Just picked up a '05 Jetta GLS in January on a very good deal, but... it's been in the shop 3 times already.
First time: Tranny would slip out of gear, car would lurch as soon as you put it in reverse, check engine light comes on and off randomly, so I took it in. They said the factory had put the wrong type of oil in and that had screwed up the 'puter and so they reset everything and sent me on my way. Did the 5k checkup/oil change for free.
Second time: Check engine light again. Took it in, they replaced a sensor. They said they weren't sure if this would solve the problem, and that they would just replace parts until it got fixed. WTF? Also the drivers side window button broke, so they replaced it and works fine now.
Third time: This one was my fault, and as I was driving home from picking my car up from the shop (see #2 above, yes, THE SAME DAY), I ran something over on the freeway and it ruptured my fuel line. So I had to have the fire dept. come and sign off that it was okay to get it towed. Was without a car for a week, and it cost me $660 to get it fixed. Damn dealerships.
Now, my gas gauge never reads full. My co-worker had the same exact problem and they tore his car apart and still didn't fix it.
Also, while moving there's a whistling sound that seems to be coming from the drivers side mirror, which they say the can take apart, fill w/ foam and that should quiet it.
What's next? Fixing my tire w/ bubble-gum? Super gluing any molding that comes loose?
I'm seriously thinking about jetting this Jetta and getting something else.

I have a question: Is Audi plagued by the same reliability problems as VW?

Thanks. So why isn't Audi on that list?Originally posted by: Mani
Not quite as bad but close. Audi and VW have some serious work to do on the reliability of their cars - their QA must be nonexistent.Originally posted by: TuffGuy

Anyway, I hope that they get their problems worked out. I'm really like the new GTI/A3 with the 2.0T and DSG.

if they put a lancer above a civic, then the site is obviously not to be trusted.
lancer = garbage
Given the same car, the manual will be always be quicker (with the exception of DSG) and put down more power.Originally posted by: psteng19
Why do people feel the need to disclose the transmission type of their car?
And usually the people who do it are the ones that drive manual.
Thanks. They weren't on that list, so I thought that as bad as VW is, the Audi counterparts were not as bad as the BMW/Benz competition.Originally posted by: Mani
They are on JD Power's list and frequently rate as the worst of the luxury brands in terms of reliability. I hope they fix things too - there's a lot to like about the cars but I just wouldn't be able to pay that kind of money for a car that will be in the shop a significant portion of its life.Originally posted by: TuffGuy

That, and I'm proud that I'm not a pedal masher driving a slushbox.
j/k... My previous car was an sportronic, and it always made me regret not buying the manual. With all my mods it was only as fast as the stock manual, and it wasn't as much fun to drive as a manual.
