Frankly, I've got money riding against the Mets this year, in part because I got great odds from a Mets fan friend of mine who's convinced this will be their year. I'm not convinced, however.
The bullpen issue has been addressed, but what about Beltran? He's virtually untested. Coming from a rabid Astros fan, I watched his every move last season, and while he was stellar in the playoffs, he wasn't the most impressive player in the league before September/October. Moreover, he played for relatively small market teams, at least in comparison to New York. Playing in New York comes with enormous pressure. A good game in NY isn't going 2/5 with a couple of RBIs, a run and a steal. That's supposed to be average. A good game in NY is 2 HR, 5 RBIs and a couple of flashy plays in the field, which isn't going to happen every day. I suspect that if Beltran does not continue to produce the way he did in the playoffs for Houston last season, the media and fans in NY will begin to wear on him with their criticism. Long story short, I'm really honestly curious to see how Beltran's faring around the All-Star break. My suspicion is he won't be putting up any record breaking numbers (but I'll be happy to eat my words).
I've also been worried about Pedro's stuff for the last few years. I feel like in the last 2 seasons he's lost his edge a bit--perhaps not completely, but he's no longer as lights-out as he used to be in my opinion. While he still has the ability of any superstar pitcher to pitch intelligently and work the count to get outs, I honestly think its a matter of time before he begins to self destruct, and if Pedro starts to self destruct, you know he's going to go down in flames. I love Pedro to death, but would not be shocked to see him start putting up monster numbers sometime around the middle of the season. He may still throw some great games, but I don't see it being the norm, and I'd expect him to get shaken up a lot more often. Without a solid bullpen to fall back on, that can be dangerous.
In any case, while the Mets definetly have the potential to make the playoffs this season, they also have the potential to have the wheels come off in a very ugly way.
