Minorities strike again

The state of llinois, after being threatened with having I-64 shut down, has now agreed to provide a 5 year guarantee of funds and training to minorities to get them more of the contracts for state construction jobs.Why do we have to pay for and include any particular group when the state already has a low bid protocol in the first place? If you don;t have the training or the tools, go to school and the hardware store , then bid for the job like everyone else. Haven't we dropped the standards ,to be inclusive, enough already in this country? Is it now a right to be included whether or not you have the skills or the intelligence to do the job?

Why is it when all the filth crawl from under a rock on a subject like this, the implication is somehow the minority is either unskilled, unqualified, or undeserving?
 
Need to know facts before calling it.. Maybe major nepotism was happening.. like governers cousin's firm got all the work...Maybe the "minorities" just could'nt pay the "entry fee" to wine and dine those crooks called politicians for contracts.

If it was a situation such as you claim it may be, why then isn't that the cry.Prosecute the same as I would have to.You won't last long in politics once the media gets a story such as that.

If they had the skills and qualifications they would get the contract by being the low bidder like everyone else.Why do they have to shut down freeways and other such shenanigans force organizations to include them.There is a system nad it is regularly circumvented by the ACLU Reps...at least here in the midwest. They did this on the Missouri side a few years ago to a similar resolution for contracts on the public transportation only they actually laid on the freeway and closed it for a considerable period of time. Thanks Jesse Jackson, Reverand Al and all the other "leaders" involved.

Providing special treatment for minorities when their is already a process in place for awarding such contracts certainly does not help in fighting this perception.

Typical...this country is unable to engage in any healthy discussions about race relations because to criticize minorities is to be labeled a racist...many of the problems that minorities face in today's society are due largely to the problems that exist in their own communities, but we aren't allowed to talk about that.

The comments were racist. To discuss the problems openly can be a slippery slope, yes. Heres a great example (i read while in grad school at berkeley), Berkeley High, is the most integrated HS in the US. Yet, there is a horrible number of hispanics and blacks NOT going to college. Something like ~80% versus ~5% for whites/asians and hispanics/blacks combined, repspectively. The idea was that blacks/hispanics as a culture dont care about education. Do i agree with this? At some level, yes. Hence the need for afirmative action.

Who's excusing what? You do have a knack for accusing people of something that's not there.

How about this? Women weren't allowed to vote before the 19th amendment. So let's make it where *only* women can vote now. That'll make things "fair," right? White people used to own slaves before the Civil War. So let's make it where all white people *have* to be slaves now. That'll make things "fair," right? Homosexuals can't marry? Let's make it where *only* homosexuals can get married! That'll make things "fair," right?

Maybe you'll one day realize that yes, many attrocities and acts of extreme unfairness and prejudice have taken place in our nation's and world's histories. Some are still taking place today. The right answer is to identify these acts, admit that they are wrong, and *remove* them, as quickly and fairly as possible. That's how you make things better. That's how you make things fair.

You don't make things unfair in the opposite direction and hope the two injustices balance each other out, somehow. That's how kindergardeners resolve disputes. "Push me down and I'll push you back" is juvenille and futile once you realize that you can simply make a "No pushing" rule and go from there, punishing those who break the new rule. Grow up and join the rest of us adults who are trying to make the world a better place for everyone.

But the discussion on how to correct the problem went from striking at the source to treating the symptoms.

Affirmative action still does not address the cultural and community barriers that prevent minorities from pursuing higher education, and a significant number of those barriers have nothing to do with racism.

You cannot live in nor change the past...and attempting to make amends for past injusticies by introducing further inequities into the mix does nothing to resolve the problem of racism.

Affirmative action is simply another form of seperate but equal, but one that benefits minorities as opposed to oppressing them...affirmative action neither helps to create a color blind society nor does it provide equality.

not that i'm a huge supporter of affirmative action but the argument is by temporarily increasing the relative level of opportunity for a statistically more poor group of citizens (who in general got that way b/c of vast inequities of the past) that you'll give them a chance to become equal on the playing field (and I guess at this point affirmative action would go away but i'm not really sure how). affirmative actions goal is not to punish white males (although it may a little i never noticed seemed to have any problems). the major loser on affirmative action are the businesses involved in it. by automatically limiting your pool of potential candidates you aren't getting the best all around workers.
 
Well good luck getting AA overturned. Last I checked Bush, Repulicans and Democrats support Nixons plan, another Republican. None is stupid enough to oppose. They burnt Buchanan at the stake in 96 when he made comments about his wish to repeal... Heard some the pundits on MSM saying stuff like "his speech was better in the original German" with the obvious implications.. And of course every group called him a racist.

There are three things you don't fusk with in American politics: Old people, Children, Minorites.

Yet some of you object to any action to make ammends for what happened in the past. And that is the only way you will be able to deal with the future.

You people object when a few contracts go to non-white companies yet without efforts by government to set aside a portion of that work non-white companies would STILL not receive contracts.

That's what you call living in the future???

Sadly, Affirmative Action was never intended to be law, it was a strong suggestion. It was based on the concept that schools and businesses with government contracts were to recieve preferntial treatment if they impsoed hiring quotas on themselves. Today, we have people like Jesse Jackson extorting billions from companies with no ties to government under these same concepts. Funny thing is, legally they do not apply. However, he can threaten them, get what he wants (cash) and get typically unskilled people hired.

Look at the facts of Affirmative Action. It rarely benefits anyone on any side. Look at all of the black kids failing in the CA college system - are they now supposed to make classes easier for them, a curve based on color. Look at the free points that U of Mich. was rewarding simply for being of color - you would get 50% of your score for writing your name down. White students automatically started with deductions.

If you want to level the playing field, start at the bottom with education. We need to fix poor schools, move money where it is needed, and get rid of teachers unions. Furthermore school districts need to be run as businesses and schools need to account for performance. Children should be punished for skipping class, and failure should be punished with Summer school and when necessary repeating a grade UNTIL YOU GET IT.

All too often kids are slipping by because the 'we don't want to hurt their feelings' crowd is getting in the way. Time to get tough. We are raising a bunch or idiots that have little hope outside of the prison system.

Oh yeah, it is also time to tell parents and children that basketball and football are good past times, but they are not the 'ticket' out of the hood. Education is.
