Many people get them as a tribute to an important event in their life that will always mean something. For the morons who just get them b/c they're young and dumb, that is something I'd lol at. But for people who do it to preserve a memory, I can see why they'd do that. Kind of like a wife of a guy who died in 9/11 and got his NYFD hat tatted on her. I am not going to judge someone who does such a thing.

Placement is another thing. In corporate culture, you're not going to get one on your face, hands, because that is always deemed unprofessional. However, you'd be surprised how many tats are looming under those dress shirts.

😕 Well, how the hell would I know what someone's tattoo means to them?

Honestly, I just think they're all dumb.

Wonder how much this will change over the next decade or so, as more and more people get tattoos and work their way into management combined with the old management retiring.

Probably not a whole lot. Remember when earrings on guys were all the rage? I don't see any on our corporate campus today.

There's definitely a lot of really idiotic looking tattoos you can get on visible areas that advertise you to be an idiot, but they don't necessarily mean you can't do the job effectively.

I would never hire someone that interviewed with a visible tatoo. If nothing else, it demonstrates incredibly poor judgement.

You might be able to perform the functions of the job in cowboy boots, Daisy Dukes, and a workout bra, but your inability to discern what is appropriate is a non-starter.

In Washington, Ken Saler, a 61-year-old, semi-retired real estate maverick has reinvented himself. His Advanced Laser Tattoo Removal office sits above a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store on Connecticut Avenue NW and has a steady stream of customers

i thought you had to be a MD to do this.

Have you checked the economy lately? I bet you could find 100 very well qualified Unix admins, tats or not.

Did you interview him? Were his tats showing when he was hired?

Welcome to life pal. In the real world people generally look at someone with tattoos and start to question your judgement. I guess if your career goals are working on engines or welding or driving a fork lift then tat it up.

lol lol lol wtf is wrong with you? are you a religious freak or something? the only people i hear talk like you about tattoos are intolerant jesus freaks.

I have nothing against tattoos, but the article is precisely why I've never gotten one. I can't think of anything that I'd truly want on me for the rest of my life.

Though I've often thought a caffeine molecule (C8H10N4O2) would be pretty cool. 😀

No but clearly you are one of those career oriented professional types that the Occupy crowd keeps warning us about. You are the physical manifestation of the boot thats keeping the working man down!

Nope, I have no problem with the occupy crowd. I hate that corporations have so much control over our government and that some (mainly the religious right) seem to think that there is nothing wrong with this.

I just happen to think that tattoos are stupid. 😛

Wait, so you are saying you hate corporations, the very backbone of America?! AND you hate the religious right for supporting corporations?!?!

So you are just one of those socialist guys who wants a free ride from the system!! I see what kind of person you are!

😛

Trendy tattoos are always a bad idea. If you want a Caffeine molecule just go to thinkgeek and buy one of the bazillion trendy crapware items they have with it plastered on.

Get a tshirt or mug, not a tattoo. 😛

Exactly. Think back to your younger self. Think of all those dumb decisions you made and things you said. You might be thinking, "how could I be so stupid?"

Now imagine having a permanent, visual reminder of how stupid you were imprinted on you forever.

Tattoos are never worth it.

I don't know, in some cultures it's acceptable and many do it. The only tattoo I have is a USMC one. /shrug. You can't see it however in normal attire. So I won't say a tattoo is never worth it, but it seems many get them for the wrong reason. Trendy being one of them.

Yeah, I suppose that is different. I can recognize why some people would want a tattoo to commemorate a major life event. A friend of mine took a 40-day canoe trip in the Arctic circle and all the members of her party got a little polar bear tattoo.

What I really don't get is random meaningless symbols. Yeah, trendy stuff like you said. Why bother with a tattoo if it doesn't have some sort of special meaning to you? Why get a butterfly tramp stamp when millions of other people your age also have butterfly tramp stamps?

Hey, minimus, I think morons who risk their lives on motorcycles are dumb.
And if tattoos are so bad in the work force, why is your boss doing better then you? He has tattoos.

LOL

It's not a black and white world like you like to paint it jule. Not all motorcyclists are dumb and not all tattoos are bad.

What makes you think my Boss is doing better than me? I own my own home, he doesn't, I have a wonderful wife and 9 year old son, he doesn't. He doesn't show them here at work, I do know that. Only reason I know he has them is that he rolled up his sleeves one day and I could see part of one of them. You're right though, not everything is black and white. 😛

Why would I assume that your ink has some special meaning to you? Given the amount of thought most people put into them and the number of people who have regrets later on and go through the expense and pain of having them removed tells me that not much thought did go into many of them.

thats one dumb blanket statement to make.

Well if you read my later post I said that sometimes they are, usually for major life events or for things that have a special meaning to you. It's still true that a lot of people get dumb trendy tattoos for no reason, and I'm not surprised that a ton of them are undergoing painful and expensive removal procedures because they were stupid and drunk one night.
