So, just like people wrongly calling kids born in 2002 and in high school now Millennials? It seems we don't really assign a name to a generation until about half of them are adults, until then those that are adults many times get called the same as the generation before.

Born in '82.
Honestly all the labeling only serves to categorize people in ways which serves self-interest, so I think the whole notion is a farce anyhow. But that's just me.

Use the labeling to your advantage like I did. Corporate types as always are looking into fancy words for normal stuff. Being born in '83 means that you officially fit into the "cusper" age range and would be a "valuable" member of the team who understands both Gen X and Millennials that can help integrate younger Millennals into the company and vice versa. Doesn't matter if it is BS as long as the guys in charge think you are special.

I always fought the Millennial label until I was at a seminar with several high level people in the company and part of that was identifying the cuspers in the room as the future leaders of their companies. From that day on I have embraced the label and it has worked wonders for me in my career.

Maybe it's different for your career field, but I've always gotten a lot more success off my capabilities in my role than interaction between individuals. I work in IT though so most of my interactions are with computer systems, heh. It's a good day when I don't actually have to talk until I go home.

Yeah maybe. I'm in construction where there is a massive shortage of younger people in the field.

I can see that, team reliance and getting 'young blood' in the mix might warrant closer interactions between age groupings. For IT, half the time they're trying to push old farts (40+ out) into either other fields or on the street, the other half they're trying to outsource your job to someone from India, so bilingual carries more weight than bi... age? or whatever you'd call a 'cusper'.

the range is far too broad

ill be 37 this year and i have nothing in common with those even 7 years younger that myself. 21 year olds might as well be a alien race to me at this point

I was always accused of being the grumpy old man of the group back when I was ~17. I'm 39 now, and I find many 37 year-olds that I simply don't relate to. :(

I've done some interviews which weren't far off:

Candidate 1: I'm an expert in R!
Me: Okay, explain linear regression
Candidate 1: ...
Me: Okay, how do you make a list in R?
Candidate 1:...

Candidate 2: I'd rate myself as advanced in Python development
Me: Explain the differences in dictionaries, lists, and tuples in Python
Candidate 2: What's a tuple?

Candidate 3: I'm familiar with every tool in ArcGIS (very commonly used mapping software)
Me: Explain what the "Intersect" tool does
Candidate 3: I've never heard of that one

I've interviewed one Boomer who somehow did worse in that he just kept lying even when it was obvious to everyone that we knew he was lying.

I work with lots of young people. They work long hours in difficult situations and I wouldn't say that they, as a group, are any worse than any other group.
They do have the wonderful position of house prices being way too expensive for any of them to afford and rents taking up the majority of their wages though!

Whenever an interviewer asks me to rate my ability, I bring up the dunning Kruger effect because we're notoriously bad at rating ourselves. If we're not truly competent, we know just enough to think we're capable at it but not enough to know how deep the subject goes.

I follow up with objective things I've done like x amount of years working with that language, or that i actively consider most efficient algorithm to minimize the big O complexity.

We didn't ask these folks, they just put it on their resumes. I prefer a more conversational style of interview, but if you're going to claim strong expertise in skills we really need, expect plenty of questions. :p

I'm not a software engineer, I just code to get things done, so I don't ask about stuff like algorithm complexity. I assume folks can look up the best algorithms for themselves rather than having them memorized.

What blue pill Viagra?
LOL.

What difference does it make who made the video? I don't care who made it, it was funny with a ring of truth to it.

Millenial women are exactly like that. Vapid and impatient. Lots of them are psychopathic at work. As they get older, some figure things out and learn to behave like normal adults. The Millenial males usually impress me with their work ethic, but cant show up on time on a consistent basis.

Twenty five years ago, they would have been fired. The lot of them. Cant stop playing with your phone while you work? Cant show up on time?

YOU'RE FIRED!

There's no data that supports what Simon says. He's basing his whole talk off of the bullshit narratives in the media.

Bingo. Dealing with a nineteen year old right now. Glad I'm retired and don't have to deal with this at work.

And the older generations have been complaining about the younger ones ever since the written language was invented. The fact is, younger people are inherently less developed in their maturity and work ethic. It's easy for older folks to forget how they were when they were young but instead put the younger generation to the same standard as members of their own age groups. It's not a generational thing. It's an age thing.

blah blah blah

How could an entire generation not know what time to show up for work and the importance of doing so? I have seen many people under 30 exhibiting the same behavior. Regardless of what you want to argue, these facts speak for themselves.

I don't know any of those tools, but I do know how to use Google. Give me 30 minutes, and I'll come up with answers to your oddly specific technical questions.

Of course, I'm not a millennial... I just apparently problem solve like one :)

At least I show up to work on time, though!

...so flagging "inappropriate youtube videos" is the mature type of work that only the useful, non-vapid adults are qualified for? That must require some type of super high work ethic!

ha born in 81

but i still thing the age gap is wrong. people didn't start talking about "millennials" until people started entering the workforce in the 2008-10 time-frame which 4-6 years after i graduated from college. my brother was born in '84 and i don't even thing he qualifies as one. honestly i wouldn't start the grouping till 86-88

That would be about the time frame of the first millennials who graduated high school in 2000.

So you manage a Walmart or something?
