoline and heavy-duty diesel engine oil specifications, called ACEA Oil Sequences, which roughly correspond to API's Service Categories. LoL! Sorry! If you're driving a Euro, none of the above applies to you. However, Mobil 1 makes special motor oil for your cars too! :)

No. As fascinating as all this is, discussion of synthetic oils and which oil to use in which cars belong in The Garage. VinDSL has given everyone the information necessary to determine whether or not this deal is for you. This thread is for a discussion of the $30 Mobil Oil Change at Advance Auto Parts. Thanks.

Agreed... that was my point... if it digresses into that type of discussion it should be moved elsewhere... I didn't realize there was already an auto related forum when I suggested off-topic.

Thanks!

Vin, constantly repeating, "DO NOT USE REGULAR MOBIL 1 ILSAC GF-4 MOTOR OIL IN 2004 AND OLDER CARS!!! " is NOT making it SIMPLE. Cite CLEAR references from CREDIBLE sources because I can't find any to support your claims, and what evidence you have offered states the contrary to what you are scaring all of us with. The more I look into it, the more I think you're wrong. If this is common knowledge then the warnings should be plastered all over the internet. Clarify, don't just offer your own explanation, please. Thank you.

Thanks, allisolm!

I didn't know how far I should go down this 'Rabbit Hole'. I just wanted to make ppl aware of the situation, NOT hijack the thread.

Basically, there's no such thing as a universal, generic, fully-compatible motor oil - not any more - not these days!

Luckily, Mobil 1 offers a variety of synthetic oils, made primarily and specifically for certain types of motors - and they will offer even more specialty oils in the future. Ppl just need to be aware of the differences, in order to protect the (often sizable) investment in their vehicles...

Back on topic:

I've been running Mobil 1 synthetic motor oil since well into the last century - through many major reformulations - and this is an excellent deal, especially if you like M-1 oil filters!

I've tried several types and brands of oil filters over the years - used to cut them open and see what was inside, e.g. how well they were constructed (or not) and I can vouch for M-1 oil filters being one of the best filters made. However, I think the cost-to-benefit ratio is rather poor (at normal pricing).

Personally, I prefer Purolator PureONE oil filters, for a myriad of reasons, which I won't go into. Suffice to say, they are a better filter than the M-1, and you can buy them for half the price of an M-1 oil filter at Pep Boys.

So, to put this deal into perspective...

I can buy M-1 HM motor oil in bulk (5 qts) at Wal-Mart for $26, and a PureONE oil filter at Pep Boys for $6 - for a total price of $32 - any day of the week. In that regard, I suppose it makes this a 'Warm Deal', but I don't want to be accused of thread crapping. :D

Anyway, everybody have a nice day - I gotta run! Hopefully, we opened some eyes here...

No. If you want citations and references and claim support and evidence and explanations, ask for them in the Garage. Not here. End of the discussion not related to the deal.
