DO NOT USE MOBIL 1 HIGH MILEAGE MOTOR OIL IN 2005 AND NEWER CARS REGARDLESS OF YOUR MILEAGE!!!
Don't use Mobil 1 High Mileage oil in a 2005 and newer car - regardless of how many miles you have on the odometer. Yes, the label "implies" you should use HM oil if your car has over 75,000 miles on it. However, 2005 and newer cars require ILSAC GF-4 spec motor oil - period. Mileage has nothing to do with it!
DO NOT USE REGULAR MOBIL 1 ILSAC GF-4 MOTOR OIL IN 2004 AND OLDER CARS!!!
Don't use regular Mobil 1 oil in a 2004 and older car - regardless of what the label "implies" about protection. ILSAC GF-4 spec oil does NOT contain the proper additive package necessary for 2004 and older cars. If it did, it would wreck the emissions equipment in 2005 and newer cars. If you're running ILSAC GF-4 motor oil, your 2004 and older motor is NOT fully protected! That's why they make M-1 HM motor oil.
I know all this probably comes as a shock to ppl, but motor oil specifications are in constant flux - and it's going to change even more in the future, with the new diesel engines, hybrids and direct-injected gasoline engines. By 2012, they're predicting that 25% of all new automobiles in America will be turbo-charged - and we'll be having this discussion all over again.
BTW, 50% of the new cars sold in Europe are diesel powered, and that percentage is increasing. Europe has gasoline and heavy-duty diesel engine oil specifications, called ACEA Oil Sequences, which roughly correspond to API's Service Categories. LoL! Sorry! If you're driving a Euro, none of the above applies to you. However, Mobil 1 makes special motor oil for your cars too!
