MMORPGs = the devil

No, you fool, not me. The girl of my desires has completely shut me out because I don't play nicely with her gaming habits (In other words, I call her or IM her or do somthing that interrupts her playtime, which now amounts to every waking second that she isn't in school or at work)

This is the second time that I've lost to a GDMF game coded by some freaks with nothing better to do than ruin lives and profit from it.

How the heck do you lose your right hand to an MMORPG? Sony cut it off because you stopped paying for your EQ account?

So what you're saynig is, she'd rather play a video game infront of a computer rather than hang out with someone like you. SO either you picked a nerdy girlfriend or you're not worth it to her?

You've never observed an MMORPG player before, have you?

They start out as normal, productive, usually social human beings. The higher their level gets, the more time they want to spend playing. By level 70 in most games, they have totally closed their outside social life. At this point they are terminal - but it only gets worse from there. Then they start to sleep less to play more. Once they're sleeping the bare minimum, they start to skip work and school. Ultimately, they end up damn near unemployed, only doing the absolute minimum to pay for their doritos, mountain dew, and game account.

I've never once seen a player who came out of it after being in for 6 months.

I played Everquest for more than two years.

I played it every waking moment of my life.

I had more than 4500 hours spent on just one character, but I had many other high level characters.

I managed to quit. I "quit" a good three or four times over the span of two more years.

But I am now 100% everquest free.

But it calls to me every once in a while. Hearing someone say a familiar word brings back the memories and it makes me want to play again.

And every now and then, I surf the fan websites.

It'll really never go away, but I have it down to this bear minimum < 1 hour/week occupation of my time.

Much better than the 60 hours/week I had four-ish years ago.

I quit SWG cold turkey after about 5 months of chronic playing. Man I was addicted to that game. The funny thing is, about 3 months after not touching the game, I tried playing again and it did absolutely nothing for me, so I finally canceled my account. I was pretty bad when I was in my peak, but never to the point where I preferred it over hanging out with a lady. 😉

So reform is possible - but it can't be cured.

Just pray that your SO is a power gamer. Speaking from experience, once a power gamer gets to a certain plateau, or realizes that there is no "best" character, then the addiction is over.

On the other hand, if your SO is there to explore the virtual world... well it's all over.

dfi

they are stupid. its stupid busy work to level up your character. you don't gain any skill. occasional players just get scrweed over by people who play all day, nothing to do with skill. your character gains power, you do not. atleast fps and whatever your twitchy aim stays with you to whatever game u play😛

I'm playing World of Warcraft right now...

Fun, but not addicting... I still spend 90% of my time outside of work with my girlfriend... That's much more fun then a video game could ever be... 🙂

Eh...I play them, but I don't get engrossed like some do. A couple hours per night before I get too sleepy to play, and I only play after kids/wife are sleeping. Some of those wackos play 14-16 hours a day (and that's common-players brag about it!). My take is, if you're spending that much time playing a game, then your real life must be too uninteresting to deal with. Sad really...

My dad left my mom, moved hundreds of miles away, all because of EQ and Dark Age of Camelot.
I was playing EQ, and I told my dad about it, because he is disabled and cannot work, and was bored at home.
Well he told me he was not interested in playing those types of games. But I kept telling him he should play, it was really fun. Well he tried it. And he played...day after day after day after year after year. He was hooked. Then he started playing DAoC.
He married someone in the game, and left my mom and went to Maryland, from Texas.
To be honest they are both better off now, but even so.

Yep....hit the nail on the head there.

I've lost no one, but I've seen it happen to people I know. Some lost themselves to those games, burnt out, etc... because of them.

I'd kill to meet a girl who was into these games at the same level as I am. I play a few hours a night, but only to replace the hours I used to watch tv during, I still go out, work, see friends, etc...
