What an awkward looking check swing strikeout. Probably would have gone foul even if he managed to hit it but still.

I don't know why any hitter bothers swinging at Millers slider, it's not even close to a strike. That was the game there. Oh well Cubs need to come to play tomorrow

Might not matter tonight but I'm baffled why the Cubs pulled Strop. He's pretty good and I don't think putting in Wood to get one single batter was a smart use of resources. Game is still close and you don't want to blow your bullpen up early if you hope to tie it up later. Do you really want to chance needing to use a position player if it goes more than one or two extra innings?

Cleveland appears to be dominating again. Low score, just 3-0 in the 8th right now, but they rolled over the Blue Jays the same way.

Well rested Indians killed tired Cubs.

Don't know if it was a factor of rest or not, but the Cubs were doing some serious hacking at the plate tonight. Some of the low swinging strikes (some well out of the zone) made them look just silly. Some of Miller's pitches they swung at were just baffling.

Edit: dayum, 15 K's for the Cubbies.

Hope Cleveland finishes this up quick... They pre-empted Scream Queens tonight.

Very poor balls/strikes calls in Game 1 on both sides. There was one in the later innings with the Tribe at bat - called third strike that was 6 inches off the plate outside. I mean that's terrible.

Admittedly I only watched the first half of the game but I didn't find the home plate officiating bad at all. Kluber's stuff was just dominant, he was like Greg Maddux with an extra 5mph on the fastball. His arm slot is so consistent that you have no idea what the pitch is until you've wailed wildly at it. It was tailing back over the plate whereas Lester was a bit more off the plate and never would quite come back in the zone. I love watching pitching like that, it's a thing of beauty.

FWIW, I very much want the Cubbies to win but coming into the series I didn't give them much of a chance. When Cleveland picked Miller up from the Yankees, I figured Cleveland was the prohibitive favorite unless one of their starters did something stupid like playing with a drone.

I think it was consistent, though. The zone was clearly off the right side of the plate by a few inches from the first inning and on. And also crazy low--I recall when Bryant took a pitch under his knees and was trotting off to first when the Ump called strike in the first inning. The way I see it, as long as the umpire maintains a consistent zone that is, at least, reasonable, then it's fair.

But I think the consensus with last night is probably that it was too low and too far off the plate. If the general bewilderment of the players trying to figure out this zone early on in the game isn't telling, then I don't know of any better evidence for a bad strike zone.
