lol, just a small number of the games i want to play are available on linux

linux is great for servers, i use it all the time, but The Year Of The Linux Desktop is still years away

Linux has a chance of dominating the desktop space pretty quickly if you count Chrome OS.
Not that I use it since I use other distros of Linux like Xubuntu/Ubuntu and Mint, and use Windows even more than that for a lot of "power user" stuff that works better on desktop than cloud, but I could see it taking most of the casual consumer market.

If you look at Android, Linux is already on a significant amount of devices worldwide. It's just not quite as pure a Linux distribution as most Linux users/advocates would like, unfortunately.

The Linux kernel dominates computing. The only place it doesn't lead, or isn't competitive is the desktop.

It's just a name. Lets see how well it performs before we pass judgement. I know this is crazy talk on the internets but maybe this time it will be different.

I heard a rumor that some old code bases do checks for windows 9* to run legacy windows 95 & 98 code which if they used Windows 9 as the name would flip that switch. Could just be a rumor though.

Hopefully no one writes and reads it as "X", because then you run into the "Deus Ex" problem. "Do you like Window sex?" "Window what!?!"

Or they might get sued by Apple because they have OS X. Windows X can basically translate to OS X because Windows is an operating system. Sounds silly, but I don't make the rules, IP laws are ridiculous. :p

So Microsoft is skipping 9 to go straight to 10 (not sure why they're not going to 11 though). Oh no! Rabble rabble version numbers rabble rabble!

They'll have to pull a Firefox and get aggressive in going up version numbers too if they want to catch Apple. Windows 10 Liger. Windows 10 LOLcat. Then they'd need to jump to geography. Windows 10 San Diego (codename Whale's Vagina). Windows 10 Seattle (Seahawks > 49ers). Or maybe Windows 10 SuperSonics (codename Fuck the Thunder).

Shame they're going with 10. Don't they realize X is far more extreme! Probably worried people will get confused. So is it the 10box One?

+1 For anchorman reference!

Dominates with decades old code with little too no oversight apparently.

Why do you say that? Because of a couple recent bugs? All non-trivial software has bugs, and with libre software, they can be found by anyone, and fixed. Don't fall for the fud distributed by people who want to control you. Proprietary software is inherently untrustworthy, as any black box is.

gonna be twice the price as previous versions of windows watch

calling it now

what did windows 8 sell for? windows 10 gonna be atleast $50 more

I bought Win8 upgrade for $40. Most sources are saying that Windows 10 will be free for Win8 users. The rumors are whether or not it will be free to Win7 users.

Something tells me that they had an internal version that was supposed to be Windows 9 that got scrapped while Ballmer was on his way out.

The Windows team has been on a rapid release structure basically since Sinofsky left (president of Windows division) a couple weeks after Win8 was released in an effort to fix the issues with Win8. Windows 8.1 came out last summer which made Win8 more friendly for desktop users and this spring Window 8.1 Update 1 came out which had even more good changes in it. There was going to be a Windows 8.1 Update 2 this summer but basically they thought it was going to make Windows 9 too small of an upgrade (Update 2 was going to bring back the start menu) or it just wasn't ready so they removed the start menu upgrade and made it the "Windows 8.1 August Update."

Windows 10 is basically Windows 8.2. Internally they had a date on which the next "version" of Windows was going to ship but they worked on shipping updates to Windows 8 in the mean time. Windows 10 is basically the work they've done since Win 8.1 Update 1 in a more polished form. Windows Phone has been updating the same way for a few years now and they are basically the ones running the Windows division now like Joe Belfiore.

We can basically expect OSX like updates for Windows from here on out. In that way, it is understandable for them to want to remarket the Windows brand.

That could have been catastrophic.

I said that because it's true. I'm not falling for anything just calling it how I see it. It doesn't matter anyway. This is a thread about Windows and how 7 ate 9. har har....
