Just picked up a '05 Jetta GLS in January on a very good deal, but... it's been in the shop 3 times already.

First time: Tranny would slip out of gear, car would lurch as soon as you put it in reverse, check engine light comes on and off randomly, so I took it in. They said the factory had put the wrong type of oil in and that had screwed up the 'puter and so they reset everything and sent me on my way. Did the 5k checkup/oil change for free.

Second time: Check engine light again. Took it in, they replaced a sensor. They said they weren't sure if this would solve the problem, and that they would just replace parts until it got fixed. WTF? Also the drivers side window button broke, so they replaced it and works fine now.

Third time: This one was my fault, and as I was driving home from picking my car up from the shop (see #2 above, yes, THE SAME DAY), I ran something over on the freeway and it ruptured my fuel line. So I had to have the fire dept. come and sign off that it was okay to get it towed. Was without a car for a week, and it cost me $660 to get it fixed. Damn dealerships.

Now, my gas gauge never reads full. My co-worker had the same exact problem and they tore his car apart and still didn't fix it.

Also, while moving there's a whistling sound that seems to be coming from the drivers side mirror, which they say the can take apart, fill w/ foam and that should quiet it.

What's next? Fixing my tire w/ bubble-gum? Super gluing any molding that comes loose?

I'm seriously thinking about jetting this Jetta and getting something else.

2000VW Jetta owner righ here. Funny this post came up. I'm currently borrowing my sister's Accord while my Jetta's in the shop. Some battery draiin issue. Woohoo! 83K miles and been in the shop 4 times...2 for a mandatory recall.

I wouldn't trust a report that lists the Chevrolet Camaro as one of the top three sports cars.

Well same thing goes for a report that lists the Lancer in the top 5 ;)

Not quite as bad but close. Audi and VW have some serious work to do on the reliability of their cars - their QA must be nonexistent.

And you're an idiot.

They didn't "put" a Lancer above a Civic, that's just a list of the problems that each car has.

Thanks. So why isn't Audi on that list?

Anyway, I hope that they get their problems worked out. I'm really like the new GTI/A3 with the 2.0T and DSG.

The Ionic Breeze is complete and utter crap.

Did you guys just overlook the part where they said they received surveys from 810,000 new car owners? I guess all those people were just lying about their overpriced German cars...

I think you missed the class on humor.

The way this particular joke works is:

One person says "If we were to believe everything CR said, we would all think that Bose is the best speaker company in the world." Now this is funny because Bose sucks and that is pretty much agreed on.

Then you are supposed to follow up with a similar example. A suitable one would be "Or VHS offers better quality than DVD!"

But instead you posted that the Ionic Breeze is complete and utter crap.

This does not work since IT IS COMPELTE AND UTTER CRAP!

Why do people feel the need to disclose the transmission type of their car?
And usually the people who do it are the ones that drive manual.

I have a Mit. Lancer and I am very happy with it. Sorry, but Honda's and Toyota's are just overrated. I feel sorry for the lemmings who buy those products.

They are on JD Power's list and frequently rate as the worst of the luxury brands in terms of reliability. I hope they fix things too - there's a lot to like about the cars but I just wouldn't be able to pay that kind of money for a car that will be in the shop a significant portion of its life.

if they put a lancer above a civic, then the site is obviously not to be trusted.

lancer = garbage

You = Misinformed

The Lancer has been a solid car for Mitsubishi ever since it was released in Asia. It was a great decision for them to bring it to the states.

The Evo is a cult classic; bulletproof engine, solid transmission, great reliability, and unbeatable performance (for the price). Looks can turn some people off, but you can't really argue with the numbers.

Given the same car, the manual will be always be quicker (with the exception of DSG) and put down more power.

That, and I'm proud that I'm not a pedal masher driving a slushbox. :p

j/k... My previous car was an sportronic, and it always made me regret not buying the manual. With all my mods it was only as fast as the stock manual, and it wasn't as much fun to drive as a manual.

Thanks. They weren't on that list, so I thought that as bad as VW is, the Audi counterparts were not as bad as the BMW/Benz competition.

i really think they should break up their ranking of problems into minor and major. having the radio or something relatively unimportant break shouldn't be on the same level as having to having trannies go, etc.

The performance numbers are surprising as well.
I would not have guessed the Lancer to be heavier than the bloated Sentra.
Yet with more weight and a smaller engine, it out-accelerates the Sentra (but loses in the track).
