This means that software written for the GNU environment will be able to compile and run on Vista with little or no modifications. You are lucky. I am referring to Vista Enterprise on an Active Directory with roughly 2,500 users. It sucks ass. We rolled it out in a small test room and re-imaged all the machines back to XP Pro SP2 within two weeks.

The problem was: Each user has a 4GB network drive, Z:, with the users ID as the drive name. Vista Enterprise creates a Document folder with that same ID name. Average users start saving all their documents locally, instead of on the network drive. We had to look up what computers they logged into and get them to retrieve their files. Over and over. The same users!

Vista sucks.

I've been using it now for almost a year on my desktop, server and laptop with no issues.

I think it was about 3 months and two reformats due to "OS not found" errors before I went back to XP. And the thing is, there is very little I miss about Vista. The file transfer window is more detailed.... that's pretty much all I miss.

I don't understand the hate for Vista either. I have it on 3 machines and have had zero problems. My pc has been rebooted once in the last 2 months and it wasn't OS related, with no slow down.

Thats what I was wondering as well. I use cygwin and mingw for my gnu needs which work fine with XP.

I don't get it either. I am using it now on both my primary machines at home and it works as well as XP did. I have also installed it on quite a few different older machines and the only real problem I have run into is not being able to find drivers in some cases.
 
vista is very touchy, and if anything happens along the way of usage, it can create major headaches. HOWEVER, with that being said, a properly maintained system - with working drivers and no file-system issues - will be able to run Vista flawlessly. And Vista, once it reaches mass adoption and Microsoft includes some of the things they originally planned... and more developers grow comfortable with the abilities.... it will be great.
I've never had a problem in Vista that I hadn't had in XP. I've had enough issues with XP that I grew bored with it. Modern and future hardware is going to benefit more with Vista compared to XP... Vista is much more future-proof it seems in its capabilities.

Now.. file transfers? They need to fix that stat. agonizingly slow.

To properly run vista, install linux, then run vista as a virtual os.
