I shut him the fuck up. I asked him if he suggested that Tims, Timmys, or Timothys change their names after the Oklahoma City bombings, and he was speechless. I told him names didn't mean anything, my would be killer-cousin Osama doesn't kill anything save for the zombies in his favorite video game. They cut to commercials and moved on to the next topic after my call. I've got it on tape somewhere.

Interesting... what about kids named Muhammad Jihad?

What about kids named Timmy Timothy?

I agree with you to a point... no one should have to or be asked to change their given name to "keep the peace"... but I can't agree with your comparison to Timmy etc.

In no language is Timmy defined as a holy war against infidels, where as Jihad is. America is a country where the majority of its citizens could/would be considered infidels depending on someone's interpretation of the Quran.

I don't think comparing a name like Timmy to one that can be associated with a religion which has followers that believe you and your kin deserve to be murdered is a step in the right direction.

Again, I don't think anyone should change their name and assumptions about someone based simply on their name should be labeled as ignorant at best, but comparing 1 person's name to the word Jihad doesn't seem right to me. That is comparing 1 event with ~150 deaths in 1 day (as a result of an act of 1 person) to a religious movement that has spanned centuries and has resulted in the deaths of millions.

If you were to ask your average European what they know about the Oklahoma City bombing they probably wouldn't know anything... ask them what they think of when they hear the word Jihad and I'm pretty sure they would have a response.

Apply for a middle name change to "dirka dirka".

DISCLAIMER: I'm not trying to rip you apart or anything, the Timmy Timothy response was sarcasm.

I'm a Muslim and I speak very fluent Arabic. "Jihad" means struggle, derived from the root word "juhd" which means effort. People have distorted what the word means over time, jihad as referred to in the Quran originally meant fighting for your land and for your religion, not to force it upon others.

"Jihad" is not a religion. Every religion has followers that believe you and your kin deserve to be murdered.
The Evangelist preachers on campus are always yelling and screaming about how we're all sinners, we're all going to hell, and we all deserve to die for being impure and unguided.

The Crusades cost people their lives several centuries ago too, you don't see me holding it against Christianity...

Islamofacism, Islamic-extremism, Jihadist-extremism, etc. are a bunch of propagandist buzz words coined up by the government and the media. Just decades ago, the US favored said Muslims, they funded them (mujahideen; they were defending their land, hence the name) in Afghanistan to defeat the Soviets, they put them in power in Iran, and they were buddy buddy with them in Iraq. It's interesting how America's "enemies" are always those who are the easiest scapegoats that can be used to advance its agenda. Japanese-Americans were America's #1 public enemy when they rounded them up and put them in camps during WWII, Commies were the biggest threat to our Democratic existence during the Red Scare, and the list goes on. In 20 years America will probably target Pastafarians as the biggest threat to democracy; it's all a load of shit to advance its interests, not protect its ideals or existence.

Yes Jihad is not a religion and there are also radicals from other religions, but you said it yourself... it is being used as a buzzword. The average citizen in most countries, including here in America, is a sheep and will believe what they hear. The fact still remains that many Americans will interpret Jihad much different than any other foreign nation would interpret Timmy.

The problem is ignorance, along with what is depicted by most American media outlets.. but it still exists and is what the average person is following.

You make sound points, but again I have to disagree with the comparison between the Crusades and what westerners interpret as Jihad.

The Crusades undoubtedly cost Islamic lives, but I've never seen it interpreted as a mission to kill everyone that wasn't Christian. I know that the vast majority of Muslims are not on a mission to kill anyone Christian, never mind all of them, but the word Jihad is used by many extremists as an explanation/validation for their actions.

Honestly I think comparing Jihad to Timmy is almost as valid as comparing the name Crusade to Muhammad when the person named Crusade was European/white and lived in a predominantly Muslim country. I believe most would define the word crusade to be any movement working towards the advancement or defense of a location/ideal.

On a side note, I can't believe a thread about Miley Cyrus pics has gotten me to post more than a sentence containing ~5 words

You make sound points too. This is the first time I've agreed this much with someone on AT in a P/N style post.

Again, the Timmy Timothy post was complete sarcasm, as well as my mentioning it on the radio show. Point is, it caught him by surprise and he didn't know how to answer me.

I know Timmy is not an actual movement, but I do think it's funny that your definition of "crusade" is actually the exact definition of the original, intended meaning of "jihad" as used religiously; not beheadings and suicide bombings as it's come to be known today.

Wasn't this thread about Hanna Montana ?

Granted, I'm not a 12 year old girl or have a daughter but she just seems like any other teenage girl, is Disney's marketing really that powerful?

The American entertainment/music industry is desperatley looking for the next Britney Spears and if they can't find it they think it can be created even if it's a plastic pop star.

Of course it's all about the money.

I wasn't working with "my" definition.. but rather the the definition I would assume the average American believes. Emphasis on assume, but I would probably put money on it.

I understand your sarcasm and it is appreciated. I wish posts in P&N could be this rational and coherent so I wouldn't have to ignore all the posts there. Either way I'm done for the night and must say I've enjoyed the discussion so far but am not sure I will have time to rejoin it as the week progresses.

It's not a huge NSFW pic but I like knowing I'm clicking on a pic vs a news article.
