No one is forcing you to borrow money.

These people need a car to work, to give their children shelter, to provide food for their children. They need a car so their children can see a doctor. Do you expect these children to live in destitution.

I see it now, a parent is behind payments due a child with significant health problems. During a medical emergency they try to take the child to a hospital in a desperate attempt to save the child life. The car stalls, and greedy bank shuts off the ignition at this moment. The parent is unable start the stalled car again because the greedy bank has condemned her and her child. Lives are in danger people.

A woman who couldn't pay her bills due to cancer, is trying to drive to her medical treatment. Her old car she got a loan through the loan shark bank, stalls on the freeway. She is unable to restart because the bank has condemned her. She is now stuck in the middle of a busy freeway. She is hit by another car who doesn't see her. Another life lost.

All of these stories could have happen.

I need a car for all those reasons too. That's why I pay my bills.

And you're kinda missing the part where loan products like these help these people get a car in 1st place. And lenders make these risky loans with the hope and intention that the borrowers will be able to do all those things AND pay them back.

72% of Detroit residents pay their cell phone bills on time
66% of Detroit residents pay their cable bill on time.
Yet only 50% of Detroit resident pay their water bill.

The 50% that pay are the ones that bathe. ;)

A car is a necessity as important as shelter. A car loan should have the same protections as a mortgage and foreclosure.

All of these stories could have happen.

Lots of really dumb things can happen trying to do this with the unnecessary step of 'auto shut off' added to the mix.

The car still needs to be physically recovered, only because random stupidity is now involved that process will happen (same as always) from random,.stupid locations that are more dangerous for a repo person and more likely to strand the car somewhere where it'll cause a hazard, end up towed/impounded, vandalized, parted or just plain stolen.

But supposedly adding stupid random vairiables to the repo process is "helping people get a car in the first place". Yeah. Sure.

lol - a necessity? Are you fucking kidding me? At what point do you lefties stop with this whiny bitch stuff?

Great example of the left's entitlement mentality. America is raising a bunch of pussies who think they are owed everything. Disgusting. Cabs....Buses....Bikes, oh my. Yes, there are ways to get around and nobody, including myself is entitled to or owed anything.

I agree that this auto disable should have some leeway. In that NY times story quoted in the top post, it was used on 3 day late payment. There should be greater margin.

But she has a 2005 Chrysler van. I'm not sure whether financing a van is a necessity for a single mother. Why not a smaller, cheaper car? Better gas mileage too. Lots of relatively well off people drive smaller cars.

From the same news story

Even though the device made her squeamish, Michelle Fahy of Jacksonville, Fla., agreed to have one installed in her 2001 Dodge Ram because she needed the pickup truck for her job delivering pizza.

---------

Why do you need a pickup truck to deliver pizza? People do that in sedans all the time. Again, better gas mileage too

From the same story, 26 year old Oscar in San Antonio has a 2007 Dodge Magnum with a $362 monthly payment. Would it be below the dignity of Oscar to drive a smaller, cheaper car?

Something is wrong in America, and it is not just the greedy corporations.

This isn't Europe. When I lived in Oklahoma it was 20 miles to the nearest town. No cabs, no buses and would you bike 40 miles round trip to get a loaf of bread?

That would have been your choice to live that far away from town and since you could make it into town, you probably paid your bills, so you could do so. Quit making fucking excuses for people!

We need to place high priority in protecting access to the what are the real necessities. People should have a fundamental right to:

Internet at least 2Mbs
Electricity
Water
Good Food
Gas
Transportation (This often includes a vehicle)
Telephone
Shelter
Periodic Entertainment (the minds needs to enjoy, in order to thrive)

This car is basically part of transportation, and with it comes access to many of the other fundamental necessities.

No it isn't. When I first started working I had to walk three miles to work and three miles home daily. You may have to leave earlier and get home later.

You can work without a car. Maybe not delivering pizza, but you can work.

In fucking FL too. These are the types of morons that exist. I *NEED* a truck that gets shitty gas milage to deliver pizzas all over the place rather than getting a practical vehicle.

I'm not opposed to the practice, but some strong rules need to be put into place, including a reasonable grace period. Losing a car can mean losing a job, and these people are by definition on the precipice of a financial death spiral.
